Use a timeline when you need dates and sequencing, then choose reports that answer a specific progress question. The right setup depends on whether your space is for business or software work and whether it is team-managed or company-managed.
Choose the right Jira space and setup
Jira Cloud’s current documentation calls the organizing container a “space”; some screens or older materials may still use “project.” Atlassian defines a space as “a collection of related work items that helps your team organize, track, and manage work.” A space can represent a product, project, team, or service. Match the space to the work
- Business space: A practical starting point for general project management and nontechnical work.
- Software space: Intended for software delivery. Templates include Scrum, Kanban, and bug tracking; choose based on how the team plans and moves work.
Spaces can also be team-managed or company-managed. Team-managed spaces give a team more local control over setup; company-managed spaces are administered with shared governance. That choice affects configuration and available views, so check the actual space type before following instructions for a particular screen. See Atlassian’s space overview.

Break the project into work items small enough that someone can own them and move them through a workflow. A useful item states the outcome or task clearly, rather than acting as a vague bucket such as “Planning.” Atlassian’s business-project guidance describes a simple workflow of To do → In Progress → Done; a software space may use different statuses or board configuration. Add only the fields that help the team act
- Owner: Assign a person when responsibility is clear. Unowned work is harder to follow up on.
- Priority: Use it to distinguish urgency, not as a substitute for deciding what should be done next.
- Start and due dates: Add them when timing matters, particularly for milestone or schedule views. A date is a planning signal, not proof that the work will finish on time.
- Subtasks: Use them when a larger item needs trackable steps. Avoid making every small action a separate top-level item if that obscures the project.
- Labels and attachments: Add labels to group or filter related work, and attach relevant context where the team needs it.
These fields are useful selectively; not every item needs every field. Keep descriptions and ownership current so the board reflects the work that is actually happening.
Use a board to monitor day-to-day progress
A board is the operational view of work moving through statuses. Cards represent work items, while columns show the workflow stages configured for that board. Scan the board to see what is waiting, what is active, and what has been completed; move an item when its real status changes. Atlassian describes software boards as a way to visualize and manage work through its workflow. Atlassian Support: What is a board in software spaces?

Make the board reflect the process
- Use a small set of meaningful statuses so the team can update work consistently.
- Review the queue and priorities regularly rather than treating every card as equally urgent.
- Check the board’s filter and scope if expected work is missing. A board can show only the work included by its configuration.
Business and software spaces do not necessarily expose identical board behavior or labels. If a menu or view differs, first confirm the space type and management model rather than assuming the feature is absent.
Use a timeline for dates and dependencies
A timeline helps with longer-range scheduling: place work against dates, see how items relate, and link dependencies where the space supports them. It complements the board rather than replacing it—the board is more useful for current workflow, while the timeline emphasizes timing and sequence. Atlassian’s timeline instructions are scoped to the relevant business or software space type. Atlassian Support: Manage and visualize your software space on the timeline

Pick reports by the question you need answered
Reports are most useful when you start with a question, not when you open them simply to produce a status update. The available reports depend on the space and its configuration. Atlassian’s report guide describes options for examining sprint progress, scope, workflow, epics, and releases. Atlassian Support: Track and analyze your team’s work with reports

- Hegemony is an asymmetric politico-economic card-driven board game for 2-4 players that puts you in the role of one of the socio-economic groups in a fictional state: The Working Class, the Middle Class, the Capitalist Class and the State itself.
- WILL YOU BE THE ONE TO LEAD YOUR CLASS TO VICTORY? Players have their own separate goals, they are all limited by a series of policies that affect most of their actions.
- INTRIGUE: You will decide how Hegemony plays out. Will you build alliances and negotiate to lead your class to victory, or will you resort to Machiavellian maneuvers to seal the fate of your enemies?
- MECHANICS: Hegemony is an asymmetric card-driven politico-economic game that makes use of mechanics like Resource Management, Hand Management, Voting and Variable Player Powers.
| Question | Report to consider | What it helps you inspect |
|---|---|---|
| How is the current sprint progressing? | Sprint or burndown report | Work completed and remaining during the sprint. |
| Has the amount of planned work changed? | Burnup report | Completed work in relation to changes in total scope. |
| How is work flowing through the process? | Control chart or cumulative flow diagram | Cycle-time patterns or the distribution of work across statuses. |
| What is happening with a larger body of work? | Epic report | Progress on work grouped under an epic. |
| What is the outlook for a release? | Version report | Work associated with a version or release. |
Velocity can help a Scrum team estimate how much work to plan in future sprints, but it is based on configured work and historical delivery; it is not a guarantee of future completion. Reports surface signals for discussion and adjustment rather than ensuring a project will meet a date.
Keep tracking useful as the project changes
- Update status when work changes state. A board is only a useful view when people keep the underlying items current.
- Revisit ownership, priority, and dates. Change them when responsibility or timing changes instead of letting stale values imply certainty.
- Use filters and labels to focus views. Agree on conventions so teammates can find the right subset of work.
- Check what the board includes. If a stakeholder expects to see an item that is missing, inspect the board filter and its scope.
- Review the right report at the right cadence. Use sprint reports during sprint reviews, flow reports to examine work movement, and release reporting when release outlook is the question.
Jira’s configuration and available views vary by space type, management model, permissions, and enabled features. Atlassian’s documentation on managing Jira Cloud spaces covers the broader configuration areas, including boards, reports, planning, and timelines: Manage Jira Cloud spaces.
