Jira Cloud Default Values vs. Placeholder Text: Which Should You Use?

A Jira Cloud default is saved field content if left unchanged; placeholder-style text is an instruction. Learn when to use each and how to configure a context default.

Use a Jira Cloud default value when you want starter text to become actual field content on a new work item. Use placeholder-style guidance when you want an instruction or example that users can type over without saving it as data. Jira Cloud supports context-based defaults for open-text custom fields; Atlassian said in an August 2024 update that custom placeholders for free-text fields would not be implemented in the immediate future, so check current support before relying on that status.

Default values and placeholder text do different jobs

Question Default value Placeholder-style guidance
What does it do? Prefills a field with content when a work item is created. Shows an example or instruction intended not to become field data.
What happens if the user leaves it alone? The value remains in the field and is saved as issue content. The intended behavior is for the prompt not to be saved merely because the user did not type.
What must the user do to enter their own text? They may need to edit or remove the starter content. They can start typing over the prompt.
Jira Cloud support evidenced by Atlassian Context defaults are supported for open-text custom fields. Atlassian’s August 2024 feature-request update said custom free-text placeholders would not be implemented in the immediate future.
Best fit Reusable starter content that users are expected to retain or edit. Hints, examples, or instructions that should not be stored as field content.

A common source of confusion is calling a prompt a “default value.” A default is data supplied in advance; placeholder text is guidance displayed in the input. The distinction matters when users create work items: an untouched default can appear later as if the user deliberately entered it.

When a Jira Cloud default is the right choice

Choose a default when new work items should start with meaningful content—for example, a standard statement that users are expected to keep, complete, or revise. Atlassian says a context default is automatically populated at work-item creation and appears only where that field context applies. See Atlassian’s Jira Cloud custom-field configuration guide.

  • Use it for actual starter content, not instructions that should disappear.
  • Make the text clearly editable so users understand they can change it.
  • Check the field context before assuming the default applies to every project or work type.

How to configure a custom-field default in Jira Cloud

  1. Open Jira administration and go to Work items, then Fields.
  2. Find the custom field, open its More actions menu, and select Contexts and default value.
  3. Edit the context that applies to the relevant project and work type.
  4. Choose Edit Default Value and set the starter content for that context.
  5. Check work-item creation in the target project and work type to confirm the field and default appear where expected.

Atlassian documents this default setting for fields with a text box where users type. Contexts can scope a field to particular projects or work types, so review the applicable context rather than assuming the value is global. Jira Cloud’s administration screens can change; if labels differ, use the current field-context page.

What to use when users need an instruction

Start with the field description or instruction text available for the field and confirm how it appears on the actual create or edit screen. Atlassian Community guidance points to the field instruction or description below the field for explanatory copy; placement and availability can depend on the screen and field type. See the Atlassian Community question about a default that disappears when typing.

If the requirement is specifically gray text inside the input that clears as soon as someone types, the reviewed Atlassian Cloud sources do not establish that as native Jira Cloud functionality. Check Jira Cloud’s current capabilities and, if necessary, evaluate compatible Marketplace apps. No particular app’s compatibility or feature set is established here; test the exact create and edit experience before rolling it out.

Jira Cloud placeholder status: what Atlassian said

Atlassian feature request JRACLOUD-41418 asks for administrator-configurable placeholder text in free-text issue fields, including Summary, Description, and custom free-text fields. In an August 2024 update, Angela Hawkins, Product Manager for Jira Cloud, wrote: “After a thorough review by the team, we have decided that we will not be able to implement Custom Placeholder Text in Free-Text Fields in the immediate future.” Read the Jira Cloud feature request for the update and its description of the desired behavior.

That is a dated statement, not a guarantee of Jira Cloud’s current roadmap or present-day capabilities. Verify the current feature status before making a configuration decision. Atlassian’s request describes placeholder text as project-specific, non-intrusive guidance that users can type over without first deleting default content.

Do not mistake Data Center guidance for a Cloud setup

Atlassian has a separate article about default content in the Description field that is explicitly labeled Data Center Only. It discusses pre-entered content and older on-premises modification approaches, and distinguishes a placeholder as gray text replaced when someone types. Those procedures do not establish a supported Jira Cloud method. See Atlassian’s Data Center-only Description-field article for its stated scope.

API and field-type considerations

For automation or app development, Jira Cloud’s REST API includes operations to retrieve and update custom-field context default values. Relevant context operations require Jira administrative permissions. Consult the Jira Cloud REST API reference for issue custom-field contexts and verify the current endpoint, scopes, permissions, and payload for your app. Managing a default through the API still creates a default; it does not provide placeholder behavior.

Field type is a separate decision. Atlassian’s issue-field developer guide describes text as a string supporting fuzzy JQL matches and rich_text as multiline text that also supports fuzzy search. The guide notes that migrating an existing field from text to rich_text does not migrate its data. Choosing between a default and a prompt does not, by itself, require changing the field type.

A practical decision rule

  • Use a context default if the initial text should be saved when a user leaves it unchanged.
  • Use field-description guidance if the text should explain what to enter without becoming the field value.
  • Investigate current Cloud support or compatible apps if a disappearing, type-over prompt is a firm requirement; test it in the actual project before adoption.
