The setup takes a few minutes, but the result depends on three things that trip up many teams: your Asana plan, the fields you need, and who can see the synced information.
Set up the Jira Cloud app in your Asana project
Asana’s official setup guidance for the Jira Cloud app follows the sequence below. Start in the Asana project where the new tasks should appear, not in your personal workspace.

- Open the Asana project that should receive the tasks.
- Choose Customize → Apps → Add App, select Jira Cloud, and add it to the project.
- Authorize the Jira account. The integration uses OAuth, so you sign in to Jira rather than pasting an API token.
- In the Jira Cloud app’s Data sync settings, select the Jira project and the issue type to sync.
- Choose When a Jira issue is added → Create a new Asana task and save the configuration.
Once saved, newly created Jira issues of the chosen type should appear as Asana tasks in that project. If you chose the wrong project or issue type, correct it in the same Data sync settings rather than adding a second app instance, which can lead to duplicate tasks.
Who can set it up
Asana’s guidance states three requirements for the person doing the configuration:

- They must have a Jira Cloud account.
- They must have edit access to the Jira project being synced.
- They cannot be a guest in Asana. Guests cannot configure this project setup.
If a colleague who meets these requirements sets up the integration, the sync continues running after they leave the project, but anyone who needs to change the field mapping or sync direction later will need the same access.
Which Asana plans include the integration
Asana’s Help Center lists the Jira Cloud integration across several plan names, including legacy ones. Plan labels differ between pages, so confirm your organization’s plan before relying on a tier-specific feature. The table reflects what Asana’s help and product pages state.

The one-way Jira-to-Asana task creation described in this guide is the feature that the Premium (legacy) tier’s limited functionality is described as covering. Teams on a legacy Premium plan should confirm the exact capabilities in their own account before building a workflow around them.

Understand what syncs and what does not
The integration does not copy every Jira field. Asana documents a fixed set of mappings and a list of unsupported fields, so the scope of the sync is set by these lists rather than by what appears on the Jira issue screen.
Supported core mappings
- Asana task name ↔ Jira Summary
- Description
- Status
- Priority
- Assignee
- Due date
Supported custom fields
Asana supports several custom-field types, including Date, People, Number, Single-select, and Multi-select on the Asana side, matched to selected Jira custom-field types. Which Jira types pair with which Asana types is set out in Asana’s field list, so check that list against the exact fields on your Jira issue type before promising a mapping to stakeholders.

- Components
- Versions
- Labels
- Epic Link and Epic Name
- Sprint from Jira Software boards
- Story Points or other estimation fields
- Time Tracking
- Rank or Order
- Linked Issues
- Watchers and Voters
- Custom fields from Marketplace apps
- Timestamp and Dependent drop-down custom-field types, which are unsupported in either direction
Asana’s guidance also describes some fields, such as URL and sprint, as syncing only from Jira to Asana. The sprint entry appears in both lists, so treat sprint data as unreliable until you have tested it on your own Jira project. Teams that depend on Labels or Components for routing should plan a workaround, such as a custom field or a Jira filter, before going live.

How user fields are matched
Assignee and other people fields match by email address. A Jira user and an Asana user must share the same email for the link to work. If no matching account exists, the value can be dropped and the Asana assignee may be left blank. Asana also notes that Jira email visibility settings may need adjusting before user mapping works for everyone on the team.

Import existing Jira issues
The integration can also bring existing Jira issues into Asana, not only new ones. In the Jira Cloud app’s Data sync settings, select the Jira project and issue type, enable the option to import existing issues, and save. Existing issues then arrive as Asana tasks through the same mapping rules. Run the import on a test project first if the issue type has many open items, because the resulting task count is only visible after the import completes.
Two-way sync and comments
Turning on Jira-to-Asana task creation does not make changes in Asana flow back to Jira. Updates in the Asana direction are a separate choice. Configure the update direction you need in the same Data sync settings, and confirm that it is included in your plan, since two-way data sync is listed only for the tiers shown in the table above.

Comments can also be configured to sync. Check comment direction and visibility during testing, because comments can carry information that the team did not intend to share across both tools.

Jira data that syncs into Asana becomes part of Asana’s work graph. Anyone who can see the Asana task or project can see the synced information, subject to Asana’s standard visibility and edit settings. Actions that write back to Jira are governed by Jira permissions, so a person who can edit an Asana task may still be unable to change the matching Jira issue.
Before you connect a sensitive Jira project, decide which Asana project should hold the tasks and who belongs to it. Syncing a restricted Jira project into a broadly shared Asana project exposes its issue titles and descriptions to everyone in that project.

When the native integration is not enough
Asana’s integrations listing points to two third-party routes that teams use when the native field set or trigger behavior does not fit their process.
- Unito Jira–Asana integration: described as two-way sync. Its listed mappings cover task and issue titles, descriptions, state, comments, assignees, labels or tags, due dates, attachments, links, and selected custom fields. This is the option to compare if you need labels or attachments that the native integration does not carry.
- Zapier Jira–Asana automation: a trigger-and-action path that lets you build a custom flow between the two tools. It suits teams that need conditional logic rather than a field-for-field mirror.
Asana’s listing confirms these options exist but does not give current prices, feature tiers, or terms for either product. Check each vendor’s own pages before choosing one.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The Jira Cloud app does not appear under Add App: confirm you are in the Asana project itself and that your account is not a guest.
- Tasks are not created for new issues: confirm the Jira project and issue type in Data sync settings match the issues you are creating, and that the trigger is set to When a Jira issue is added.
- Assignee is blank: check that the Jira and Asana accounts use the same email address and that Jira email visibility allows the match.
- A field is missing: compare the field against the unsupported list above and against the supported types in Asana’s field list.
- Changes in Asana do not reach Jira: confirm the update direction is configured and that your plan includes two-way data sync.
Plan labels, app navigation, and field support can change, so the steps above reflect Asana’s help and integration pages as they were reviewed in early October 2026. Those pages do not display publication dates, so confirm the current screens in your own account.
