Jimmy Kimmel’s reported response to a moment when Donald Trump appeared to doze off during a speech was: “The president right now is working very hard to right the ship that definitely isn’t sinking.” The line, attributed to Kimmel by Mashable Middle East, turns the apparent lapse into a political joke about a ship in trouble.
What Kimmel reportedly said
Mashable Middle East’s October 2, 2026 report, published under the byline Mashable Me, says Kimmel joked: “The president right now is working very hard to right the ship that definitely isn’t sinking.” The punchline pairs the image of a president supposedly steering a ship with an insistence that the ship is not sinking—a pointed contrast that supplies the joke.
What happened before the joke
The report describes Trump as appearing to fall asleep midway through a speech and says the moment gave Kimmel a setup. It does not name the speech, event or venue, and it does not establish why Trump appeared to doze off. The description should not be taken as confirmation that he was asleep.
What is known about the report
The available account is a Muck Rack listing for Mashable Middle East, not the original Mashable article or Kimmel’s broadcast clip. It says clips of the moment circulated online and characterizes reactions as mixed, but gives no platform, engagement figures or examples. The listing also says Kimmel has made similar jokes about Trump appearing to doze off at events, without identifying those occasions.
