For a live-coding demo in Rider, prioritize three things: code the audience can read, shortcuts you can use without thinking, and a project state you can recover if you make a mistake. Rider’s Presentation mode addresses the first; keymap and settings-transfer options help with the second; automatic saving and Local History provide limited recovery options. This guide reflects JetBrains Rider 2026.2 documentation, not a tested author configuration, so rehearse the exact setup you plan to use.
Make the code readable from the audience’s point of view
Rider’s Presentation mode is the documented view for showing code to an audience. It enlarges the editor font, expands the editor to fill the screen, and hides other interface elements. You can reveal those elements with shortcuts or through the main menu; rehearse both controls so you can recover the tool windows or menus you need without hunting during the demo.

Presentation mode is not the same as Distraction-free mode. Distraction-free mode centers the current source file and hides tool windows, toolbars, and tabs. Presentation mode is the one specifically described as increasing the font size for an audience. Full Screen is another viewing mode, but it is not a substitute for checking that code is legible at the actual display size and viewing distance.

Use a keymap your hands already know
Rider includes several predefined keymaps. The right choice is the one that matches your existing habits, not the one that looks most familiar to someone else. JetBrains recommends the Visual Studio 2022 keymap for Windows users coming from plain Visual Studio, and IntelliJ keymaps for users experienced with IDEs on the IntelliJ platform. Rider’s keymap documentation also lists options for VS Code and ReSharper users. On macOS, JetBrains recommends choosing a keymap with the macOS suffix.
Find the controls under Settings | Keymap on Windows and Linux, or Preferences | Keymap on macOS. If you alter a predefined map, Rider creates a copy for customization rather than changing the original. Keep changes deliberate: a shortcut you do not use routinely is one more thing to remember under pressure. Rehearse the commands you changed, and share the custom keymap if the demo will run in another Rider instance.

Carry a known-good setup to the demo machine
Rider offers two ways to transfer settings: account-based Backup and Sync, or exporting selected settings to a ZIP file and importing them on another instance. Use the route that suits the machines and account access available to you, then inspect the target Rider installation rather than assuming the transfer produced the expected result.

Use Backup and Sync when account-based sync fits
Backup and Sync can synchronize selected categories, including IDE themes, keymaps, color schemes, system and UI settings, editor settings, code completion, live templates, code styles, and enabled or disabled plugin states. Choose the categories relevant to the demo; syncing everything is not necessary if only a few settings matter.
Use an exported settings ZIP for a deliberate transfer
Rider can export selected settings to a ZIP file and import them in another instance. Export and import also support settings such as debugger and Git configuration. This is useful when you want an explicit file to carry or when account-based sync is not the right fit. After import, check the keymap, editor appearance, plugins, and any project-specific settings you rely on.

Recover settings carefully
If settings need to be restored, Rider documents restoring directory-based settings from a backup directory or exported ZIP. Resetting directory-based settings creates a backup directory. Layer-based settings are stored separately; JetBrains advises copying relevant .DotSettings files before resetting those layers. Treat this as a recovery procedure, not a last-minute substitute for verifying the demo machine.
Keep plugins intentional
Review plugins before the demo and disable ones you do not need. Rider supports installing plugins from Marketplace or from a local ZIP or JAR archive; installed plugins can also be enabled, disabled, updated, or removed. JetBrains says disabling unnecessary plugins can increase performance, but its documentation does not establish a specific gain or guarantee an improvement for a particular setup.

Plugin state is part of the setup you may transfer through Backup and Sync. Avoid changing plugins immediately before presenting unless you can test the resulting Rider instance and project first.
Understand what saving and recovery can—and cannot—do
JetBrains states that “JetBrains Rider automatically saves changes that you make in your files.” The documented save triggers include compiling, running, debugging, version-control operations, closing files or projects, and quitting Rider. You can also configure saving when switching applications or after a period of inactivity.
Rider documentation says changes can be found in Local History. That can help when you need to inspect or recover an earlier file state, but it is not a complete project backup. Use version control for project history and shared work; do not treat automatic saving or Local History as a replacement for commits or other backup practices.
A practical rehearsal sequence
Use this sequence as a checklist rather than an assumption that a successful settings transfer guarantees a smooth demo:
Quick Recap
- Open the project on the machine you will present from and confirm it builds or runs in the expected way.
- Select the intended keymap and operating-system-specific variant, then exercise the commands you will use live.
- Enable Presentation mode and check whether code remains readable from where the audience will sit. Practice revealing and hiding interface elements.
- Verify the theme, color scheme, editor settings, and any debugger or Git configuration the walkthrough depends on.
- Review plugin state and disable only what you have decided is unnecessary; then retest the project and workflow.
- Make a small reversible edit, trigger a documented save event, and locate the relevant Local History view so you know where to look if you need an earlier state.
