RAID can keep a Jellyfin server available after some drive failures, but it is not a backup and it cannot protect every part of your setup. A safer plan combines disk redundancy, a backup of Jellyfin’s database and configuration, independent copies you can restore, and current software with tightly controlled administrator access. This four-layer framework is a practical way to organize protection—not an official Jellyfin model.
Is RAID a backup?
No. RAID can preserve access to data when a supported array loses a drive, depending on its configuration, but it does not create an independent copy. Deletion, corruption, ransomware, an administrator mistake, or damage to the whole machine can affect the array and the data on it. RAID is an availability measure, not a substitute for backups.

Think about protection in terms of the failure you need to recover from. A RAID array may help with a disk failure; a separate backup can help with accidental deletion or corruption; an offline or offsite copy adds separation from the server and its normal access; and maintained software with restricted administrator access reduces exposure to some security and operational problems.
Four layers to protect a Jellyfin server
1. Disk redundancy for availability
Use RAID or another redundancy arrangement only if its benefits match your needs and you understand its limits. It can reduce downtime after some drive failures, but it does not replace a separate copy of your media or Jellyfin app state. Do not assume every home server needs RAID: a single-disk setup with reliable, independent backups may be a more sensible trade-off for some libraries.

2. A backup of Jellyfin’s app state
Your media files are only part of a Jellyfin installation. Its database, metadata, subtitles, trickplay data, and configuration can matter when rebuilding the server. Jellyfin’s built-in Backup/Restore feature, added in the 10.11 release series, can include the database, metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data. The database is always included. Check the documentation for your installed version before following version-specific directions: Jellyfin backup and restore documentation.
The built-in backup runs while Jellyfin is online. The project recommends running it during low activity and when no library scan is underway. Its documentation says the operation checks for at least 5 GB of free space, but warns that this may not be enough when subtitles or trickplay data are included. Make sure the destination has room for the archive you actually need.

Backup locations depend on how Jellyfin was installed. For example, the documentation gives different defaults for official Docker, Debian/Ubuntu, and Windows user or service installations. Confirm your configured data and configuration paths rather than assuming a default path applies to your server. Jellyfin also documents manually copying those directories; stop the server first, since copying while the database is locked can produce an unusable copy.

A backup stored beside the server is useful for some recovery situations, but it is not independent protection against losing the machine or its premises. General ransomware guidance describes the 3-2-1 approach as three copies, on two types of media, with one copy offsite. This is general guidance, not a Jellyfin requirement or a guarantee against loss. At minimum, keep a backup separate from the server’s normal write access—offline or otherwise isolated—and consider an offsite copy for site-level disasters. See Ransomware.org’s backup guidance.

A backup is not proven useful until you can restore it. Jellyfin documents restoring its built-in archive through the web interface or with the --restore-archive command-line option. Test the route you expect to use, and periodically test a full recovery rather than only checking that one file can be read. Ransomware.org likewise recommends regular testing, including full recovery tests.
4. Maintained software and controlled administrator access
Keep Jellyfin current and limit who can administer it. Jellyfin’s security policy says, “Only the most recent stable release of Jellyfin server is guaranteed to have security patches applied.” Administrator access can enable destructive actions, so grant it only to people who need it. Check Jellyfin’s current security advisories and the affected-version details before deciding whether a particular release addresses a specific issue: Jellyfin security advisories.

How to back up Jellyfin’s database and configuration
- Confirm your installed version and paths. Check the server version and identify the configured Jellyfin data and configuration directories. Paths vary by install method, so do not copy a default path without verifying it.
- Choose the built-in archive or a manual copy. In supported versions, use Jellyfin’s Backup/Restore feature to create an archive and select the optional metadata, subtitles, or trickplay data you want included. For a manual copy, stop Jellyfin before copying its data and configuration directories.
- Run the backup at a quiet time. For an online built-in backup, choose a low-activity period and ensure a library scan is not running. Check that the destination has enough free space, particularly if optional data is included.
- Copy the result somewhere independent. Do not leave the only archive on the Jellyfin server. Put another copy on a separate device or storage destination; keep at least one copy offline or otherwise isolated from routine server writes, and use an offsite copy if you need protection from loss of the premises.
- Test restoration. Follow Jellyfin’s restore documentation for the web UI or
--restore-archivepath. Verify that the recovered server has the expected database and app state, and periodically exercise full recovery.
Jellyfin warns, “Jellyfin does not have a downgrade mechanism.” Back up before upgrading, especially before installing an unstable release: after a newer version starts and applies pending migrations, reverting to an older version is not a supported downgrade path.

Keep media storage and Jellyfin’s database in the right places
Media storage and the server database have different requirements. Jellyfin says SMB or NFS storage should be mounted by the operating system, and recommends keeping the database local: “The Jellyfin database should also be stored locally and not on a network storage device.” Its storage guidance also warns that if media storage is unavailable during scheduled maintenance, items may be removed from the library. Ensure network storage is mounted and available when Jellyfin runs maintenance or scans.

Capacity planning matters, but published figures are examples, not promises. Jellyfin’s undated storage documentation, accessed in 2026, says a moderate-sized library database may grow from 10 to 100 GB. It also gives an example in which a 50 GB Blu-ray remux may transcode to about 15 to 60 GB, depending on bitrate. Leave appropriate room for database growth and transcoding rather than sizing storage from the media files alone.
Jellyfin’s current storage documentation describes SQLite and recommends ZFS record sizes of 4 or 8 KiB for a database dataset, while large-media datasets may suit 1 MiB records. These are storage-tuning recommendations, not backup protection: a well-tuned dataset still needs independent copies.
Which storage option covers which failure?
| Option | What it can help with | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| RAID array | Availability after some drive failures, depending on the array. | An independent backup against deletion, corruption, ransomware, administrator error, or loss of the whole machine. |
| Local backup drive | A separate copy that may help recover from accidental deletion or database corruption. | Protection from a disaster that also damages the drive, or from threats that can write to it while it is connected. |
| NAS | A useful storage or backup destination, including for a large library. | Offline or offsite protection merely because it is a separate device; access and location determine how independent it is. |
| Offline or offsite copy | Separation from routine server writes; an offsite location can address loss of the server’s premises. | A reliable recovery unless the copy is complete, accessible, and tested. |
Choose based on the amount of media and app state you need to recover, how much downtime you can accept, and how quickly you can restore from each destination. A NAS can be one part of the plan, but its presence alone does not make a backup offline or offsite.
