The clearest documented reason to keep paying for Plex is remote playback of your personal video library: Plex now requires a qualifying subscription or pass for that feature in affected apps. Jellyfin is a free alternative, but the available evidence does not establish that its remote access is easier, more private, or more reliable. The title does not specify the author’s personal reason, so remote streaming is the strongest supported explanation—not a claim about their actual usage.
What Plex makes free—and what it gates
Plex says its basic functionality is free, including local playback of personal content from Plex Media Server, as well as Plex’s ad-supported on-demand content and Live TV. The distinction is personal video streamed away from home: on affected apps, remote playback now requires a qualifying pass or subscription. Plex’s free-versus-paid overview explains the boundary.

The policy took effect on April 29, 2025. For remote personal-video playback in an affected app, Plex says one of three conditions must be met: the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer has Remote Watch Pass. Plex’s Remote Watch Pass support page describes the options, while the policy update tracks the rollout. Plex has expanded coverage over time, so check its current affected-app list before deciding whether your particular device is subject to the requirement.

| Situation | What Plex says is needed | Who benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Playing personal video on the home network | No paid pass is required, according to Plex’s free-versus-paid policy. | Local users of that server. |
| Remote viewer connects to a server whose administrator has Plex Pass | The server administrator’s Plex Pass satisfies the requirement on affected apps. | Other accounts streaming from that server remotely. |
| Viewer has their own Plex Pass | The viewer’s Plex Pass satisfies the requirement. | That viewer. |
| Viewer has Remote Watch Pass | The viewer’s Remote Watch Pass satisfies the requirement. | That account only; it does not extend to other full Plex accounts. |
This is why the cost can fall differently depending on how a library is shared. A server owner with Plex Pass can enable remote streaming for other accounts connecting to their server. A viewer who buys Remote Watch Pass covers their own account rather than unlocking remote viewing for everyone.

Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass?
Remote Watch Pass is the narrower choice: it enables remote streaming. Plex Pass includes remote streaming along with other premium features. Plex’s listed examples include Skip Credits, DVR recording when used with a compatible tuner and digital antenna, and premium Plexamp music features. Plex’s feature overview describes Plex Pass; check Plex’s current plan terms for availability and pricing in your region.
Plex announced introductory Remote Watch Pass prices of $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year in 2025. Those were launch prices, not a verified current price list. Check the current offer in Plex’s own account or support pages rather than relying on those historical figures.

Does Jellyfin remove the reason to pay?
Jellyfin is a free media-server alternative, and its official clients page documents its client ecosystem. That is useful when checking whether the devices you use are supported, but it does not establish how Jellyfin remote access compares with Plex in setup difficulty, privacy, or reliability. Those comparisons depend on the server, network, clients, and configuration; the available documentation does not justify a blanket winner.

If Plex’s supported remote playback flow is the feature you rely on, that is a concrete reason to keep it. If you are considering Jellyfin instead, verify its client availability and remote-access requirements for your setup rather than assuming the switch is effortless or equivalent.

What Plex remote access setup still involves
A paid pass does not replace the network configuration. Plex says remote access requires enabling Remote Access in Plex Media Server and signing in to a Plex account. Its server can attempt automatic router configuration through UPnP or NAT-PMP; manual port forwarding is an alternative if automatic configuration does not work. Follow Plex’s remote access setup guide for the current steps and troubleshooting.
Quick Recap
- Confirm Remote Access is enabled in the server settings.
- Make sure the server is signed in to the Plex account whose subscription or pass is relevant.
- If automatic router configuration fails, check Plex’s guide for manual port-forwarding steps and router-specific considerations.
