Java 25 compact source files can make a small Micronaut entry point shorter, but they do not, by themselves, make the application start faster. Micronaut’s Java guide uses a named Application class and passes that class and the command-line arguments to Micronaut.run. Micronaut 5.2 also documents an argument-only overload that discovers application classes, though the cited documentation does not establish that a compact source file is a supported or recommended deployment entry point.
What compact source files change in Java 25
A compact source file lets you write fields and methods without declaring an explicit class. The compiler still places those members in an implicitly declared class, so this is reduced source-code ceremony—not code that runs outside a class.

For example, a minimal Java 25 program can be written as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsvoid main() {
IO.println("Hello, world!");
}
Oracle describes the feature as a way for students to write first programs without first learning the full set of language features designed for larger programs. The syntax is also useful when a small example does not need a named application type. Oracle’s Java SE 25 language documentation calls the final feature “Compact Source Files and Instance Main Methods.”
Rules that matter for an application entry point
- The implicit class is final, top-level, in the unnamed package, and extends
Object. It has a zero-argument default constructor and cannot declare additional constructors. - Code cannot refer to the implicit class by name from Java source. It is intended for a standalone program or entry point, not as a reusable named application type.
- The file must contain a launchable
mainmethod. The launcher prefers an accessiblevoid main(String[] args); if none is present, it can use an accessible zero-argumentvoid main(). For an instance main method, the launcher creates an instance using the implicit class’s default constructor. - The Java launcher can run source directly, for example
java HelloWorld.java; alternatively, compile withjavac HelloWorld.javaand launch withjava HelloWorld. The generated class name is an implementation detail and is not available for reference in Java source.
Java 25 console I/O detail
Java 25 makes IO available through the implicit imports, but its static methods are not themselves imported. Use IO.println(...), or explicitly import the static method. The feature is permanent in Java SE 25 after preview releases in Java SE 21, 22, 23, and 24. Oracle’s Java SE 25 documentation describes the final rules and the change from the earlier preview terminology.
Micronaut’s documented entry point
The official Micronaut Java/Maven getting-started guide uses a conventional named class in a named package. It says Application.java is used when running the application via Gradle or deployment, and shows this bootstrap:
Rank #2
package example.micronaut;
import io.micronaut.runtime.Micronaut;
public class Application {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Micronaut.run(Application.class, args);
}
}
That form explicitly gives Micronaut the application class and forwards the command-line arguments. It is the documented baseline for a Micronaut project, rather than a compact source file. See the Micronaut Java/Maven guide.
Could a compact source file call Micronaut?
In principle, compact syntax can hold an instance main method that calls Micronaut. The hard part is not writing the call; it is giving the framework and the build or deployment process the application-class information they need. A compact file’s implicit class has no source-level name, so it cannot simply be supplied in the usual Micronaut.run(Application.class, args) form.
Micronaut 5.2’s API reference documents Micronaut.run(String... args), describing it as discovering application classes automatically, as well as overloads that take a Class<?> or Class<?>[]. That overload is a possible avenue to investigate if an explicit class argument is inconvenient; the API signature alone does not verify a compact-source configuration, packaging behavior, or deployment recommendation. Check the API for the exact Micronaut version in use and validate the result in the selected build and deployment setup. Micronaut 5.2 Micronaut API reference
What to compare before adopting it
For a small learning example, the reduced syntax may be worthwhile if the entry point builds and runs in the intended environment. For a production application, compare the practical integration costs rather than assuming fewer lines are automatically better.

- Entry-point clarity: Does the project need an explicitly named application class, or is automatic discovery suitable?
- Arguments: Are command-line arguments passed through to Micronaut as intended?
- Build and deployment: Do the selected Micronaut version, build tool, packaging, and deployment process include and find the intended application classes?
- Maintainability: Will teammates and project conventions benefit from a conventional named bootstrap class?
- Startup performance: If speed is the goal, measure startup with the same framework version, JDK, build mode, configuration, and runtime environment. A syntax-only comparison requires actual measurements.
Compact syntax is not a startup optimization
Micronaut’s getting-started guide attributes significantly improved startup time and reduced memory footprint for JVM-based applications to compiling ahead of time with GraalVM to produce a native executable. That is a distinct build and deployment approach, not a benefit established for compact source syntax. The cited documentation provides no benchmark comparing Micronaut startup with compact and conventional entry points. See the Micronaut getting-started guide for its GraalVM statement.
