Japan has not built a household battery that ends solar power. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) under a JAXA Space Strategy Fund project, is developing a compact americium-241 radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). A prototype is targeted for early 2029. Its projected output is only about 0.5 watts of electricity, but it could provide maintenance-free power for spacecraft and remote equipment where sunlight or servicing is unavailable.
What Japan actually announced
JAEA announced the development program on March 28, 2025. The project is a semipermanent generator combining an americium heater unit with a thermoelectric conversion device, not a finished commercial product. JAEA and AIST are working within a JAXA Space Strategy Fund theme running from March 2025 through February 2029, with a prototype targeted for the beginning of 2029.

The popular term is understandable, but this device does not store electricity like a lithium-ion battery and is not recharged in cycles. Americium-241 naturally releases heat as it decays. A sealed source supplies that heat to semiconductor thermoelectric elements; the temperature difference produces a voltage.

The operating chain is:
Am-241 radioactive decay → heat → temperature difference → thermoelectric conversion → electricity
There are no turbines or combustion and few moving parts. Technically, the planned system is an RTG-like radioisotope heat source coupled to a thermoelectric generator. Its electrical output gradually falls as the isotope decays, while the hardware, insulation, seals and electronics can age independently. (JAEA technology overview)
Why use americium-241?
Japan’s choice reflects supply as well as physics. Am-241 is produced as plutonium-241 decays and can be recovered from plutonium-containing material already held in Japan. JAEA says this offers a more practical and less costly domestic route than obtaining plutonium-238, the isotope used in many established American deep-space RTGs.

The trade-off is power density. JAEA says Am-241 produces about one-fifth as much heat per unit mass as Pu-238, but its half-life is much longer. That makes it attractive for low-power missions that value endurance and a Japanese supply chain over maximum watts per kilogram. JAEA also describes a regulatory pathway based on separated americium under radioactive-isotope rules rather than plutonium fuel-material controls; this can reduce some burdens but does not make the material harmless or unregulated. The numbers put the claim in perspective
The following are project targets from the JAXA Space Strategy Fund project sheet, not specifications of an operating product:
| Item | Target or reported value |
|---|---|
| Radioisotope | Americium-241 separated from plutonium |
| Am-241 per source pin | About 1.25 TBq, approximately 10 grams |
| Maximum pins per unit | 8 |
| Maximum activity | 10 TBq |
| Thermal output | About 8 watts (Wth) |
| Electrical output | About 0.5 watts (We) |
| Size | Less than 20 cm in diameter and height |
| Mass | Less than 4 kg |
| Development period | March 2025 to February 2029 |
| Prototype target | Beginning of 2029 |
Those figures imply roughly 6.25% thermal-to-electric conversion (0.5 W from 8 W), an inference from the published targets rather than a separately reported efficiency measurement. Half a watt can support a very low-power sensor, a small processor or intermittent communications. It cannot run a home, electric vehicle, data center or utility grid. A spacecraft may combine such continuous baseline power with batteries or capacitors for brief transmitter, motor or instrument peaks. (JAXA project sheet)
What has been demonstrated so far?
Material and fuel work
JAEA and its partners have reported chemically separating americium from plutonium-containing material and producing stabilized americium-oxide pellets. The intended production chain is to recover Am-241, convert it to a stable oxide, bake pellets, seal them in metal pins and assemble those pins into a heater unit.

LED proof of principle
In a demonstration, an existing sealed source containing approximately 20 grams of Am-241 produced about 2 watts of heat. A thermoelectric device used that heat to illuminate an LED. This confirms the basic conversion concept.

What that demonstration does not prove
- It is not evidence of a complete spacecraft generator.
- It does not establish survival through launch accidents, vacuum, radiation and thermal cycling.
- It does not show flight qualification, a launch, commercial availability or a guaranteed 2029 delivery.
The development path still includes heater-unit construction, containment and shielding tests, thermal design, environmental qualification, transport approval and mission-specific integration. (JAEA demonstration release)
What “more than 100 years” really means
Am-241 has a half-life of approximately 432 years. After one half-life, about half of the original radioactive atoms remain; the output declines continuously rather than stopping at a particular anniversary. In a simplified decay-only calculation, roughly 85% of the initial activity would remain after 100 years.
JAEA’s century-scale description therefore means a generator designed to operate without routine maintenance for more than 100 years, with declining available power. It does not mean 100 years of unchanged electrical output. Thermoelectric degradation, radiation damage, heat losses, insulation, seals, connectors and power electronics may determine useful mission life before the isotope is exhausted. Lunar night and permanent shadow
A lunar night lasts roughly two weeks. Missions in darkness or permanently shadowed regions cannot rely on ordinary sunlight, and batteries sized for the entire interval become heavy. A continuous heat source can keep low-power systems alive.
Inaccessible terrestrial sites
JAEA identifies polar, subsea and other remote environments as possible applications. In these settings, the advantage is not high output; it is avoiding battery replacement, refueling or maintenance where access is dangerous or impossible.
Where it cannot replace solar power
- It is far too small for household, industrial or grid-scale electricity.
- Near Earth, photovoltaic systems generally offer much higher power without radioactive material.
- It does not eliminate batteries or other peak-power systems.
- It does not provide constant full power for a century.
- It is not a high-output nuclear reactor for a lunar base or crewed installation.
Safety and engineering hurdles
The source must remain sealed through manufacture, transport, launch and operation. JAEA’s work includes pellet stabilization, metal-pin encapsulation, shielding, mechanical strength, heat transfer and transport-risk evaluation. Launch approval must address crash, fire, explosion and impact scenarios, while security and regulatory compliance remain mandatory.
A compact source also produces heat continuously, even when a spacecraft does not need electrical power, so the vehicle must reject or use that heat. Radiation and thermal cycling can degrade thermoelectric semiconductors, electronics and seals. If the electronics fail first, the isotope may continue generating heat. Finally, recovering and purifying Am-241 at useful scale requires specialized remote-handling facilities and a reliable regulatory supply chain.
How it compares with other power options
| Technology | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Solar photovoltaic | Sunlit spacecraft and terrestrial systems | Output falls with distance, eclipses, darkness and obstruction |
| Pu-238 RTG | Proven deep-space missions needing more heat per unit mass | Pu-238 is difficult and costly to obtain |
| Rechargeable battery | Peak loads and short eclipses | Stores energy but does not create century-scale energy alone |
| Radioisotope heater unit | Keeping hardware warm | Usually supplies heat, not electricity |
| Small nuclear reactor | Higher-power lunar or planetary facilities | Greater mass, complexity, cost and safety requirements |
Verdict
Japan’s project is real and potentially valuable, but the sensational headline gets its scale and purpose wrong. JAEA is developing a low-power Am-241 thermoelectric generator, with a prototype targeted for early 2029. Its significance is reliable, maintenance-free electricity in deep space, lunar darkness and other places where solar panels or technicians cannot help. It is not a commercial rechargeable battery, not a replacement for terrestrial solar power and not a century of unchanged output.
