Association directories list ventures across payments, lending, factoring, insurance, financial information, accounting, asset management, blockchain and risk tools. Those listings are useful for mapping the field, but they do not prove that a company is operating at scale or that its product is currently available.
How to read a map of Japanese fintech
“Japan’s fintech startups” can mean Japan-based ventures or companies serving the Japanese market. The directories below include a mix of both, alongside mature financial institutions and technology vendors. Treat a directory category as a label assigned by the association—not as an independent assessment of a company’s product, traction, financial health or market position.

The Fintech Association of Japan’s venture-member directory offers a useful starting point for identifying companies by category. Its separate corporate-member directory is broader and includes established firms, so membership there alone is not evidence that an organization is a startup.
Payments and financial infrastructure
Japan’s payment ecosystem includes consumer-facing services as well as the infrastructure and financial-data connections behind them. The Electronic Payment Service Providers Association’s member list provides one view of that layer. As of 2026-10-01, it listed 36 members: 22 first-class and six second-class members, alongside other members. The association describes first-class membership as including registered payment agency operators that mainly use bank open APIs or other registered operators; second-class membership includes firms aiming to register.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Named first-class members include Money Forward, Moneytree, freee, Airwallex Japan and SMBC Card. Klarna Japan and SBI Neo Financial Platform are examples of second-class members. These membership classes describe the association’s categories, not whether a company is a startup or how widely a particular service is used. See the association’s member list for its current listings.
The Fintech Association of Japan’s venture directory also includes firms in payment and transfer-related categories. It can help surface names for further investigation, but does not establish company scale or comparable adoption figures.

Lending, factoring and credit
The venture directory places iYell in lending and loans and OLTA in factoring. Cloud Loan, Impact Circle, AMFC Japan and WINWILL also appear in broad lending- or credit-related areas. These labels are a starting point, not enough to establish the details of each firm’s services, customer eligibility, current availability or regulatory role.

Insurance
Hokan Group, iChain, Protosure Japan and justInCase Technologies are listed under insurance in the venture directory. The category shows where the association places them; it does not compare their business models or confirm which products are currently available. Readers evaluating a specific service should verify its present offering and the company’s role directly.
Wealth, asset management and financial information
Moneytree appears in the financial-information category. In asset-management and related categories, the directory includes fundnote, LUCA Japan and MILIZE. These names sit within a broader financial-services ecosystem: the association’s corporate directory also lists established asset managers and financial institutions, which should not all be described as startups.

Accounting, data, compliance and blockchain
The venture directory’s categories extend beyond transactions and investments to operational tools and enabling technology:

The Japan Financial Innovation Award 2026 startup page highlights several announcements that illustrate the range of problems fintech ventures address. It is a selection of award-page examples, not a comprehensive shortlist or an adoption ranking.
- Trinity Technology: The award page describes its “Ohisapo” service as supporting older people living alone and says the service has business ties with 20 banks.
- Recept: The page lists proovy, described there as a bank venture-capital service.
- Digital Wallet: The page lists a TAX REFUND JAPAN international-remittance announcement.
- BANKEY: The page lists a launch announcement for bank-account-based Pay By Bank.
These descriptions reflect the award page and its linked announcements; they do not establish market share, customer adoption or current availability. See the Japan Financial Innovation Award 2026 page for the listed examples.

How to assess a fintech company beyond its directory listing
A directory is a discovery tool. To judge whether a company fits a particular need, investigate the points that listings typically cannot settle:
- Who it serves: Consumers, small businesses, banks and other institutions have different requirements.
- What it actually provides: Distinguish a financial product from software, data services or a connection to another provider.
- Regulatory role: Check the relevant official register rather than inferring a license from an association category.
- Availability and geography: Confirm that the service is operating now and serves the user’s location and use case.
- Evidence of scale: Look for independently sourced adoption, funding or revenue data if scale matters; the directories and award examples here do not provide a like-for-like basis for ranking firms.
For a wider view of the startup landscape, the Japan Exchange Group’s 2025 TSE Asia Startup Hub supported-companies list is another distinct source. Its scope is not the same as a fintech association directory, so it should be used as a separate lens rather than merged into a single fintech ranking.
