Neha Bora, president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), called for protesters to gather at Jantar Mantar at 1 p.m. on October 3, after a protest there on October 2 over the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Police detained demonstrators, but reports gave different totals and scopes. LiveMint later reported that Bora was detained again on October 3, so her call does not establish that the gathering proceeded uninterrupted.
What the protest was about
Political leaders, student organisations and other activists gathered around Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on October 2, 2026. Protesters objected to the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the SIR exercise, and called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Those were the demonstrators’ demands and concerns; the reports cited here do not independently establish wrongdoing in the revision process.
Hindustan Times’ October 2 live coverage reported the protest and Bora’s call for another gathering. LiveMint’s live coverage relayed allegations and political claims about SIR, which should be understood as claims rather than verified findings.
Will the Jantar Mantar protest continue on October 3?
Bora announced a 1 p.m. gathering at Jantar Mantar on October 3. LiveMint later reported that she was detained again near Jantar Mantar that day. The available reports establish the call and the subsequent detention, but not that a protest continued without interruption or proceeded as planned.

Why were protesters detained, and what restrictions were reported?
LiveMint reported that permission for the protest had not been granted and that prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in force in New Delhi district. The underlying police order was not available in the reporting cited here, so its precise terms and rationale cannot be independently described.
Hindustan Times reported that entry and exit gates at 12 metro stations were closed during the October 2 events. The outlet later quoted a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation service update saying all gates across the Delhi network were open. This is a report of temporary station-gate closures and reopening, not evidence that the metro network as a whole stopped operating.
