A 2025 study found that hydrogen isotope values separated the elephant and mammoth samples it tested, while oxygen values added useful evidence with a small overlap. The method requires a physical ivory sample and specialist laboratory equipment.
Why distinguishing mammoth ivory from elephant ivory matters
Worked mammoth and elephant ivory can be difficult to tell apart. That creates an opportunity to misrepresent elephant ivory as mammoth ivory, a concern highlighted by the Natural History Museum. The trade rules applying to the two materials can differ, but identifying the species is only one part of establishing whether a particular item may legally be sold.

Professor Adrian Lister of the Natural History Museum has warned that illegal ivory objects can be described or disguised as mammoth ivory, compromising efforts to stop elephant ivory trade. The museum’s account of the issue describes a separate non-destructive analysis approach as well.

What the 2025 isotope study found
Santos and colleagues’ paper, “A mammoth task: stable isotope analyses as a tool to prevent illegal trade of elephant ivory,” was published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution on 24 June 2025. The researchers examined 79 objects: 44 identified as elephant ivory and 35 as mammoth ivory. Elephant samples came from seizures by Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Mammoth material came from Siberian carvers and objects from markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The authors did not know the precise geographical origins or species identification of the mammoth material.

The team measured five isotope systems: carbon (δ¹³C), hydrogen (δ²H), nitrogen (δ¹⁵N), oxygen (δ¹⁸O) and sulfur (δ³⁴S). Hydrogen was the clearest discriminator: δ²H values for the two groups did not overlap in this sample set. Oxygen provided additional separation, but two elephant samples fell within the mammoth δ¹⁸O range.
The first two principal components explained more than 99% of the variation in this dataset, with δ²H contributing 96.9% and δ¹⁸O 2.7%. Those figures describe how the measurements varied in the study; they are not a real-world accuracy rate. Although some group differences were statistically significant, carbon, nitrogen and sulfur values overlapped, and nitrogen did not show a statistically significant group difference. The authors’ results point to a multi-element approach centered on hydrogen and oxygen rather than treating every isotope as equally diagnostic. Read the 2025 study.

How stable isotope analysis works—and what it requires
Stable isotope measurements look for ratios of naturally occurring isotopes incorporated into material as it formed. In the 2025 protocol, researchers drilled ivory to obtain powder, cleaned and dried the samples, then analyzed subsamples using elemental analysis continuous-flow isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. The study reports a minimum requirement of 5 mg of powder.

It also requires specialist laboratory equipment and interpretation against appropriate reference material. It is not a scan that an owner can perform at home, and the study does not establish a standard consumer test or routine service price.

How reliable is the result beyond the study?
The finding of no hydrogen-value overlap is encouraging, but it applies to the 79 objects examined—not every mammoth and elephant ivory object worldwide. The sample was modest, and the mammoth specimens’ exact origins and species identifications were unknown. A larger, more geographically representative reference collection would be important for assessing how well the approach generalizes.
Reference comparisons also require care: the article discusses offsets used when comparing measurements with reference databases, and the study chose not to extract collagen. A laboratory result should therefore be interpreted within its protocol and reference framework, not converted into a blanket claim that isotope analysis can identify every object correctly.

How isotope analysis compares with other methods
| Method | What it can help establish | Sampling and turnaround | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable isotope analysis | Can help distinguish species groups through isotope signatures; the 2025 study found hydrogen and oxygen most useful. | The studied protocol needs at least 5 mg of drilled powder and specialist mass spectrometry. No standard end-to-end turnaround or comparable market price is stated. | Promising separation in a 79-object study; performance beyond those specimens is not established. |
| Raman spectroscopy | Analyzes chemical composition and has been used to distinguish mammoth and elephant ivory samples. | The Natural History Museum describes it as non-destructive and says a scan takes a few minutes. | A separate technology from stable isotope analysis; the museum account reports testing on museum samples, not a universal accuracy rate. |
| DNA analysis | Can identify species. A research article reports distinguishing extant elephant ivory from mammoth ivory using a short cytochrome-b gene sequence. | Sampling needs and turnaround are not stated in the cited article summary. | Addresses species identity, not by itself the legal status or age of an object. |
| Radiocarbon and related radionuclide measurements | Can help estimate age; a 2018 paper describes combining radiocarbon with strontium-90 and thorium isotope measurements when age findings are ambiguous. | Sampling needs, standard turnaround and comparable market price are not stated in the cited paper summary. | Age assessment is not the same question as species identification. |
The methods answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable. The reviewed sources do not establish a head-to-head comparison of costs or total turnaround times. The Raman account is the one that specifically describes a scan lasting minutes; that timing should not be attributed to the isotope workflow.

Can isotope analysis prove ivory is legal?
No. A species finding, an age estimate, documentation and legal authorization are separate pieces of evidence. EU guidance recognizes radiocarbon dating or isotope analysis as possible supporting information about age or origin, but says that establishing age alone is not sufficient to prove legal acquisition. That is an EU-specific evidentiary point, not a summary of every country’s law. Anyone considering a sale, purchase or import should check the rules and documentation requirements for the relevant jurisdiction and transaction. See the European Commission’s CITES and wildlife-trade guidance.
