Where an iPhone or iPad backup is stored in Windows 11 depends on which Apple app created it. Press Windows key + R, then enter %USERPROFILE% for Apple Devices or iTunes downloaded from the Microsoft Store. For traditional iTunes, enter %AppData%; Apple says the Help > Check for Updates menu identifies that version. Apple’s current Windows instructions use these environment-variable locations rather than one fixed path.
Which location should you open?
| Apple app used | What to enter in Run | How to identify it |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Devices | %USERPROFILE% |
Use Apple Devices to manage the connected iPhone or iPad. |
| iTunes from the Microsoft Store | %USERPROFILE% |
Apple says this version updates automatically. |
| Traditional iTunes | %AppData% |
In iTunes, check whether Help > Check for Updates is present; Apple identifies this menu item with traditional iTunes. |
These entries open the relevant Windows location Apple specifies; they are not a guarantee that a particular backup exists there. The exact folder may depend on which app created the backup and the Windows installation or profile in use.

Find the backup folder with Run
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%USERPROFILE%if the backup was made with Apple Devices or Microsoft Store iTunes. Enter%AppData%if it was made with traditional iTunes. - Press Enter to open that location in File Explorer.
If you are unsure which iTunes version is installed, open iTunes and look for Help > Check for Updates. Apple’s guidance associates that option with traditional iTunes, which is updated manually through Help.

If the backup does not appear
- Check which app created it. Apple Devices and Microsoft Store iTunes use the
%USERPROFILE%starting location; traditional iTunes uses%AppData%. - Confirm the device is available in Apple Devices. Select it if needed, accept any trust prompt, and then inspect General > Manage Backups.
- Do not treat a location as proof of a backup. Apple’s instructions give the relevant starting location, but they do not establish that every PC has a backup there, including customized profiles or migrated installations.
- If Microsoft Store iTunes appears to use the other location, Apple says that can indicate a file-location problem or a corrupted installation. Its updates are automatic; the location discrepancy alone does not establish which issue is present.
