It’s Time for Roku to Borrow Fire TV’s Best Ideas—Without Copying Its Storefront

Roku could borrow Fire TV’s profiles and organized discovery while preserving the cross-service search and service choice that make its own approach valuable.

Roku should consider borrowing two useful ideas from Amazon’s Fire TV platform: profiles that tailor recommendations for different household members, and clearer ways to organize discovery. It should do so without giving up the cross-service search and streaming-service visibility that are among Roku’s reported strengths. This is a recommendation based on documented features and an editorial comparison—not evidence of a Roku roadmap or announced copycat feature.

What Roku could learn from Fire TV

Profiles that make a shared TV feel personal

Amazon says Fire TV profiles can personalize watchlists, viewing history, recommendations, watch progress and Amazon Music. Profiles can also customize some apps, channels and settings. That is useful in a household where one shared television serves people with different tastes: a recommendation or half-finished show for one viewer need not define the experience for everyone.

There are limits. Subscriptions, rentals and purchases are shared across profiles, and Amazon says a device can have up to six profiles, including no more than four Amazon Kids profiles. Amazon also lists original Fire TV, second-generation Fire TV and first-generation Fire TV Stick among devices without profiles. Availability therefore depends on the specific hardware generation. Amazon’s Fire TV profile guidance explains the details.

Navigation that makes discovery easier to scan

Fire TV’s home screen separates areas such as My Stuff, Games, Find, Music & More, Free, Live, profiles and Apps. Amazon describes Find as a place to search for videos and Amazon Appstore apps or browse categories; Live leads to supported live-TV apps and subscriptions. Those sections offer a useful organizing principle: make it easier to start with the kind of thing a viewer wants, rather than expecting every discovery task to begin with one undifferentiated row of recommendations. Amazon documents the layout in its Fire TV home-screen guide.

What Roku should preserve

The goal should not be to make Roku look like Fire TV. TechRadar’s editorial comparison describes Roku as strong in universal search, app coverage, free content and live-TV discovery. It describes Fire TV as app-rich and Alexa-integrated, with strong universal search, but characterizes its interface as ad-heavy and Amazon-forward. These are the publication’s qualitative judgments, not results from a controlled speed or usability test. TechRadar’s platform comparison provides its assessment.

That trade-off suggests a sensible boundary for any Roku redesign: add personalization and more legible discovery routes, but keep the viewer’s choice of service prominent. A profile should help people find what they want across their apps, not quietly turn the home screen into a storefront for one platform’s own content. Roku’s current product page advertises voice search across apps, access to apps and free content, and a Voice Remote with TV power and volume. Those are useful foundations for discovery rather than reasons to replace Roku’s approach wholesale. Roku’s Streaming Stick page describes its current product lineup and features.

How the platforms differ on the questions that matter

Question What the available documentation says What Roku could take from it
Can viewers search across services? Roku advertises voice search across apps. TechRadar describes both Roku and Fire TV as strong in universal search. Make search results and the ways to watch easy to understand, while keeping service choice central.
Can a household personalize the experience? Amazon documents Fire TV profiles for recommendations, watchlists, history, progress and some settings. The cited Roku materials do not establish an equivalent profile feature. Consider household profiles, with clear explanations of what is personalized and what remains shared.
How easy is it to reach live and free viewing? Amazon documents separate Live and Free areas. Roku advertises access to free content, and TechRadar praises its live-TV discovery. Roku’s page lists “500+ live TV channels” for The Roku Channel, but does not date that figure. Keep live and free choices easy to find without implying that channel availability is identical in every region.
How are voice and smart-home features positioned? Roku lists voice search on its product page; TechRadar describes Fire TV as Alexa-integrated. The cited sources do not establish a like-for-like comparison of voice features across devices. Improve discovery without assuming every viewer wants a voice assistant or smart-home controls at the center of the interface.
How much does the interface promote the platform itself? TechRadar characterizes Fire TV as Amazon-forward and ad-heavy. The cited sources do not quantify sponsored placements across either platform. Borrow organization and personalization, not a more aggressive storefront.
Will every device behave the same way? Roku’s feature history includes changes that vary by market and device; Amazon documents some Fire TV generations that lack profiles. The cited comparisons do not support a universal speed ranking. Roll out changes with device and regional compatibility in mind, and explain where they are available.

Roku’s updates point toward discovery, but not a confirmed copy

Roku’s OS feature history says its November 2025 update added search inside What to Watch and Live TV Zone, along with Bluetooth Headphone Mode for Roku Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus. The same history includes market-specific changes, including features for the UK and Brazil, so a feature listing is not proof that every viewer or model has it. Check Roku’s OS feature history for device and market context.

Separately, TV Tech reported on October 16, 2025, that Roku had announced live sports scores, AI-powered voice discovery, interactive trailers, “Ways to Watch” and planned search expansion, with software updates expected in the coming months. That is a dated report of an announcement; it does not establish that each feature has since rolled out to every Roku device. TV Tech’s report covers the announcement.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K with Voice Remote - HDR10+ & Dolby Vision | Compact 4K Streaming Device for TV with Roku Voice Remote & Long-Range Wi-Fi - Free & Live Local News, Sports
  • Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
  • Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

These developments make better discovery a relevant direction for Roku, but they do not show that Roku intends to copy Fire TV’s profiles or home-screen sections. The case for borrowing those ideas is an editorial judgment about what could complement Roku’s documented search and content-discovery features—not a prediction about what Roku will build.

Which Roku stick fits the television?

If you are choosing hardware while considering the platform, Roku currently lists several sticks rather than one universal option. Its product page identifies the Streaming Stick (HD), model 3840R, with up to 1080p output and dual-band Wi-Fi; the Streaming Stick Plus offers 4K with HDR10+, and the Streaming Stick 4K adds Dolby Vision and long-range Wi-Fi. A 4K or HDR format only helps when the television and the content also support it. Check Roku’s current lineup and specifications for model details.

Fire TV is an operating system found on streaming sticks as well as built-in Fire TV televisions, so “Fire TV” and a particular Fire TV Stick are not interchangeable hardware references. Amazon’s home-screen and profile documentation describes platform features, not the specifications or current retail availability of a specific stick model. The cited material does not support a direct hardware-performance comparison.
