IT Services Stocks vs. Software Stocks: Growth Drivers and Risks

IT services firms grow through client projects and delivery capacity; software companies rely more on product adoption, subscriptions, seats, and usage. Their risks differ, especially around labor, retention, margins, and AI.

IT services stocks and software stocks can both benefit from business technology spending, but they earn revenue in different ways. Services firms sell expertise and delivery capacity; software firms sell products or access to intellectual property, often through subscriptions. That distinction shapes what drives growth, how margins respond, and which risks investors should compare. Many large technology companies blend the two, so a company’s actual revenue mix matters more than its label.

How the two business models make money

IT services: expertise, projects, and delivery

IT services providers may design, build, migrate, integrate, maintain, or operate technology for clients. Their work can include consulting, application development and support, research and development, technology infrastructure, and business-process services. Wipro lists these activities among its IT services offerings in its FY2025 annual filing.

Revenue growth depends on client budgets and project demand translating into awarded work, project starts, and delivered revenue. Large deal wins, modernization programs, cloud and data projects, AI implementation, cross-selling, and market-share gains can all help. But a strong pipeline is not the same as recognized revenue: growth also depends on backlog conversion, available skills and staffing, and profitable execution.

Software: products, subscriptions, and usage

Software companies monetize products through licenses, subscriptions, cloud-hosted access, or usage-linked pricing. A subscription can create recurring revenue, with growth coming from new customers, renewals, more seats or usage, pricing, or expansion into additional products and use cases. Gartner, for example, describes subscription services that provide access to published content, data, and benchmarks, as well as a network of business and technology experts.

Recurring revenue can make sales more visible, but it does not guarantee stable growth. Renewal rates, churn, customer concentration, pricing, usage patterns, and the cost of serving customers all matter. Microsoft’s FY2025 disclosure illustrates how subscription growth can combine customer expansion and higher revenue per user: Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud revenue grew 15%, while commercial seat growth was 6%.

What drives growth—and what the examples do not prove

Evidence What it says How to interpret it
Wipro IT Services, FY2025 Segment revenue decreased 0.63%; revenue from its top five and top ten IT Services customers rose 4.8% and 5.9%, respectively. These are Wipro-specific results, not a measure of the whole services sector. They show why a company’s segment growth and customer mix should be examined together.
Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud, FY2025 Revenue grew 15%; commercial seat growth was 6%. This is a Microsoft product-specific example, not a software-industry growth rate. Microsoft attributed growth to small and medium businesses and frontline worker offerings, as well as revenue per user.
Indian IT services outlook, July 16, 2026 CRISIL Ratings forecast sector revenue growth of 1–3% for the fiscal outlook discussed in its release. This is a dated forecast for Indian IT services, not a global result or realized growth figure. CRISIL cited AI-driven disruption, weak discretionary spending, and geopolitical uncertainty. It said 5–7% rupee depreciation could support revenue growth and operating profitability in that fiscal year, with the tailwind expected to fade the following year.

The figures are not a matched comparison of sectors: they cover different companies, geographies, business scopes, and periods. Use them as illustrations of the growth mechanisms and risks, not as evidence that one category is growing faster overall.

How AI can help—and pressure—both categories

AI may create work for services firms when clients need help moving from experiments to production, modernizing data systems, or integrating AI into cloud and business processes. Wipro’s filing identifies these areas as potential sources of investment. Services providers may also gain productivity from AI, but the effect on delivery staffing, pricing, and margins will depend on how projects and contracts evolve.

Software vendors may add AI features, build new products, or offer higher-value tiers. At the same time, AI could make some products less differentiated, alter how many seats customers need, or increase infrastructure and inference costs. The available company disclosures do not establish a single net effect for software stocks as a group.

AI infrastructure demand can also be a growth source and a concentration risk at once. Cisco reported that hyperscaler customers purchasing AI infrastructure represented approximately 6% of its total revenue in FY2026, compared with less than 2% in FY2025. Cisco’s filing discusses the related customer concentration and supply considerations. This is Cisco-specific evidence, not a sector-wide measure.

Risks investors should compare

Demand and budget sensitivity

  • Services: clients can defer, reduce, or cancel projects when budgets tighten, particularly discretionary transformation work.
  • Software: new purchases may slow, customers may delay adoption, and renewals or expansion can weaken even when products are subscription-based.

CRISIL’s July 2026 Indian IT-services outlook cited weak discretionary spending as a headwind for that regional sector outlook.

Labor, capacity, and margins

Services delivery depends on access to skilled workers, utilization, wage levels, subcontractor costs, pricing, and the ability to staff projects on time. CRISIL’s India outlook specifically identified scaling AI engagements, protecting margins, competition, and access to AI-skilled talent as relevant business risks.

Software economics depend on a different cost base: hosting, cloud infrastructure, AI inference, customer support, product development, and customer acquisition can affect margins. A subscription business still needs to show that revenue growth translates into sustainable economics.

Retention, concentration, and execution

For software, examine churn and renewals alongside seat or usage trends, price changes, customer concentration, and the product’s continued usefulness. For services, look at client concentration, project starts, backlog conversion, and whether growth is broad-based or dependent on a few large accounts.

Both models can be exposed to concentration in major customers, industries, platforms, products, or geographies. A large customer win can lift results, but dependence on a small number of buyers can amplify the effect of delayed spending or a lost contract.

Valuation and expectations

A strong business can still be a poor investment if its share price assumes more growth or margin improvement than it can deliver. Compare valuation against company-specific expectations for growth, retention, margins, and cash generation. The examples above do not provide current valuation multiples or matched share-price performance, so they cannot support a live ranking of services and software stocks.

A practical framework for comparing two companies

Use the same fiscal period and currency where possible, and start with each company’s segment definitions. Then compare the operating measures that fit each revenue model:

Comparison axis IT services questions Software questions
Revenue visibility How are bookings, backlog conversion, renewals, and project starts trending? How are recurring or subscription revenue, renewals, churn, seats, and usage trending?
Growth quality Is growth organic and broad across clients, and can the provider deliver it profitably? Is growth driven by new customers, expansion, pricing, or acquisitions—and does it persist?
Margins and capacity What are utilization, wages, subcontractors, and talent availability doing to margins? How do hosting, cloud, AI inference, support, and development costs affect margins?
Concentration How much revenue depends on a few clients, industries, or geographies? How much depends on a few customers, platforms, distribution channels, or products?
AI exposure Is AI creating implementation work, productivity gains, or substitution risk? Does AI strengthen the product and monetization, or threaten seats, differentiation, or costs?
Cash and investment How much working capital and hiring are needed to support growth? How much is spent on research and development, infrastructure, acquisitions, and customer acquisition?
Valuation What growth and margin assumptions are already reflected in the price? What growth, retention, and margin assumptions are already reflected in the price?

For mixed businesses, apply the framework to the relevant segments rather than treating the whole company as a pure-play peer. A services provider with a substantial software business and a cloud platform with consulting revenue may have materially different economics from companies whose revenue is concentrated in one model.
