ISP Wi-Fi Routers: Why I Prefer to Choose My Own

Choosing your own router can give you more control over settings and updates, but it does not automatically make Wi-Fi safer or faster. Check what your ISP gateway does and what your provider supports before switching.

I prefer to choose my own Wi-Fi router because it gives me more control over its settings, features, and software updates. That is a personal preference, not proof that every ISP-provided router is insecure or that buying a router automatically improves security or speed. The practical question is whether your current equipment meets your needs—and whether you can change it without losing services your provider supplies through its gateway.

What a router change does—and does not—replace

A router connects your home devices to one another and routes their traffic to the internet. It does not provide internet service by itself. Depending on your connection, your home may also rely on a modem, an optical network terminal (ONT), or an ISP gateway that combines several functions. A router product may still need an active ISP connection and a modem to work, as Linksys support explains.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before replacing or returning equipment, identify what it does. A gateway may include provider-specific functions for voice, television or IPTV, or MoCA networking, as well as the modem and router. The FCC’s technical appendix to the Tenth Measuring Broadband America Report describes study deployments in which an ISP gateway provided features the study device did not.

Why I prefer control over the router

With equipment I select, I can make a more informed choice about wireless security, administrator access, and how software updates are delivered. Those are useful reasons to care about router control, but ownership alone does not make a network secure. A personally purchased router still needs suitable settings and ongoing software support; an ISP router may already provide them.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique administrator and Wi-Fi credentials, and current router software. It also advises customers with ISP-provided routers to ask their provider whether automatic updates are sent. If a router only supports obsolete WPA or WEP security and an update cannot add WPA2 or WPA3, the FTC says replacement may be warranted. These are checks to make on your equipment, not evidence that ISP routers as a class lack modern security. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.

Update practices deserve attention when choosing a device. NIST IR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, outlines cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade routers, including secure, authorized software updates and keeping firmware current through automatic updates or consistent customer notification. It is a framework for questions to ask about support—not a certification of any specific retail router.

Check security settings on any router

Whether the router belongs to you or your ISP, use these checks as a starting point:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption if the router and your devices support it.
  • Replace default administrator credentials and set a unique Wi-Fi password.
  • Install current software, and ask your ISP how updates are delivered if it manages the router.
  • Review remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). The FTC identifies these as features that can weaken security and advises turning them off. First confirm whether you need them; disabling a feature can affect convenience or device compatibility.

Choose whether to keep, add, or replace equipment

The right setup depends on your connection, provider, and household—not on a rule that everyone should replace an ISP router.

Option When it may fit Check before proceeding
Keep the ISP gateway It meets your coverage and security needs, or supplies functions you rely on. Ask about software updates, available security settings, and any equipment charge.
Add your own router behind the gateway You want a different router while keeping the provider’s gateway or its additional functions. Check the ISP and device documentation for a supported bridge or access-point configuration. Without an appropriate arrangement, two routing devices can create double NAT.
Replace the gateway Your provider allows customer-owned equipment and the replacement supports the services on your connection. Confirm compatibility and whether a separate modem or ONT must remain. Ask how voice, IPTV, MoCA, and provider-managed functions will work.

The FCC appendix describes transparent-bridge operation to avoid double NAT in certain study deployments. That illustrates a configuration concept; it is not a universal instruction to bridge every gateway. The correct mode and setup depend on your ISP and equipment, so follow their documentation rather than assuming a particular menu path will apply.

What to check before buying or switching

  1. Identify the existing equipment. Determine whether you have a standalone router, a modem-router gateway, an ONT, or another access device.
  2. Ask the provider what must remain. Check whether it permits a customer-owned router or gateway, and which equipment or functions are required for internet, voice, television, IPTV, MoCA, or provider management.
  3. Pick a supported configuration. If keeping the gateway, check whether the ISP documents a bridge or access-point mode for your intended setup. If replacing equipment, verify that the provider supports the replacement for your connection.
  4. Compare support and security features. Check the update policy and support lifecycle, WPA3 or WPA2 support, administrator controls, and whether the router can cover your home and work with your devices.
  5. Set it up securely. Change default credentials, configure Wi-Fi security, update software, and decide whether remote management, WPS, and UPnP are necessary for your setup.
  6. Compare your actual costs. Weigh your provider’s equipment charge against the purchase cost of compatible equipment. The sources reviewed do not establish a general rental-saving amount or payback period.

Will a different router make Wi-Fi faster?

It might help if your current router is the bottleneck, but a replacement does not guarantee faster internet. The FCC’s Measuring Broadband America material treats the broadband connection, home network, and consumer devices as distinct parts of the path and notes that router limitations can affect experienced or measured performance. Placement, interference, client devices, your internet service, and other network bottlenecks can also matter. If the problem is outside the router, changing it may not resolve it.
