For ISO 3166-1 country and territory entries whose English short names begin with F through M, the two-letter alpha-2 and three-letter alpha-3 codes are listed below. For example, France is FR / FRA and Germany is DE / DEU. ISO also defines three-digit numeric codes; these identifiers are different from telephone calling codes.
ISO country codes from F to M
This lookup follows English short-name ordering. It includes ISO 3166-1 entries for countries, territories and other areas, not just sovereign states. Use the alpha-2 or alpha-3 column as required by the system you are using.

What the three ISO 3166 code formats mean
ISO 3166 defines internationally recognized codes for referring to countries and their subdivisions; it does not define country names. ISO says names are drawn from United Nations sources. The standard is divided into current country names, subdivisions, and formerly used country names.

These are identifiers for structured uses such as postal exchange, internet domains, machine-readable passports, banking, logistics, telecommunications, travel and medical information. They are not interchangeable in every application: check which representation and which country set the receiving system accepts.

Common lookups and naming exceptions
France and Germany
France is FR (alpha-2) or FRA (alpha-3). Germany is DE or DEU; the alpha-2 code is not simply the first two letters of its English name.
What FK means
FK is the alpha-2 code for Falkland Islands (Malvinas); its alpha-3 code is FLK.

Why Ivory Coast is not listed under I
The ISO English short name is Côte d’Ivoire, alphabetized under C, with codes CI and CIV. It is not an F–M entry in English short-name ordering, though readers looking for “Ivory Coast” may expect it here.

Why some entries do not resemble familiar country names
The list includes areas and territories as well as countries. For example, the Holy See has VA / VAT, while French Guiana has GF / GUF. An ISO assignment alone does not decide sovereignty or political recognition; ISO notes that some entries remain for historical reasons even though they do not meet its current definition of a country.
ISO codes are not telephone calling codes
ISO 3166 alpha-2, alpha-3 and numeric-3 are country and area identifiers. A telephone calling code belongs to a different numbering system. If a form asks for a calling code, do not enter an ISO alpha-2 or alpha-3 value unless the form explicitly requests that format.

Codes and names can change. ISO describes its Online Browsing Platform (OBP) as always up to date; consult it when accuracy is essential or when validating an implementation. RIPE NCC’s country-code reference uses official ISO English short names in alphabetical order and says it updates its list when ISO 3166/MA changes the official list.
