The label alone does not tell you what return, fee, risk or service terms apply to a particular account or loan-like financing product; those depend on its contract and provider.
How the two banking models differ
| Aspect | Islamic banking | Conventional banking |
|---|---|---|
| Stated basis | Financial activity is intended to comply with Shariah principles and avoid interest-based operations, as described by Bangladesh Bank in its Annual Report 2024–2025 and its bank and financial institution classifications. | Bangladesh Bank describes conventional banking as interest-based in the same sources. |
| How products are structured | Products may use Shariah-based contractual structures, but a syllabus listing a structure does not establish that every bank or account uses it. | Conventional services follow interest-based banking principles; the precise rate and other terms remain product-specific. |
| Where it is offered | By full-fledged Islamic banks and through Islamic branches or windows within conventional banks. | By conventional banks, including those that may also operate Islamic branches or windows. |
| Returns, charges and service | Must be checked in the current product documents and with the provider. | Must be checked in the current product documents and with the provider. |
This comparison describes governing principles, not a guarantee of equal risk-sharing, a particular customer outcome, or that one model is automatically safer. The details of an account or financing arrangement depend on its contract.

What “Islamic banking” means in Bangladesh
An Islamic banking service is not necessarily offered by a separate Islamic-only bank. Bangladesh Bank’s FY2024–2025 Annual Report counted 10 full-fledged Islamic banks with 1,699 branches, alongside 41 Islamic branches at 17 conventional commercial banks and 905 Islamic windows at 21 conventional commercial banks. These are regulator-reported FY25 figures, not a measure of local service quality or current availability at a particular location.
The Institute of Bankers, Bangladesh Shariah-Based Banking syllabus names structures including Al-Wadia, Al-Mudaraba, Mudaraba, Murabaha, Musharaka, Salam and Istisna. This indicates topics included in formal study; it does not mean every bank applies each structure. For a specific deposit or financing product, ask the bank for the contract name and its plain-language explanation. The syllabus is available at Institute of Bankers, Bangladesh; check the current syllabus and availability.

What Bangladesh Bank’s recent figures do—and do not—show
Bangladesh Bank’s Islamic Banking and Finance Statistics, March 2025 reports these sector totals and changes between March 2024 and March 2025:
| Indicator | March 2024 | March 2025 | Change reported for the period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Islamic-bank deposits | BDT 4.19 trillion | BDT 4.39 trillion | 4.61% growth |
| Conventional-bank deposits | BDT 13.69 trillion | BDT 15.12 trillion | 10.44% growth |
| Total banking-system deposits | BDT 17.89 trillion | BDT 19.51 trillion | Approximately 9.07% growth |
| Islamic-bank investment | BDT 4.94 trillion | BDT 5.53 trillion | 12.01% growth |
| Islamic-bank assets | BDT 7.82 trillion | BDT 8.93 trillion | Approximately 14.15% growth |
These are historical sector-level comparisons, not current offers or a like-for-like assessment of individual banks. Bangladesh Bank says conventional banks outperformed Islamic banks in most cases among the indicators it studied for this period. That limited conclusion is not an overall ranking of providers, products, safety or customer satisfaction, and growth figures alone do not establish which bank is a better choice.

What to check before choosing an account or financing product
Compare the actual terms and provider, not only the conventional or Islamic label. Request dated official product documents and verify:
- Contract and calculation: the structure used, how a return or charge is calculated, and whether a stated return is fixed, expected, provisional or variable.
- Costs and access to funds: fees, minimum balance, withdrawal limits, early settlement costs and any late-payment terms.
- Provider disclosures: available Shariah governance information for an Islamic product, alongside the provider’s current audited financial and liquidity disclosures.
- Practical service: branch or window location, digital and remittance services, and customer support where you live.
- Protection arrangements: confirm current deposit-protection coverage and the claim process for the specific account with current regulator information; the sources cited here do not establish coverage for an individual account.
Bangladesh Bank’s FY25 Annual Report identifies weak governance, liquidity crisis, higher non-performing investments, and the need to regain public confidence and continue structural reform as challenges for the Islamic banking sector. This is the central bank’s sector-level assessment for FY25; it does not establish that every Islamic bank has the same condition, nor does it show that conventional banks are risk-free. Use it as context, then assess the disclosures of the specific provider.
