iScanner: a wider toolbox inside one mobile app
iScanner combines automatic cropping and correction with OCR, signing, editing and file management. Its site also describes math, count and area modes, features aimed at calculations, estimating quantities and measuring spaces rather than simply photographing pages. Enhancement controls and other specialized tools are part of the broader package, although the free-versus-Pro matrix determines which ones are available without payment.

For occasional users, the deciding question is often whether a document must leave the phone. Someone who scans a page, searches its text and shares it may fit Adobe Scan’s free workflow. Someone who needs to export repeatedly, run OCR inside iScanner or use its specialized modes should treat the free tier as a trial rather than assume it is a complete replacement for Pro.
How capture and OCR differ in practice
Adobe Scan workflow
- Open Scan and use the phone camera to frame the document, receipt, form or other supported subject.
- Let automatic boundary detection identify the page; review the perspective and text-clarity adjustments before saving.
- Capture additional pages for a multi-page document, then save the result as a scan.
- Use OCR when you need searchable or editable text, and share the resulting PDF or JPEG-related output.
- Move the file into Acrobat when you need operations that Scan does not provide, such as combining files, converting formats, protecting a PDF with a password or performing advanced edits.
The exact control names and placement can change with the current iOS or Android release. The stable product distinction is that OCR and sharing are part of Scan, while the more advanced PDF toolset belongs to Acrobat.

- Open the scanner camera and capture one or more pages.
- Use automatic cropping and correction, then apply any available enhancement or editing controls.
- Save the document in the app’s file-management area and sign it there when your plan includes signing.
- Run OCR when your account has that capability; the official FAQ excludes it from the free tier.
- Export, synchronize or manage the file through the browser version according to your account and plan.
Because iScanner places more functions in the same app, it can reduce handoffs between a scanner and a separate PDF editor. That convenience is valuable only if the functions you need are included in your plan.
What OCR support means for your choice
OCR is not just a checkbox. It matters when you need to search a long PDF, copy a paragraph from a receipt or form, or edit text after capture. Adobe includes OCR in the Scan description. iScanner advertises OCR as a product capability but identifies it as unavailable in free use, so a user comparing no-cost workflows should not count on iScanner OCR without checking the current offer.

When Adobe’s handoff is an advantage
Acrobat’s desktop, web and mobile presence is useful when a scan is only the first step in a larger process. The support material also says synchronization can be paused or disabled. That gives you a choice between convenience and keeping files confined to the device. If you use the browser version or backup, plan for an internet connection and review which files are being synchronized.

Adobe’s Acrobat-centered access
Adobe says saved scans can be accessed in Acrobat on desktop, web and mobile. The advantage is continuity across the Acrobat ecosystem rather than a separate scanner-only browser portal. The reviewed material does not define every offline behavior of Scan, so do not assume that a cloud-dependent action will work without connectivity.
Privacy and security controls to inspect
Neither product can be declared safer from the available documentation. The useful comparison is which controls exist and which settings you are willing to use.

The store listing says documents are stored locally by default. It also describes PIN or biometric app locking, password-protected PDFs and expiring share links. These controls can reduce accidental access, but a password-protected PDF and an expiring link still depend on how you distribute the file.
Adobe information and account settings
Adobe’s Privacy Center provides its privacy policy and general information about collection and use of information. That general material does not answer every Scan-specific data-handling question. Before scanning tax records, identity documents or medical paperwork, inspect the current app privacy disclosures, sign-in settings, cloud choices and sharing controls.

- Decide whether the document needs cloud backup or can remain local.
- Check whether synchronization is enabled and which account receives the files.
- Use PDF passwords or app locks where the document’s sensitivity warrants them.
- Review share-link expiry and recipient permissions before sending a file.
- Delete temporary captures and old exports from both the app and any connected cloud location.
Prices, subscriptions and changing entitlements
The reviewed official pages establish free and paid capabilities but do not provide a comparable current US price for both apps. You scan occasionally and want searchable text
Start with Adobe Scan. Its documented free workflow combines camera capture, OCR and sharing, and it gives you a clear route into Acrobat if a later PDF task becomes more demanding. Before relying on it for a large archive, check the current Acrobat requirements for the actions you need after capture.
You need OCR but do not want a subscription
