What “classic mini-player” means
In this report, “classic” means the earlier YouTube mobile-app layout: a small video window positioned above the app’s bottom navigation bar. The redesigned mobile version was described as a floating player that could be moved between screen corners. Android Authority reported on November 14, 2024, that some users said the earlier layout had returned after YouTube app version 19.45.36. Why your mini-player may look different—or be missing
YouTube’s reviewed official Help instructions cover the desktop miniplayer, not the mobile layout change. The sources do not establish a universal setting or workaround to restore the classic mobile design. They also do not verify how availability varies by account, app version, operating system, or region. So a different layout on your phone—or no mini-player—does not by itself confirm a platform-wide change. The question “Does anybody know why the mini player is suddenly gone?” appeared in a Reddit post, but one post is not evidence of how widespread the issue is.

What YouTube’s desktop miniplayer does
The desktop miniplayer is a separate feature from the mobile app layouts discussed above. According to YouTube Help, it keeps a video playing while you browse YouTube. To open it, right-click the video and choose Miniplayer. From there, you can pause or play, choose another video from Home, drag the player to any of the four corners, resize or dismiss it, or expand back to the watch page. YouTube Help says desktop miniplayer is unavailable for Shorts and videos marked made for kids.
What viewers have said about the redesign
In an embedded Android Authority poll in 2024, 839 respondents voted: 75% preferred the old or classic version, and 25% preferred the redesigned floating PiP version. That was a self-selected poll hosted by the publication, not a representative survey of YouTube users, so it reflects those respondents rather than YouTube viewers overall.
