Is Your USB Stick Bootable? How to Test It on Your PC

The dependable bootability test is to start the target computer from the USB and confirm that the intended environment opens. A visible drive or partition is not proof.

The reliable way to check whether a USB stick is bootable is to start the computer from it and see whether it opens the intended installer, recovery tool, diagnostic program, or live operating system. A drive appearing in File Explorer or a partition list does not prove it can boot—and a successful test on one computer does not guarantee it will work on another.

Test the USB stick on the computer where you need it

  1. Identify the expected result. Know whether the stick should start an operating-system installer, a live operating system, recovery media, or a diagnostic environment. This gives you a clear way to recognize a successful boot.
  2. Insert the stick and restart the target computer. Open its one-time boot menu using the key or method documented for that manufacturer and model. There is no universal boot-menu key; Microsoft advises checking with the PC manufacturer if you do not know it (Microsoft’s USB boot instructions; ASUS boot options guidance).
  3. Select the USB entry. If the menu shows both a plain USB entry and one prefixed with UEFI:, they may start the same stick in different firmware modes. Choose the mode supported by both the computer and the media. Microsoft explains the distinction between UEFI and legacy BIOS boot modes in its boot-mode guidance.
  4. Check what appears. If the expected environment opens, the stick has booted successfully on this computer using the selected mode and settings. Microsoft’s Windows PE instructions similarly direct users to select the bootable media from the boot menu (WinPE: Create bootable media).

If the computer reports that no boot device is available or returns to its internal drive, the test has not succeeded. That result alone does not prove the stick is defective.

What the test proves—and what it does not

A successful boot confirms that the particular stick can start the observed environment on the tested computer, with the selected firmware mode and settings. It does not show that the media will work on every computer, with another mode or Secure Boot configuration, or after the stick has been changed.

A failed attempt is also not conclusive proof of physical failure. The computer may have USB boot disabled, the media may not support the selected firmware mode, or the image may have been written incorrectly. A normal file listing in Windows, macOS, or a partition utility is not a universal bootability test: boot media can use layouts or filesystems that are not presented as ordinary data volumes.

If the USB does not appear in the boot menu

  • Check firmware settings. Confirm that the computer supports USB boot and that it is enabled. The location and names of these options vary by device; see the manufacturer’s instructions, such as ASUS’s boot-options guide.
  • Match the firmware mode. Check whether the media was prepared for UEFI, legacy BIOS, or both. If the menu provides separate entries for the stick, try the supported mode that matches the media (Microsoft’s UEFI and BIOS explanation).
  • Use a documented UEFI fallback where applicable. For supported UEFI systems running Windows PE media, Microsoft documents manually selecting EFIBOOTBOOTX64.EFI if the media does not appear in the boot menu (WinPE boot instructions).
  • Verify how the image was written. Make sure the writing process completed and that you selected the USB stick—not another disk. Ubuntu’s instructions cover creating installation media and warn users to select the correct device (Create a bootable USB stick).

If the USB appears but will not start

  • Try another listed mode only when it is supported. A UEFI or legacy BIOS entry is a compatibility option, not a general quality setting. The media and computer must support the mode you choose (Microsoft’s boot-mode guidance).
  • Check the operating system’s Secure Boot instructions. Do not assume Secure Boot must always be disabled. Microsoft’s direction to disable it applies to its specific Factory OS workflow, which also specifies UEFI and, when using the default device layout, a USB 3.0 stick with at least 32 GB (Microsoft Factory OS instructions). Those requirements are not a general minimum for bootable USB drives.
  • Use creation settings for the specific image. For Ubuntu media created with Rufus, Ubuntu’s version 24.04 documentation suggests trying GPT and UEFI (non CSM) if the stick fails to boot. This is a targeted suggestion, not a universal setting for other images or computers (Ubuntu 24.04 bootable USB instructions).
  • Check processor architecture and platform support. Media intended for one hardware architecture may not boot on another. Ubuntu documents a different support path for Apple Silicon Macs than for Intel Macs and PC hardware (Ubuntu’s USB creation guidance).

When to recreate the boot media

If the settings and compatibility checks do not resolve the problem, recreate the stick using the current instructions for the operating system or tool you need. Ubuntu documents image writing with GNOME Disks and other methods (Ubuntu’s creation guide); Rufus describes creating bootable flash drives from bootable ISO images (Rufus). A creation tool can write media, but using it does not establish that the resulting stick will boot every target computer. Take care to select the USB device because writing an image can overwrite the selected disk.

Replace the stick only if it is damaged, unreliable, unavailable, or unsuitable for the particular image. Capacity and interface needs depend on the workflow: the 32 GB requirement cited above belongs to Microsoft Factory OS’s default layout, not to bootable USB media in general.

How to interpret two different boot attempts

If a stick works on one machine but not another, compare the conditions rather than assuming either result is wrong:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Was each computer set to boot in UEFI or legacy BIOS mode, and does the media support that mode?
  • Does each computer allow USB boot, and are its Secure Boot settings compatible with the intended media?
  • Are both computers compatible with the media’s processor architecture?
  • Was the expected installer, live system, recovery tool, or diagnostic image written correctly to the stick?
  • Does the specific operating-system workflow require a particular capacity or USB interface?

Bootability is therefore specific to the combination of media, target computer, firmware mode, and settings—not a permanent property that a file or partition listing can confirm.
