Is Your Smart Home Leaking Data? 5 Easy Ways to Secure Your Connected Devices

A smart home can expose information through a weak router, reused account passwords, remote camera access, or privacy settings you never reviewed. Here is how to tell ordinary data collection from unauthorized access, and five steps to tighten both.

A smart home can expose information in four main ways: a weak router, a device or cloud account still using a factory or reused password, a camera that people you did not authorize can view remotely, or a privacy setting that lets a product collect more than you meant it to. Those are pathways, not proof that anything has been compromised. Some data collection is simply how a product works, so the first job is telling the two apart, then closing the routes that let unauthorized people in.

Unauthorized access or ordinary data collection?

The distinction matters because the fixes differ. Ordinary collection is governed by settings you can review and change inside the product or its app. Unauthorized access means someone reached a device or account through a route you did not open, and the first response is to close that route. The table below is a rough triage aid, not a forensic test of your home.

What you notice What it usually means First action
A voice assistant keeps recordings or history you did not expect Ordinary collection under the product’s current settings Review recording, history and retention controls in the manufacturer’s app
A smart TV has tracking or viewing-data options switched on Ordinary collection configured by default Review the TV’s privacy and tracking menus; remove apps you do not use
An unfamiliar device appears in the router’s connected-device list Possible unauthorized access, or a guest device you have forgotten Confirm the device, change the Wi-Fi password, and remove anything unidentified
A camera stream is viewed by an account you do not recognize, or you receive login alerts you did not trigger Possible unauthorized remote access Change the account password, turn on two-factor authentication, remove unknown users, and review access logs if the app provides them
Router settings changed, or you cannot confirm the admin password Possible router compromise Update router firmware, set new admin and Wi-Fi passwords, and reset the router to factory settings if you cannot confirm its configuration

Five steps to secure your connected devices

Work through these in order. The router comes first because most connected devices reach the internet through it.

1. Secure the router

  1. Log in to the router’s admin page or companion app. The address and menu names vary by brand, so check the label on the router or its manual.
  2. Change the administrator password and the Wi-Fi password to unique values, not the defaults printed on the label.
  3. Install router firmware updates through the admin page or app.
  4. Set Wi-Fi security to WPA3 Personal where your router supports it, or WPA2 Personal otherwise. The protocol choice is covered in the router section below.
  5. Confirm the firewall is enabled.
  6. Turn off remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not need them. Some devices depend on UPnP, so check each device’s instructions before turning it off and confirm that it still works afterward.

The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home (page dated August 2022) treats the router as central to privacy in the Internet of Things, which is why it leads this list.

2. Lock down device and cloud accounts

  • Replace factory credentials on every device and its cloud account with unique passwords. A password manager makes this practical.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever the device or account offers it.
  • Remove shared users or access you no longer need.

3. Update and inventory

  • Open the router’s list of connected devices and match every entry to something you own.
  • Install firmware and app updates, and enable automatic updates where the product offers them.
  • Disconnect devices you no longer use. The FTC warns that outdated devices may become weak points. Update support periods differ by manufacturer and can end, so check the vendor’s support information for each device; if updates have stopped, consider replacing it.
  • Disable features you do not use, such as remote management.

4. Review what devices collect and share

  • Smart TVs: Open the privacy or tracking menu (names vary by manufacturer) and turn off tracking and viewing-data options you do not want. Uninstall apps you do not use.
  • Voice assistants: In the manufacturer’s app, review recording history, any option to delete recordings, and retention settings. The FTC notes that these assistants may listen and send recordings to manufacturers, so these controls are where you adjust what is kept.
  • Cameras: Check whether streams are encrypted, review access logs if the app provides them, and confirm exactly who can view or administer the stream.

5. Separate access where practical

  • Put visitors on a guest network so they never need the primary Wi-Fi password.
  • If your router supports it, place cameras and other connected devices on a separate network from computers and printers.
  • Expect partial protection. Separation limits some paths between devices but does not guarantee privacy or security. Check your router and camera manuals for the exact setting names.

Choosing a router, only if you need one

Replace the router only if your current one cannot offer WPA2 or WPA3 Personal even after its firmware is updated. According to the FTC guidance, WPA3 is the newer protocol and the stronger of the two, WPA2 also encrypts traffic, and WPA and WEP are outdated and insecure. A new router does not secure a smart home by itself; the five steps above still apply after you install it.

Criteria for evaluating a device or router

When you compare products, check these points:

  • WPA2 or WPA3 support, and whether the vendor provides firmware or software updates
  • Unique account credentials and two-factor authentication
  • Encryption and remote-viewing controls
  • Visible sharing permissions and access logs
  • Support for a guest network or separate network

These criteria come from FTC consumer guidance. They are not a tested ranking of products.

What the sources do and do not establish

NIST IR 8425A, Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products (published September 2024), sets out cybersecurity outcomes and requirements for router manufacturers. It is not a consumer review of router models. The FTC guidance is general. No official figure measures how many smart homes leak data, so none is offered here. Neither source guarantees that a particular device is secure or tests an individual home. Menus, update policies and support status change over time, so follow the current instructions from each manufacturer.
