Is Your Smart Home Already Running AI-Written Code? What We Know—and What We Don’t

AI can help generate smart-device firmware, but that does not prove AI-written code is in your home’s devices. Here’s what the evidence does—and does not—show.

Possibly—but there is no public evidence here to show how common AI-written code is in finished smart-home products, let alone whether a particular device uses it. Developers can use AI tools to generate firmware and related software. That is different from a product having AI features, and neither fact proves that AI-generated code made it into the firmware or cloud services you use. You cannot reliably tell from a device’s “smart” or AI-powered features alone.

What does “AI-written code” mean in a smart home?

The phrase can describe several different things. Keeping them separate helps avoid assuming more than the available evidence supports.

  • AI-powered features: A device or cloud service may use an AI model to recognize speech, classify images, or make recommendations. That tells you about what the product does, not how its software was written.
  • AI used during development: A developer may ask a generative tool to produce code, or use software that translates a trained AI model into code for a particular processor.
  • AI-generated code in a finished product: Code produced with AI may be reviewed, changed, tested, and then included in shipped firmware or a cloud service. Evidence that a vendor offers AI coding tools does not establish that this happened in a particular product.

“AI-written” is also not a precise measure of how much code was generated, how much a developer later changed, or what checks it went through.

Can AI tools generate smart-device firmware?

Yes. TuyaOpen IDE documents an AI agent that can take natural-language prompts and generate projects, firmware, and cloud capabilities in a workspace that also supports app development. The documentation lists ESP32-family chips among its supported platforms. That establishes a development capability; it does not identify consumer products using firmware made with the tool. There is a distinct route for generating embedded code from AI models. STMicroelectronics says its ST Edge AI Developer Cloud can convert pretrained AI algorithms into optimized C code for embedding in applications, with generated output evaluated on its products. This is code generation for embedded AI inference; it is not evidence that a generative language model authored the code or that the resulting code ships in consumer smart-home devices. ST Edge AI Developer Cloud

Does that prove AI-written code is already in your devices?

No. The documentation establishes that AI-assisted development is possible, not how often manufacturers use it or which finished products contain code generated that way. The reviewed sources provide no independently verified estimate of the share of shipped smart-home products with generative-AI-authored code. They also do not identify the firmware authorship of any particular device in your home.

A smart-home product can involve multiple software layers: firmware on the device, a mobile app, cloud services, and platform APIs. Google Home’s developer materials describe APIs and AI-enabled developer assistance; Amazon’s Alexa Connect Kit describes managed cloud services and SDKs for connected-device development. These materials help illustrate the layers involved, but neither says that deployed product code was generated by AI. Google Home developer materials; Alexa Connect Kit

Blink Outdoor 4 – Wireless smart security camera, two-year battery life, 1080p HD day and infrared night live view, two-way talk. Sync Module Core included – 3 camera system
  • Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
  • See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.

So the title’s suggestion that AI-written code is probably already running throughout your smart home, or that you cannot avoid it, goes beyond what these sources establish. You may be able to choose products and services with different capabilities, but there is no reliable consumer-facing method documented here for auditing how their code was authored.

What happens before generated code is used in a product?

Generated output is not automatically ready for production. Tuya’s Cobuilder documentation says: “AI-generated outputs are not automatically production-validated.” It advises hardware adaptation, functional testing, safety checks, and compliance work before mass production. Tuya Cobuilder

NXP Semiconductors makes the reliability caveat explicit in its application note, How to Leverage Generative AI to Accelerate Software Development, Rev. 1.0, dated November 5, 2025: “AI-generated code cannot guarantee compilation success or functional correctness.” The note calls for human review and validation, particularly where hardware constraints matter. Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100 | Motion Detection, 2-Way Audio, Siren, Night Vision, Cloud & SD Card Storage, Works w/Alexa & Google Home
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

These warnings explain why the existence of a code-generation tool is not proof that its output was shipped unchanged—or shipped at all. They also do not establish what review any particular manufacturer performed on a particular product.

Why can’t consumers simply check?

Product packaging or a feature list may describe what a device does, but that does not disclose who or what authored its code. Firmware may also be only one part of the system; app and cloud components can contribute to the experience without running on the device itself.

A 2022 study by Vijay Prakash, Sicheng Xie, and Danny Yuxing Huang examined opacity around software components and updates in the devices and observations within its scope. It reported potentially outdated versions of certain components on some IoT devices and slow update rollouts for some devices. The study did not investigate AI authorship, so it cannot be used to estimate how much smart-home code was generated by AI. Study record

The practical limit is straightforward: without a manufacturer’s disclosure or verifiable product-specific evidence, a consumer cannot infer software authorship just because a device is connected, uses AI features, or relies on a major smart-home platform.

What can you do if you prefer to avoid AI-generated code?

There is no documented consumer audit method in these sources, so a strict guarantee may be difficult to verify. You can still ask manufacturers direct questions and weigh the answers when choosing devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ask whether generative AI was used to produce code for the device firmware, its app, or its cloud services. Ask which layer the answer covers.
  • Ask whether generated code was reviewed, tested on the target hardware, and checked for safety and compliance before release.
  • Look for a clear commitment about AI use in software development and for product-specific disclosures rather than relying on a general statement that a company uses—or does not use—AI.
  • If the answer is unavailable or vague, treat authorship as unknown rather than assuming either that AI was used or that it was not.

For makers, TuyaOpen IDE’s documented ESP32-family support offers a way to explore AI-assisted embedded development on compatible development hardware. That is a development workflow, not a way to inspect or alter the firmware in a typical consumer smart-home device.
