Is Your Laptop’s LAN Too Slow? How to Find and Fix the Bottleneck

Find out whether slow laptop Ethernet comes from a 100 Mbps link, local file transfers, the cable or router, or your Internet connection.

A slow Ethernet connection can mean three different things: the laptop negotiated only a 100 Mbps link, transfers between devices on your local network are slow, or Internet service is slow even though the Ethernet link is healthy. Check the negotiated link speed first, then compare local and Internet performance to find whether the limit is in the laptop, cable, network equipment, or ISP connection.

First, identify what is slow

“LAN speed” is often used to describe different measurements. The negotiated Ethernet link speed is the connection rate between your laptop and the router, switch, or other device it is plugged into. It is not a measurement of Internet throughput, and it does not guarantee that a local file transfer or an Internet download will run at that rate.

  • Link speed: The rate negotiated by the Ethernet adapter and the device at the other end of the cable.
  • Local transfer speed: The speed of copying files between devices on your home or office network. Storage, device performance, and network equipment can also affect it.
  • Internet speed: The result of a test or download that crosses your router and ISP connection. A good Ethernet link does not ensure the Internet plan or route can deliver the same rate.

If Windows reports a 100 Mbps link on equipment that should support gigabit Ethernet, investigate the physical path and both endpoints before treating an Internet speed test as proof of a bad cable.

Check the Ethernet link speed in Windows

Windows versions and laptop makers can arrange network settings differently. On supported Windows versions, open Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet, select the connected network or its properties, and look for Link speed (Receive/Transmit). Intel’s NUC guidance describes checking it under Windows Network and Internet Settings and Network Properties. The exact labels may vary by device and Windows version. Intel NUC LAN speed guidance

Intel’s Killer Ethernet guidance uses 1.0 Gbps as the expected display for a gigabit connection and explains that 100 Mbps is the negotiated connection rate between the adapter and the connected device. This is product-family guidance, not a universal benchmark for every laptop. Intel: Ethernet Link Speed Capped at 100 Mbps

If the link is stuck at 100 Mbps

A 100 Mbps link on gigabit-capable equipment means at least one part of the connection is not negotiating gigabit. The possible limits include the laptop’s Ethernet adapter, the router or switch port, or the cable and its connections. Check them in this order.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  1. Confirm both endpoints support the desired rate. Check the laptop adapter specifications and the router, switch, or access point port. A gigabit-capable laptop cannot negotiate gigabit with a 100 Mbps port.
  2. Check the connection at both ends. Make sure the cable is seated firmly in the laptop and in a router or switch LAN port, not the modem-facing Internet/WAN port. Microsoft recommends checking the connections and trying another networked device to help isolate Ethernet problems. Microsoft: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows
  3. Try a cable known to work at gigabit. Use one already verified on gigabit equipment if available. Cat 5e is technically capable of gigabit Ethernet; Intel nevertheless recommends Cat 6 or better for reliable gigabit troubleshooting, and its Killer guidance suggests Cat 6 as a practical swap when investigating a 100 Mbps link. A new cable is not necessary if you can test with a known-good one. Intel: troubleshoot gigabit speed issues Intel: 100 Mbps link guidance
  4. Check the adapter’s speed and duplex setting if it is available. For Intel gigabit adapters, Intel recommends Auto Negotiation for Speed & Duplex; the far-end router or switch must also support and negotiate the speed correctly. Do not force a gigabit setting as a universal fix. Intel’s gigabit adapter troubleshooting guidance
  5. Test the laptop on a known gigabit port with a known-good cable. Alternatively, connect another device using the same cable and port. If another device also negotiates at 100 Mbps, focus on the cable or network equipment. If the laptop alone remains at 100 Mbps across a known-good setup, focus on its adapter, driver, or physical port.

If link speed is fine but file transfers are slow

A fast negotiated link does not guarantee fast copies between computers or network storage. If Internet tests look normal but a local transfer is slow, concentrate on the devices and the local network path: compare another transfer, check whether the other device is connected over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and test with another device on the same cable and port. A result that changes with the other endpoint points away from the laptop’s Internet service and toward the local transfer path or endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Ethernet link speed is fine but the Internet is slow

When the negotiated link is as expected, a slow Internet test does not by itself show that the laptop’s Ethernet adapter is the cause. Compare the laptop with another device on the same cable and router port. If both show similar slow Internet results, investigate the router or ISP connection; if the issue follows the laptop, investigate its network adapter and software. The Ethernet link rate and the ISP service rate are separate limits. Intel gigabit troubleshooting Intel NUC LAN guidance

Use a driver update or restart when the checks point there

If the problem follows the laptop, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for an Ethernet driver update. Intel advises using the computer maker’s OEM driver for OEM network adapters and checking for updates. Some device-specific Intel guidance also recommends checking BIOS, so follow the laptop maker’s instructions rather than applying a BIOS update indiscriminately. Restarting a modem or router can be appropriate when the issue affects multiple devices or the network equipment appears unresponsive. It temporarily disconnects other people using the network, so do it when that interruption is acceptable. When a USB Ethernet adapter or new cable makes sense

A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can add a wired port to a laptop without one, or help test whether the built-in Ethernet adapter is the source of a problem. Before buying one, confirm that the adapter’s Ethernet rating and the laptop’s USB interface support the speed you need. Microsoft lists a USB-to-Ethernet adapter as an option for a PC without an Ethernet port and uses one in cross-device troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft Ethernet troubleshooting

Likewise, replace a cable when testing shows it is the weak link, not simply because a speed test was disappointing. A known-good cable is a useful diagnostic; Cat 6 or better is Intel’s recommended choice for reliable gigabit testing.

What to do with the result

  • Several devices have a 100 Mbps link on the same port or cable: Check the shared cable and router or switch port.
  • Only the laptop has a 100 Mbps link in a known-good setup: Check its Ethernet adapter settings, OEM driver, and port; contact the laptop maker if needed.
  • Several devices have the expected link but slow Internet: Check the router and ISP service.
  • Internet works normally but local copies are slow: Investigate the local transfer path and the devices involved.

For further help, contact the laptop maker when the fault follows the laptop, the router or switch maker when the fault follows its port or equipment, and the ISP when multiple devices have a healthy local link but Internet service remains slow.

Windows support note

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11. Network setting names can differ across Windows versions, so consult the laptop maker’s guidance if the path above does not match your screen. Microsoft: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows
