Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA data lake becomes a landfill when people can no longer find, understand, trust, govern, or safely reuse what it holds. Cheap storage and support for many file formats do not make a lake useful on their own. If nobody can say what a dataset means, who owns it, whether it meets quality expectations, how it changes, who may read it, and when it should be kept or deleted, the lake is accumulating waste no matter how much it stores.
The established term for this condition is “data swamp.” The landfill comparison is a helpful picture of the same problem, but it is a metaphor rather than a formal category, so this article uses both words with that distinction in mind.

A quick test: is your lake still usable?
Start with symptoms. Each of the following usually points to a specific gap in discovery, trust, or governance rather than a storage problem.
| Symptom | What it usually means | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Analysts create their own copies of the same table because they cannot tell which one is current | Weak discovery and no clear owner | Does each important dataset have an owner and a description that states its business purpose and source? |
| Nobody can explain why a reported number changed | Missing lineage | Can you trace the table back to its sources and to the transformations applied to it? |
| Teams disagree about whether a table is “fresh” | No documented freshness expectation | Is there a stated update schedule, and does anyone receive an alert when an update is missed? |
| Row counts jump or fall without explanation | Completeness or ingestion problems | Are recent row counts compared with an expected range for that dataset? |
| Nobody knows whether personal or regulated data sits in a folder | Missing classification and access visibility | Is each dataset classified, and can you list who is permitted to read it? |
| Storage grows every quarter and nothing is removed | No retention or purge practice | Is there a written rule for when data is archived, and when it is deleted? |
If several of these checks fail, the lake may still hold valuable data, but people cannot reliably use it. That is the working definition of a landfill used throughout this article.

Why lakes decay
Lakes rarely fail for one reason. Four weaknesses recur, and each one makes the others harder to fix.
Poor discovery and metadata
A catalog without meaningful descriptions, owners, sources, and context leaves users unable to separate useful assets from stale or duplicate ones. Databricks treats catalogs, precise lineage, and high-quality metadata as core parts of lakehouse governance. Its guiding principles state: “Maintain high-quality metadata, which is as important as the data itself for proper use of the data.” (Databricks, Guiding principles, Microsoft Learn: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/databricks/lakehouse-architecture/guiding-principles.)

Metadata also decays. A description that was accurate when a pipeline was built can become misleading after the source system changes, so it needs regular maintenance, not a single pass at launch.

Quality problems and lost trust
Quality has to be checked at several points in a pipeline, not only at the end. AWS recommends setting thresholds, continuously evaluating critical data products, fixing problems at their source rather than downstream, and making quality metrics available to consumers. Once users see unexplained errors, they stop trusting the table, even if the underlying data is sound. The AWS Cloud Adoption Framework data governance guidance sets out these expectations.

Weak lineage and accountability
Without a record of where data came from and how it was transformed, users cannot explain results or judge what a change will affect. Catalog and lineage capabilities are the practical means of recording that provenance. Lineage also answers the accountability question: when a table is wrong, someone must be able to find the upstream step responsible and the owner who can fix it.
Missing access and lifecycle practices
Governance includes knowing who can access data and documenting how it is classified, retained, archived, and purged. AWS’s data governance guidance states: “Ensure that all data management processes are documented and automated.” These are operating decisions. They are part of the data management problem, and they cannot be solved by adjusting a storage setting.

Controls that keep a lake usable
The following controls address the causes above. Apply them first to the datasets that people actually use for decisions, then extend them outward.

- Assign owners and write usable descriptions for important datasets. Each description should state the business purpose, the source system, freshness expectations, sensitivity, and any definitions a reader needs to interpret the columns. Schedule a review so that descriptions keep pace with the data (see Databricks governance best practices).
- Make discovery and lineage part of the platform. A catalog should let people find assets, understand what they mean, and trace transformations and dependencies. Lineage that is captured automatically is more reliable than lineage drawn by hand, because hand-drawn diagrams go stale. The Databricks data and AI governance overview describes these capabilities.
- Define quality expectations inside the pipeline. For each critical dataset, specify the checks, the threshold that counts as a failure, and the person who resolves it. Decide in advance whether a failed check blocks publication or only raises a warning. AWS recommends remediating issues at the source. Databricks describes expectations and monitoring for quality constraints in its data quality monitoring documentation.
- Monitor freshness and completeness separately. Freshness asks whether a table was updated when it should have been. Completeness asks whether the volume of data is what you expect. Databricks describes monitoring expected update timing and comparing recent row counts with expected ranges. A stale table and an unexpectedly small table usually indicate different faults, so alerts should distinguish them. Set thresholds from each dataset’s actual use, because a single global threshold will be wrong for most tables.
- Document access, classification, and audit visibility. Record each dataset’s sensitivity, who holds permissions, and how access is reviewed. If you cannot produce that list for a table, you cannot confidently say the table is governed.
- Set retention, archival, and purge rules. Write down when data moves to cheaper archival storage and when it is deleted. Without this rule, duplicates and abandoned experiments accumulate indefinitely, and the lake grows while its usefulness shrinks.
Architecture helps, but it does not govern
Many lakes are organized into medallion layers: bronze for raw data, silver for cleansed data, and gold for curated data. Google Cloud’s Lakehouse key concepts documentation describes this kind of layered pattern. The structure makes progressive refinement easier to explain, and it gives teams a sensible place to apply checks at each stage.

- 【Plug and Play】 - With no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use.The hard disk chip is wrapped with an aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data.
- 【What You Get】 - 1 x Portable Hard Drive, 1 x USB 3.0 Cable, 1 x User Manual, Gift-type shell packaging ,Three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services.
The layers do not create ownership, quality rules, or accountability on their own. A gold table with no owner, no documented definitions, and no freshness check is still a landfill entry, just a tidier one. Treat the pattern as scaffolding for the controls above, not as a substitute for them.
Comparing catalogs, platforms, and approaches
When you evaluate a catalog, governance platform, or lakehouse approach, compare it on six axes:
- Discovery and metadata quality, including how easily owners and descriptions are maintained
- Lineage and provenance, including whether it is captured automatically
- Quality rules and monitoring, including how failures are surfaced and routed
- Access control and auditability
- Support for your engines, file formats, and storage locations
- The ownership and operating effort needed to keep metadata and rules current
The last axis is the one most often underestimated. A tool can provide every capability and still fail if no one is assigned to maintain it. The official guidance cited in this article identifies these as governance needs; it does not rank products against one another, so a vendor comparison should come from your own testing against these criteria.
What the evidence does and does not establish
- No reliable national or industry figure for how many data lakes have become swamps was found, so this article makes no prevalence claim.
- The guidance quoted here comes from vendor and cloud-provider documentation. It describes recommended practice, not measured outcomes.
- The thresholds, frequencies, and ownership models in any given organization depend on how the data is used, and no single value applies across industries.
