No. Windows Security and Windows Defender are related but not interchangeable. Windows Security is the built-in app on Windows 10 and Windows 11 that shows your security status and holds the controls. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus component that the app manages. “Windows Defender” is an older name, and Microsoft’s own documentation describes the app under a former title, Windows Defender Security Center.
The names, and what each one refers to
Most confusion comes from the fact that one label has been used for several things over the years. Microsoft’s current terminology separates them like this:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Name | What it refers to | Where you encounter it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Security | The built-in Windows 10 and Windows 11 app that presents security status and controls. | Open it from the Start menu. |
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus | Microsoft’s antivirus component for Windows. | Under Virus & threat protection inside Windows Security. |
| Windows Defender Security Center | The former name of the Windows Security app. | Older articles, screenshots and instructions. |
| Microsoft Defender app | A separate app that Microsoft associates with Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions. | Installed or managed through its own Microsoft Defender product pages, not through the built-in app. |
| Windows Defender Firewall (also called Windows Firewall) | The built-in firewall capability. | Managed through the firewall and network protection area of Windows Security. |
The simplest way to hold this in your head: Windows Security is the dashboard, and Microsoft Defender Antivirus is one of the protections it can display and control. The dashboard also covers other areas, so the two names are not synonyms.
What Windows Security covers
Windows Security is broader than antivirus. Microsoft’s overview of the app lists these areas:
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Virus & threat protection, where Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans and settings live.
- Firewall & network protection, which controls network traffic.
- App & browser control, covering reputation-based protection settings.
- Device security, which shows built-in hardware and OS protections.
- Protection history, a log of actions the security features have taken.
If you are looking for a firewall setting, you are in a different part of the same app from the antivirus scanner. Treating “Windows Defender” as one thing hides that difference.
Where Microsoft Defender Antivirus fits
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the malware scanning engine built into Windows. It is not a separate download for most Windows users. You reach it by opening Windows Security and selecting Virus & threat protection, where you can run scans and review its settings. Microsoft’s guidance on scanning a specific file or folder with Windows Security uses the same location.

The separate Microsoft Defender app
Microsoft also publishes a Microsoft Defender app that it associates with Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal. Microsoft explicitly distinguishes this app from the antivirus built into Windows, so installing or using it does not rename or replace the protection described above. If you do not have one of those Microsoft 365 plans, you can disregard it when reading instructions about Windows Security. Microsoft’s installation page for the app is the place to confirm what it requires.
Why the old name still causes problems
Older guides often tell you to open “Windows Defender” or “Windows Defender Security Center.” On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, the app you want is Windows Security. When a set of instructions refers to the old name, the menu items it describes may be in the same app but labelled differently, so match the function rather than the title.

Checking whether protection is active
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Read the status and the security provider information shown for your device. Windows Security is where Microsoft displays which antivirus product is currently active.
Your screen may differ from another person’s. The exact controls depend on configuration and on which security providers are installed.
What happens when you install another antivirus product
Microsoft’s guidance says that a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus product can become the active provider, and that Microsoft Defender Antivirus can turn off automatically while it is active. Microsoft’s scan guidance also says that Microsoft Defender Antivirus should turn back on after that other product is removed.

Running two active antivirus products at the same time is not something to set up on the assumption that more protection is better. Check the provider shown in Windows Security before changing anything, and use the product’s own uninstall process if you intend to switch back.

Windows Security lets you add exclusions. Microsoft warns that an exclusion stops Microsoft Defender Antivirus from checking the excluded files, folders or processes for threats, which can leave the device and its data exposed. Do not add an exclusion as a quick fix for a slow scan or an error without understanding which item you are exempting and why.

Managed devices and version differences
Microsoft’s overview applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. On an organization-managed device, some features or pages may be unavailable, and an administrator may control settings you would otherwise change yourself. If your screen does not match a description here, the device’s configuration is the most likely reason.
