Is Wi-Fi 6 Compatible With 2.4 GHz Devices?

Yes. A Wi-Fi 6 router can generally connect to older devices that use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, provided the router and device support compatible Wi-Fi modes and settings. Wi-Fi 6 is 802.11ax and works on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; an older device connects using the Wi-Fi standard it supports, rather than gaining Wi-Fi 6 capabilities.

Why older 2.4 GHz devices can connect

Wi-Fi 6 is the common name for 802.11ax, a Wi-Fi generation that can operate on 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz. The Wi-Fi Alliance says in its Wi-Fi 6 Deployment Guidelines and Scenarios that Wi-Fi 6 supports devices on both bands and that older 802.11a/b/g/n/ac devices can coexist with Wi-Fi 6 devices.

That compatibility is not a promise that every device will connect under every configuration. The router must have its 2.4 GHz radio enabled, and the client’s supported Wi-Fi modes and security requirements must work with the router’s settings.

What compatibility does—and does not—mean

An older smart plug, printer, or other Wi-Fi client does not become a Wi-Fi 6 device when it connects to a Wi-Fi 6 router. It continues to use the Wi-Fi standard and capabilities built into the client. The Wi-Fi Alliance specifically cautions that a Wi-Fi 6 access point does not improve the performance or range of legacy 802.11a/b/g/n/ac clients simply by being Wi-Fi 6.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Wi-Fi 6E is a separate extension that adds the 6 GHz band. A client needs Wi-Fi 6E/6 GHz support to use that band; a 2.4 GHz-only device does not need Wi-Fi 6E and can remain on a compatible 2.4 GHz network.

How 2.4 GHz compares with 5 GHz and 6 GHz

Band Compatibility Range and obstacles Speed and congestion
2.4 GHz Used by many older and smart-home devices; Wi-Fi 6 can also operate on it. Typically reaches farther and passes through obstacles better than 5 GHz. Generally offers lower throughput and has fewer non-overlapping channels, so congestion can be greater. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance.
5 GHz Available on Wi-Fi 6 routers; a client must support the band to use it. Typically has less range and poorer wall penetration than 2.4 GHz. Can offer higher throughput, though real-world performance depends on conditions and the client.
6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E) Requires a client that supports Wi-Fi 6E and 6 GHz. Has shorter range than lower bands; permitted channels and availability depend on local rules. Not necessary for 2.4 GHz devices to connect.

What to check if a device will not connect

  1. Check the exact specifications. Confirm that the router supports 2.4 GHz and consult the device manual for its supported bands and Wi-Fi standards. ASUS recommends checking the specifications for the particular product; capabilities can differ between models. See ASUS’s Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E overview.
  2. Make sure 2.4 GHz is enabled. Router settings vary: some routers show one network name (SSID) for multiple bands, while others show a separate name for each. If bands share a name, a device or operating system may select a band automatically. Microsoft describes this behavior in its home Wi-Fi guidance.
  3. Review security and other router settings. The device’s supported security configuration must be compatible with the router’s configuration. Check the device and router documentation for supported options; compatibility is not guaranteed for every combination of older client and settings.
  4. Check channel and regional support. Permitted Wi-Fi channels vary with local rules, and router specifications may differ by region. For channel-related details, consult the model documentation and ASUS’s regional channel guidance.
  5. If it connects but performs poorly, look beyond compatibility. Distance, walls, interference, other clients sharing airtime, and the device’s own capabilities can affect performance. TP-Link lists these as factors in its Wi-Fi speed troubleshooting guidance. A slow connection alone does not establish that the device is defective.

Do you need a new router?

No—not solely because a device uses 2.4 GHz. If your current router provides a compatible 2.4 GHz network and the device connects successfully, compatibility does not require an upgrade. If you are already replacing a router, check the exact model’s band support and the requirements of your devices; Wi-Fi 6 is not itself a reason to expect faster performance from an older client.
