What it costs to run depends on where you schedule it, how often it runs, and whether your chosen notification services or optional features have separate costs. What is free, and what might cost money?
urlwatch checks configured jobs for changes, compares each run with the previous result, and can notify you when it finds a difference. Its reports can include the changed URL and a unified diff. You install and run the software yourself; the project’s quick start describes scheduling it rather than buying a urlwatch subscription.

What affects the cost of a self-hosted setup?
Where and how reliably it runs
The quick start shows scheduled execution with cron and notes that Windows users can use Task Scheduler. A machine that is off or disconnected when a run is due cannot perform that check then; an always-available server may be useful if you need scheduled monitoring around the clock. The project does not set a hardware requirement or hosting price.

How often checks run
The schedule determines how frequently urlwatch checks. The handbook recommends not running it more often than every 30 minutes. That is project guidance, not a billing rate or promise about how quickly a change will be detected.
Which notifications you configure
The handbook lists terminal output, email, Slack, Discord, Pushbullet, Telegram, Matrix, Pushover, XMPP, shell, and other reporters. Email can be configured using options including Amazon SES. Check the terms and pricing of whichever external service you select; a fee charged by that service is separate from urlwatch itself.

Whether you need optional features
The dependency documentation separates mandatory packages from additions that may be needed for browser jobs, particular reporters, PDF text extraction, OCR, or JSON jq filtering. If you only need basic checks, do not assume every optional package is necessary. Consult the current dependency list for the feature you intend to use.
How to install it and plan the first run
The current installation instructions use Python’s pip. The handbook identifies Python 3.9 or newer and lists PyYAML, minidb, requests, keyring, platformdirs, lxml, and cssselect among mandatory dependencies. Since versions and requirements can change, use the project’s current handbook and dependency page rather than treating this list as permanent.

- Install: run
python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatchin the Python environment where you intend to run it. - Configure jobs and reports: follow the handbook’s configuration instructions for the pages or commands to monitor and the reporter you want to use.
- Run it on a schedule: use cron on a suitable Unix-like system or Task Scheduler on Windows, following the handbook’s quick start. Keep the schedule at or above the project’s recommended 30-minute interval.
- Check external costs: confirm whether your server, notification provider, or optional packages carry charges under your setup.
Installation is only one part of operating a monitor: the scheduled machine must be available, and configured reporters must be able to deliver messages. The documentation does not publish a representative all-in monthly estimate, so calculate from the prices of the specific infrastructure and services you use.
urlwatch is not URLWatch.io
URLWatch.io is a separate hosted monitoring service that advertises its own paid plans. Its subscription prices are not urlwatch project fees, and its service limits or features should not be attributed to the thp/urlwatch software. Compare the products by what you need—self-managed scheduling and configuration versus a hosted service, including its own plan terms—rather than treating their names as evidence that they are the same product.
