UPI is designed to authorize bank-account payments, but it cannot stop every scam. The biggest practical risk is being tricked into approving a payment, sharing your UPI PIN, trusting a fake link or QR code, or installing an unknown app. Before entering your PIN, confirm that you intended to pay, and check the recipient and amount shown in your app.
How UPI authorization works—and what “safe” means
UPI is an instant payment system that enables transfers between bank accounts. A UPI PIN is a 4–6 digit passcode used to authorize transactions, according to the NPCI UPI FAQ. That authorization step is important, but it does not make every request legitimate: a scammer may try to persuade you to authorize a payment yourself.

NPCI’s guidance is explicit: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” It also says your bank’s customer support will never ask for it. A PIN request should be treated as an authorization to pay, not as proof that a caller, message, link, or offer is genuine.
Check these five things before entering your PIN
- Did you start this action? Be cautious if a payment request, reward, or demand arrived unexpectedly.
- Does the screen say pay or send? If so, you are authorizing a payment, not collecting money.
- Is the recipient correct? Verify the payee name displayed in the app; do not rely only on a name or QR code supplied by a stranger.
- Is the amount right? Check it before authorizing, including when the payment is described as a fee, refund, or verification.
- Is the app asking for your PIN? Enter it only when you intend to authorize the payment shown on screen. Never disclose it to a person.
The Government of India’s Financial Transactions: Safe Practices manual states: “UPI PIN is not needed while receiving payments”. It also advises verifying the payee name or QR code and protecting the device and payment app with a strong passcode.

Common UPI scams and how to respond
QR codes and links promising a reward
A QR code or link described as a cashback, prize, refund, or payment collection method can lead you to authorize a payment. NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance warns that scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is a way to pay, not receive money. Don’t enter your PIN to claim a reward; verify any payment request in your app and check the recipient and amount.
Fake support and search-result impersonation
Fraudsters may impersonate a bank, payment service, or customer-support team through search listings, social media, grievance posts, calls, or messages. Don’t share your PIN, follow payment instructions, or call a number supplied in an unsolicited contact. Find the bank’s contact route through its official app or website.

Threats, investment offers, and unknown apps
NPCI also identifies threatening SMS or chat messages, fake investment schemes, and unknown app downloads among fraud patterns. Pause if someone pressures you to act quickly or asks you to install an app to resolve a payment problem. Use your bank’s official app and support channels rather than software or instructions from an unsolicited contact.

Can an unexpected deposit notification or opening the app take money?
NPCI’s clarification dated January 13, 2025 says: “Simply opening a UPI or bank application does not automatically approve a transaction.” It says the user must navigate to a payment request, explicitly select “pay,” and authorize it with a UPI PIN. NPCI also explains that an incoming payment notification and a separate payment or withdrawal are distinct transactions. This clarification describes the authorization flow; it is not a guarantee that every scam scenario is impossible.

If you see an unexpected deposit notification, don’t follow a stranger’s instructions to return it by scanning a QR code or entering your PIN. Check the actual account and transaction details in your bank or UPI app. If a transaction appears unauthorized, contact your bank.
What to do if your phone is lost
Act promptly rather than waiting to see whether a transaction occurs. NPCI’s UPI FAQ advises contacting your bank and blocking the mobile number linked to UPI after phone loss. Follow the bank’s instructions for securing the account and device. A strong device and app passcode can help protect access, as recommended by the Government of India safety manual.

What to do about a pending, failed, or unauthorized payment
Pending or failed transaction
Pending means payment confirmation has not arrived; it is not the same as a confirmed successful payment. Check the status in your app and whether your account was debited. NPCI’s UPI HELP guidelines describe pending and failed statuses and direct users to the participating bank’s UPI app for status checks and complaints. A technical failure may result in a debit that should be returned, but timing can vary; follow the status and instructions shown by your app or bank rather than assuming a fixed refund time.

Contact your bank promptly. NPCI’s complaint page says complaints about fraudulent or unauthorized transactions should be raised with the customer’s bank; its UPI HELP guidance likewise directs users to their bank for suspected fraud. Keep the transaction details and reference number available when you report it.
