Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNeither upgrade is best for every older PC: add RAM when memory pressure is slowing the work you do, and replace a hard disk drive (HDD) with a solid-state drive (SSD) when slow drive access is the bottleneck. Check what the computer is doing before spending money—high memory or disk use is a clue, not a diagnosis.
What each upgrade can—and cannot—fix
More RAM helps when memory is the constraint
RAM holds the apps and files a computer is actively using. If memory is consistently near capacity during the tasks that feel slow, adding supported RAM may help the PC handle more at once. It does not replace a slow hard disk or fix every cause of sluggishness. Microsoft explains the role of memory in its computer memory guide.

An SSD helps when the PC still runs from an HDD
An HDD-to-SSD replacement targets slow access to the operating system, apps, and files. Kingston describes this as an upgrade option for PCs and laptops, but its guidance is vendor advice rather than a head-to-head benchmark. If the computer already has an SSD, replacing it is not automatically useful; identify a specific drive problem first. See Kingston’s SSD and memory upgrade guidance.
Diagnose the slowdown before choosing
- Reproduce the problem. Open the apps or files involved and do the task that feels slow.
- Check resource use. In Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and review CPU, Memory, and Disk use while the slowdown is happening. Microsoft identifies consistently high use as a reason to investigate, not proof that a particular part must be replaced. Its guide to recognizing when a PC may be due for replacement discusses these symptoms.
- Identify the system drive. Check whether Windows is installed on a spinning HDD or an SSD. The HDD-to-SSD case is the one where an SSD replacement is most directly relevant.
- Look for the process causing the load. A busy app, background task, or startup program can drive high readings. Microsoft lists background and startup apps, outdated software, low storage, and hardware limits among possible causes in its Windows performance troubleshooting guide.
Use the pattern as a guide: sustained high Memory use while multitasking points toward checking RAM capacity; sustained Disk activity on an HDD makes an SSD more relevant. A single high reading does not establish the cause, and CPU limits or software problems may remain after either upgrade.

Check free space separately from drive speed
A nearly full drive and a slow drive are different issues. If storage space is the problem, first review Windows cleanup options, including Storage Sense and recommendations, in Microsoft’s free-space guidance. Cleanup may address capacity without replacing the drive; it does not turn an HDD into an SSD.
Verify the upgrade fits your PC
For RAM
- Find the exact computer or motherboard model and confirm the supported RAM type and maximum capacity.
- Check whether memory is replaceable. Some laptops have memory soldered to the board and cannot take a RAM upgrade.
- Base capacity on your actual workload, not a promise of speed. Microsoft broadly suggests at least 4 GB for light browsing, documents, or streaming, recommends 8 GB for longer-term use, and says 16 GB or more may suit editing or demanding projects. These are general recommendations, not guaranteed upgrade outcomes or compatibility advice.
For an SSD
- Confirm the interface and form factor the computer supports—for example, SATA or M.2/NVMe. An M.2 slot does not by itself establish which drive types it accepts.
- Check the computer maker’s specifications or a compatibility lookup, such as Kingston’s. Without the exact PC model, no specific part can be confirmed.
- Back up important files before migrating Windows or replacing the system drive.
Consider whether either upgrade is worthwhile
Older hardware may have limits beyond storage and memory, and software troubleshooting may not produce a substantial improvement on a machine with broader hardware constraints. If Windows 11 eligibility matters, check the full requirements rather than assuming a RAM or storage upgrade is enough: Microsoft lists RAM and storage minimums alongside compatible-processor and TPM requirements in its Windows 11 compatibility guidance. The listed minimums do not guarantee good performance or establish that a particular PC qualifies.
