Is Traditional LC Obsolete for 1.6T Data Centers?

MPO-16 and VSFF connectors are options for some 1.6T designs, not proof that data centers are abandoning LC. Connector choice depends on the module, fiber, reach, and installed cabling.

No—not across the board. MPO-16 is one documented connector option for a 1.6T parallel-optics transceiver, while small-form-factor VSFF connectors such as SN and MDC are candidates for some designs where density matters. Neither fact means data centers are universally replacing LC. The right choice depends on the specific transceiver, fiber configuration, reach, and cabling already installed.

What do MPO-16 and VSFF mean for 1.6T?

MPO-16: one documented transceiver interface

An Amphenol demonstration product listing hosted by OIF describes the OP13LI8-005D as a 1.6T OSFP DR8 module for links up to 500 m over single-mode fiber, with an “MPO-16 optical receptacle.” The listing specifies 212.5 Gb/s per channel and typical power dissipation of 9.5 W. Those are specifications for this particular demonstrated product, not universal figures for 1.6T optics. Read the OIF-hosted Amphenol demonstration.

VSFF: a category, not one connector

VSFF means very small form factor. CommScope’s 2024 data-center guide identifies SN and MDC as VSFF connector candidates for some transceivers. These are alternatives to consider in particular applications, not a single connector standard that automatically replaces LC or MPO-16. A smaller connector may be useful where density is a priority, but it still must match the module and link design. See CommScope’s 2024 guide.

Is traditional LC obsolete?

The available examples do not establish that LC is obsolete across data centers. They show that 1.6T designs can use different optical arrangements and interfaces, and that MPO-16 and VSFF options are part of that discussion. A connector’s suitability follows from the transceiver’s receptacle and optical link—not from the headline speed alone.

Likewise, the evidence does not show how quickly operators are migrating away from LC, what share of installed links use each connector, or which option has the lowest total cost. The 2024 CommScope guide discusses emerging designs; a product demonstration establishes one example, not market-wide adoption.

What connector does a 1.6T transceiver use?

There is no single answer in the examples below. CommScope’s 2024 guide describes several 1.6T link types with different fiber types, counts, and reaches. The Amphenol demonstration supplies a specific MPO-16 example. The listed reach figures describe those product or design examples, not a guarantee for every module bearing the same speed label.

Does 1.6T mean a finished standard or universal deployment?

No. IEEE lists P802.3dv as an active project approved on 2026-09-25. Its scope includes 400G, 800G, and 1.6T using 400G-per-lane signaling and single-mode optical reaches up to 500 m. An active project and its scope are not the same as a completed amendment, nor do they show that 1.6T has become universal in operating data centers. Check IEEE’s P802.3dv project page.

MPO-16 vs LC: how to choose for an upgrade

Do not choose a patch cable from the data rate or connector name alone. Start with the actual transceiver and the intended link, then compare the cabling requirement with what is installed. For a new build, this can be specified as part of the link design; for an upgrade, existing fiber and panel interfaces may constrain the practical options.

  1. Confirm the module. Check the exact transceiver model and its optical receptacle. The documented MPO-16 interface applies to the named Amphenol demonstration product, not every 1.6T module.
  2. Match connector details. Verify connector gender and keying, as well as any required interface at the panel or far end. A connector family label alone is not enough to establish a mating connection.
  3. Check fiber type and count. Confirm whether the link calls for single-mode or multimode fiber and how many fibers it uses. The 1.6T examples differ on both dimensions.
  4. Verify the supported reach. Match the module’s stated reach to the link distance and fiber specification; do not treat a figure from another design as interchangeable.
  5. Confirm polarity and the full cabling path. Check the cable assembly and any intermediate trunks or panels against the equipment documentation and cabling plan.
  6. Account for the installation goal. In a new build, compare density and routing needs with the chosen optical design. In an existing installation, establish whether current cabling can be reused or requires compatible assemblies and changes.

SNIA describes the purpose of SFF Technical Working Group specifications this way: “These technical specifications enable technology vendors to procure compatible, multi-sourced products and solutions.” That is a useful reminder that compatibility matters as much as connector size. Do I need MPO-16 for 1.6T?

Only if the specific transceiver and link design call for it. MPO-16 is documented for one 1.6T DR8 product example, but the 1.6T designs discussed by CommScope do not all have a connector specified in the cited descriptions, and it names SN and MDC as candidates for some transceivers. Obtain the module’s cabling specification before ordering; a generic fiber-optic cable or an MPO-16 assembly is not automatically compatible.
