Approve an MCP server for production only when the specific server, client, configuration, and deployment under review pass applicable security gates and meet locally defined service objectives. The MCP protocol alone does not establish that a deployment is safe. Risk depends on what its tools can access or change, who can invoke them, and where the server runs. This rubric is a review aid, not an official certification or a guarantee of safety.
How to use this go/no-go rubric
Review the exact production candidate—not a demo, a protocol label, or a different configuration. For each applicable control, record the evidence, result, accountable owner, and any remediation. Treat the security and ownership controls as gates; set workload-specific thresholds for service quality rather than relying on a universal score.

- Identify the server build and configuration, client versions, transport, hosting environment, and intended production scope.
- Work through the six gates below. Mark controls that do not apply and explain why.
- Record evidence for every pass or exception, assign an owner to each risk, and set a remediation date where needed.
- Approve only when applicable hard security gates pass, any accepted exceptions have an accountable owner and explicit expiry, and service thresholds and rollback ownership are defined.
If a high-impact tool lacks a verified authorization boundary or a safe failure response, keep it out of production until that gap is fixed.
Gate 1: What authority and blast radius does the server have?
Inventory exposed capabilities and effects
- List every tool, resource, prompt, and other capability the server exposes. Mark each as read-only, write-capable, destructive, or administrative.
- For each capability, identify the data it can reach, the upstream systems it touches, and the identity under which its calls execute.
- Remove capabilities the production use case does not need, then test the least-privilege configuration that remains.
Protocol conformance does not by itself approve a tool’s business authority. Review what a caller can actually cause the deployment to do.

Gate 2: Are identity and authorization enforced at the right boundaries?
Start with the transport
MCP authorization is optional at the protocol level. The authorization specification dated July 28, 2026 applies to HTTP-based transports; its HTTP authorization flow is not for STDIO implementations, which should obtain credentials from the environment. Evaluate the controls appropriate to the transport this deployment actually uses.
Validate client and upstream credentials separately
- For a protected HTTP server, verify token signature and issuer, check expiry as appropriate, and verify that the token is intended for this server through audience or resource validation. Reject tokens issued for another service.
- Do not pass a token received from an MCP client through to an upstream API as a substitute for separate authorization. Use credentials and permissions appropriate to the upstream call.
- Prefer well-tested authorization libraries, short-lived tokens, secure token storage, least-privilege scopes, and controlled dynamic client registration.
- Make authentication and authorization decisions attributable to an identity, with audit records that do not expose credentials.
Gate 3: Can tool inputs or outputs cause unsafe execution or data exposure?
Trace untrusted input to its effects
- Follow tool arguments through validation and into database queries, file access, HTTP requests, and process execution. Check that validation is appropriate to each operation.
- Reject arbitrary shell or dynamic code execution. If a tool must invoke a command, use a strict allowlist and do not let attacker-controlled text be interpreted by a shell.
- Bound request size, execution time, concurrency, outbound calls, and per-user or per-IP request rates. Set outbound timeouts and rate limits.
Inspect what leaves the server
- Check returned content for sensitive data and error responses for internal details that should not reach callers.
- Redact authorization headers, cookies, API keys, codes, and secrets from logs.
Gate 4: Is the network boundary suitable for production exposure?
- For network-exposed deployments, require authenticated endpoints and HTTPS in production.
- For browser-facing or cross-origin paths, use explicit origin allowlists. Avoid wildcard CORS on authenticated endpoints and do not reflect arbitrary origins.
- Restrict ingress to intended clients and egress to necessary upstreams. In Kubernetes, inspect the effective NetworkPolicy and gateway behavior rather than assuming permissive defaults are adequate.
- Where relevant, review DNS resolution, TLS certificates, redirect handling, and OAuth metadata fetching for SSRF and unsafe-URL risks.
Gate 5: Is the runtime and hosting layer hardened?
Verify deployment controls
- Record image and build provenance, runtime identity, filesystem and capability restrictions, secret-injection method, and who owns patching and updates.
- Keep runtime privileges minimal, constrain namespaces and service accounts, and restrict access to monitoring endpoints.
- For Kubernetes operator deployments, review TLS policy, network isolation, gateway exposure, availability, storage migrations, and CPU and memory sizing. Load-test at the intended scale instead of copying example limits.
The Kubernetes SIG MCP Lifecycle Operator guidance addresses ingress and egress restriction, TLS posture, metrics access, hardening, availability, and resource sizing. Its defaults are intentionally permissive in some areas, so review the effective configuration for the production environment.

Distinguish examples from production products
The official MCP servers repository describes its reference implementations as educational examples, not production-ready servers. Treat reference implementations and quickstarts as examples to adapt, not evidence that a particular deployment is ready.

Prove the operational path
- Before launch, provide structured logs, metrics, traces or correlation identifiers, alerts, dashboards, and a named incident owner.
- Exercise failure paths: upstream outage, expired authorization, malformed input, permission denial, overload, restart, and rollback. Record the expected behavior and observed result.
- Keep a compatibility record for the MCP protocol, server, SDK, and clients. OpenTelemetry-compatible trace propagation is described in 2026 release materials as a capability direction; verify that the exact server and SDK versions in the candidate deployment support it.
- Define a staged rollout, a kill switch or access-revocation procedure, rollback steps, and review triggers for changes to tools, scopes, dependencies, protocol, or upstream APIs.
What should the approval record contain?
Use one record for the deployment under review. A pass should point to evidence, not merely an assertion that a control exists.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Control | The specific gate and requirement being assessed. |
| Evidence | The artifact or test result supporting the decision, such as a configuration review, authorization test, load test, or recovery exercise. |
| Result | Pass, fail, or accepted exception, with the production scope covered. |
| Risk owner | The person accountable for an accepted risk or unresolved remediation. |
| Remediation | The corrective action and target date for any failed control or accepted exception. |
| Approval | The decision-maker and approval for the stated production scope. |
Make exceptions explicit and time-bounded. A decision applies to the reviewed combination of server, client, configuration, and deployment; material changes to tools, scopes, dependencies, protocol, or upstream APIs should trigger review.

How should teams compare multiple MCP server candidates?
Compare candidates using evidence from the target environment, not feature count. There is no universal score or weighting in the cited guidance; agree on priorities based on the workload and consequences of failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Comparison area | Evidence to compare |
|---|---|
| Authority and blast radius | Exposed capabilities, read/write/destructive effects, reachable data, upstream systems, and execution identity. |
| Identity and authorization | Authentication and authorization behavior, token audience or resource validation, and separation of client and upstream credentials. |
| Input execution and data handling | Validation, command or code execution controls, resource limits, returned data, error detail, and log redaction. |
| Network and transport | Transport-specific controls, HTTPS, origin handling, ingress and egress restrictions, and relevant URL-fetch protections. |
| Deployment hardening | Build provenance, runtime privileges, secret handling, patch ownership, monitoring access, and resource sizing. |
| Operations and change control | Service objectives, observability, failure testing, rollout, rollback, and named operational ownership. |
| Compatibility | Supported MCP protocol, server, SDK, and client versions for the intended deployment. |
What is the go/no-go decision?
Go only for the reviewed scope when applicable hard security gates pass, exceptions have accountable owners and expiry dates, and the team has defined service objectives, incident ownership, and a tested recovery path. No-go when a required boundary is unverified, a high-impact tool can fail unsafely, or the team cannot operate and roll back the deployment responsibly. Record the decision and revisit it when the deployment or its authority changes.
