Yes. Thermal paste is generally an inexpensive computer-cooling consumable, but there is no universal price that defines “cheap,” and paying more does not automatically mean better cooling. The right choice depends on the material and the requirements of the particular device and cooler.
What thermal paste does—and what it does not replace
Thermal paste is a thermal interface material (TIM). It helps couple a heat-producing component to a heatsink by filling the interface between them. Paste is only one TIM type: pads, putties, phase-change materials and thermal insulators serve different design needs. They are not interchangeable by default. Nordson EFD’s selection guide explains thermal-compound terminology and interface resistance; Honeywell’s TIM overview shows the range of material categories and formulations.

What do the listed prices tell you?
Two manufacturer listings illustrate why a single “typical” price is hard to establish. CORSAIR listed TM30 at $7.99 in the US in the retrieved listing, while ARCTIC lists MX-7 at €20.99 excluding VAT and shipping. These are different products, currencies and retail contexts, not a like-for-like comparison or a market average; ARCTIC’s page includes multiple sizes, so the listed MSRP should not be assumed to apply to every size. Prices can change.
No named, independently published market-wide average is established by these examples. Treat them as snapshots of those specific manufacturer listings, not as a guaranteed price range for thermal paste generally.
#1 Best Overall
- WELL PROVEN QUALITY: The design of our thermal paste packagings has changed several times, the formula of the composition has remained unchanged, so our MX pastes have stood for high quality
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- 100 % ORIGINAL THROUGH AUTHENTICITY CHECK: Through our Authenticity Check, it is possible to verify the authenticity of every single product
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners, Spatula incl.
How to judge value beyond the price tag
A price and an advertised thermal-conductivity figure do not, by themselves, establish which product is the better value. AMD’s DS955 thermal-interface guidance, released January 13, 2025, identifies conductivity alongside spreading, long-term stability and reliability, ease of application, and applied pressure as factors in TIM choice and performance. In its technical discussion, higher conductivity is more efficient at transferring heat, while lower conductivity produces a greater temperature differential across the interface. Those statements are useful selection guidance, not a guarantee of cooling results on every consumer CPU or cooler.
Conductivity figures also need context. ARCTIC says it does not publish conductivity values for its own pastes and pads because, in its view, some manufacturers invent or inflate them. That is ARCTIC’s stated position, not independent proof about every competing product. Use a number as one piece of product information, not a stand-alone ranking.

- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
Check compatibility before choosing a material
Start with the requirements for the specific device and cooler, then compare products against those requirements. The AMD guidance is written for a device-specific context, so its factors are broadly useful to consider but its recommendations should not be treated as universal hardware rules.

- Mounting conditions: Consider the intended bond line, spreading behavior and pressure from the cooler mount. A material’s performance specification may not describe your actual installation conditions.
- Electrical behavior: Some metal-based compounds are electrically conductive. AMD warns that contamination can affect nearby device or motherboard elements and does not recommend electrically conductive TIM in the cited Versal-device context. Follow the hardware maker’s guidance rather than extending that device-specific advice to every system.
- Reliability and service: Consider long-term stability and whether the material suits the device’s expected service conditions.
- Application and quantity: Factor in how easily and safely it can be applied, how much is supplied, and the current local price.
For another example of why specifications are product-specific, Honeywell lists TG2000I thermal grease at 2.0 W/m·K and TG5500 at 5.0 W/m·K. Those are catalog values for those formulations, not a ranking of consumer CPU pastes.

- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- EFFORTLESS CLEANING WITH MX CLEANER: Removes old thermal paste thoroughly, preparing contact surfaces for optimal performance. Also available as a convenient bundle with MX-7
When is a more expensive paste worth it?
A higher price may make sense when a product’s documented properties match a particular application’s needs—for example, when its material behavior, electrical characteristics or reliability are required by the hardware design. It is not enough that the package costs more or advertises a larger conductivity number. If the device specifies a different interface material or mounting requirement, a cheap tube of paste is not necessarily a suitable substitute.
For routine consumer hardware, first check the cooler or device instructions and choose a compatible product. Compare the amount supplied and trustworthy product information at the price available in your market. Do not pay extra solely for a headline conductivity figure, and do not use a pad in place of paste—or paste in place of a pad—unless the hardware specification allows it.
