The trade-offs are uneven performance between games, occasional settings compromises, and limited VRAM headroom. Those results are one author’s measurements, not an independent benchmark consensus.
Why the RTX 4060 has a divided reputation
NVIDIA positioned the RTX 4060 for 1080p gaming. Its May 2023 launch announcement said the card would be available in July starting at $299 in the US; that was the original launch starting price, not a current price. The announcement also highlighted DLSS 3 and Frame Generation, features intended to improve supported games’ perceived performance.

NVIDIA vice president of global GeForce marketing Matt Wuebbling described the family this way: “The RTX 4060 family delivers PC gamers both great value and great performance at 1080p, whether they’re building a gaming battle box or an AI-assisted creation station.” That is NVIDIA’s marketing position, not an independent evaluation. NVIDIA’s launch announcement gives the original price and feature context.
The tension is clear: an 8GB card with a 1080p focus can make sense for many games, but its memory capacity and performance limits leave less room for demanding settings, higher resolutions, and future games. Calling it simply “good” or “bad” misses the practical question: which games, settings, and price?

What one RTX 4060 test reported
Suman Biswas’s September 11, 2026 article tested an 8GB RTX 4060 with a Ryzen 5 5600X, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and a PCIe Gen3 M.2 NVMe drive. Testing focused mostly on 1080p, with some 1440p results; DLSS was set to Quality. The reported averages below come from that article and should be read as results from its particular setup and settings, not as guaranteed performance for every RTX 4060 or every PC.
| Game | 1080p average | 1440p average |
|---|---|---|
| Monster Hunter Wilds | 58 FPS | 44 FPS |
| Elden Ring Nightreign | 60 FPS | 60 FPS |
| Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced | 62 FPS | 53 FPS |
| Forza Horizon 6 | 78 FPS | 65 FPS |
| Crimson Desert | 54 FPS | 46 FPS |
| Alan Wake 2 | 46 FPS | 32 FPS |
| Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth | 60 FPS | 44 FPS |
| Silent Hill 2 | 57 FPS | 40 FPS |
These are average frame rates reported by Biswas in 2026. Settings varied by game: some used reduced texture or ray-tracing settings, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth had an in-game frame-rate lock. The figures are therefore not an apples-to-apples comparison of games or a promise of results at maximum settings. For example, the article reported 78 FPS in Forza Horizon 6 at 1080p, but 32 FPS in Alan Wake 2 at 1440p.
Biswas also reported average power of 111.1W across the tested games. That is a measurement from this author’s test, not a standardized comparison against other cards or a claim about every partner-board model. The article’s reported figures and interpretation are available at Freedom251.

Is the RTX 4060 good for 1080p gaming?
For 1080p, the test suggests it can deliver playable performance in the selected games, with average results ranging from 46 to 78 FPS in seven titles and 60 FPS in Elden Ring Nightreign. Whether that is good enough depends on the game, the settings you are willing to adjust, and your target refresh rate. The reported averages do not establish 1% lows or the consistency of frame delivery, so they cannot tell you by themselves how smooth each game felt moment to moment.
DLSS Quality and settings adjustments were part of the reported approach. DLSS is available only in supported games, and results depend on the particular title and settings. NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 family page also presents manufacturer-selected performance comparisons: its chart specifies 1920×1080, highest game settings, DLSS Super Resolution Quality on RTX 20-, 30-, and 40-series cards, and Frame Generation on RTX 40-series cards, using an i9-12900K, 32GB of RAM, and Windows 11. Those conditions are useful context, but they are NVIDIA’s own test conditions and not directly interchangeable with Biswas’s setup.

What 8GB of VRAM means for 1440p
The 8GB capacity is the central constraint in the reported experience. The test’s results fall in several games at 1440p, including 32 FPS in Alan Wake 2 and 40 FPS in Silent Hill 2. Biswas’s interpretation is that VRAM can become a limit in GPU-heavy games and at 1440p. These results do not establish a universal threshold at which 8GB becomes insufficient; the impact depends on each game, resolution, texture quality, and other settings.
If you plan to play demanding games at 1440p, expect to evaluate settings rather than assume maximum textures and effects will fit your target. Upscaling and reduced settings helped in the tested cases, but the article does not establish performance for every game or configuration. For a 1080p-focused system, the compromises may be acceptable; for 1440p at high settings, the evidence here is less reassuring.

How to judge whether an RTX 4060 is worth buying
The author’s recommendation was conditional on finding the card at MSRP or at a favorable used price. The original US launch starting price was $299 in July 2023, but that historical figure does not establish today’s retail or used-market value. Current price and stock were not established, so compare live listings before deciding.
- Compare the exact card’s current price with alternatives available to you, rather than treating the 2023 launch price as a present-day benchmark.
- Check performance for the games and resolution you actually use; do not infer a blanket result from one game or from averages gathered with different settings.
- Consider whether 8GB of VRAM leaves enough room for your preferred texture quality and target resolution.
- Verify the specific board’s dimensions, power connectors, cooling, warranty, and fit with your case and power supply. RTX 4060 partner boards are not all physically identical.
- If comparing with an RTX 3060 or another card, weigh actual price, VRAM, native and upscaled performance, frame-time consistency, power, cooling and noise, physical fit, and features such as DLSS Frame Generation. Memory capacity alone does not establish which card is the better buy.
NVIDIA’s own comparison with the RTX 3060 uses its stated 1080p conditions and hardware; it should not be treated as a direct answer for every game, system, or price. The author’s test uses a different setup and method, and its measurements were not independently checked. Use both as context, then prioritize comparable results for the exact games and settings you care about.
