Is the Raspberry Pi 3B+ Still Good Enough? 5 Reasons to Keep It

The Raspberry Pi 3B+ is not more capable than newer models, but its full-size HDMI, micro-USB input and familiar interfaces can make it a sensible choice for modest workloads and existing builds.

The Raspberry Pi 3B+ does not outperform the Pi 4 or Pi 5 overall: those newer boards offer more processing power, higher memory options and newer interfaces. But if you are asking, “Is the Raspberry Pi 3B+ still good enough for my project, or should I buy a newer model?”, the answer can be yes when your workload is modest and your existing parts already fit. Its strongest case is avoiding an upgrade that would add capability you do not need.

1. Keeping a working setup can avoid a needless rebuild

If you already have a 3B+ installed, reusing it may be the simplest route for a project that still meets its needs. Existing GPIO wiring, an enclosure, power supply and software configuration can save time and parts changes. That is a practical benefit of what you already own, not proof that every case or peripheral will fit a different setup.

Before reusing components, check connector placement, operating-system support, power requirements and cooling. Compatibility depends on the particular case, accessories and software; the board’s documented interfaces alone do not guarantee a drop-in fit.

2. Full-size HDMI can simplify a direct display connection

The 3B+ has one full-size HDMI port. The Pi 4 and Pi 5 have two micro-HDMI ports instead. If your project needs a single display and you already have a standard HDMI cable, the 3B+ may avoid an adapter or a cable change. An adapter can also bridge the connector difference, so this is a convenience rather than a capability advantage.

3. Its micro-USB power input may fit an existing installation

Raspberry Pi specifies a 5V/2.5A micro-USB input for the 3B+. The Pi 4 uses USB-C, while the official Pi 5 recommendation is a 5V/5A USB-C supply. An appropriate supply you already own may make the 3B+ easier to retain in an existing build.

Use a supply that meets the board and project requirements; do not substitute an under-rated adapter. The connector and supply ratings do not establish that the 3B+ will use less energy in a complete project. Raspberry Pi’s power documentation also notes that measured current depends on the measurement setup: Raspberry Pi power requirements.

4. Its performance can be enough for a clearly limited workload

The 3B+ has a 1.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Cortex-A53 processor and 1GB of RAM, according to Raspberry Pi’s 3B+ specifications. That may be sufficient for a simple GPIO controller, lightweight network service or kiosk, provided the chosen software and peripherals fit within the board’s limits. This is a workload-based judgment, not an official compatibility guarantee or a benchmark claim.

The newer boards are better choices when the project needs more headroom. Raspberry Pi 4 offers faster processing, more RAM variants, USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. Pi 5 is a further performance step, with PCIe, two camera/display transceivers and configurations listed up to 16GB of RAM. Compare the requirements of your actual operating system, applications and peripherals rather than choosing by model age alone: Raspberry Pi 4 documentation and Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.

5. PoE remains an option for wired installations

The 3B+ supports Power over Ethernet when paired with a separate PoE HAT. That can suit a wired installation where suitable PoE network equipment is already available. Include the HAT and network equipment in the project’s cost and space planning; PoE is not a unique advantage over every newer Raspberry Pi.

What the 3B+ offers—and where its limits matter

Beyond the reasons to keep one, the official specifications help determine whether its built-in interfaces suit your project.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (B Plus) Starter Kit (32 GB EVO+ Edition, Premium Black Case)
  • Includes Made in UK Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (B Plus) with 1.4 GHz 64-bit Quad-Core Processor, 1 GB RAM
  • Dual Band 2.4GHz and 5GHz IEEE 802.11.b/g/n/ac Wireless LAN, Enhanced Ethernet Performance
  • Includes 32 GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10) Pre-loaded with OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit 2.5A USB Power Supply with Micro USB Cable and Noise Filter - Specially designed for the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (UL Listed)
  • Premium Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Case, Display Cable, 2 x Heat Sinks, GPIO Quick Reference Card, CanaKit Full Color Quick-Start Guide
  • Networking: dual-band 2.4/5GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2/BLE. Its Ethernet connection is Gigabit Ethernet over USB 2.0, with a stated maximum throughput of 300Mbps—not full-speed Gigabit throughput.
  • Ports and connectors: four USB 2.0 ports, one full-size HDMI port, CSI camera and DSI display connectors, a 40-pin GPIO header, microSD and 4-pole stereo/composite output.
  • Setup: Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance names a high-quality 2.5A micro-USB power supply and a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS.

These interfaces can be adequate for a modest build, but the 3B+ lacks the newer boards’ USB 3.0 and faster Ethernet options. If your project depends on those, or needs more memory or newer camera/display and PCIe options, choose a newer model.

How to choose for your project

  1. Write down the workload. Identify the operating system, applications, expected RAM use and attached peripherals. If you cannot establish that 1GB of RAM and the 3B+’s processor are enough, allow for more headroom.
  2. Check the connections. Match the project’s display, USB devices, network throughput, camera/display hardware and GPIO wiring to the board’s actual ports and connectors.
  3. Account for the whole installation. Verify the power supply, enclosure, cooling and accessory compatibility. For PoE, include a suitable HAT and network equipment.
  4. Check availability as well as capability. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2025 product brief states production of the 3B+ through at least January 2028. That is a production lifetime statement, not a guarantee of retail stock. The Pi 5 product page lists production through at least January 2036; availability still depends on sellers and region. See the Raspberry Pi product lifecycle information and Pi 5 product page.

Choose the 3B+ when its performance and interfaces satisfy the workload and reusing your existing parts has real value. Choose Pi 4 or Pi 5 when the project benefits from their additional performance, memory, USB 3.0, faster Ethernet or newer expansion options. The 3B+ can be the better fit for a particular build; the available specifications do not support claiming it beats newer models for most projects.
