Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 aggregate hierarchy places the RTX 5090 ahead in all three displayed performance columns. The RX 9070 XT is instead a much cheaper upper-tier card whose main advantage is value, not absolute performance leadership.
What the aggregate rankings show
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 hierarchy reports these scores for the two GPUs:

| GPU | Displayed column 1 | Displayed column 2 | Displayed column 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5090 | 166.3 | 135.15 | 88.02 |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | 116.7 | 85.3 | 47.4 |
These figures are directional aggregate-ranking evidence, not a universal claim about every game. Tom’s Hardware’s methodology and the definitions of each column should be read before converting the values into a single percentage advantage. A particular title, resolution, driver, ray-tracing setting or upscaling mode can change the gap, but the available aggregate evidence does not support calling the RX 9070 XT faster overall.
Why the RTX 5090 has the hardware advantage
Compute and memory resources
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 has 21,760 CUDA cores, 32 GB of GDDR7 memory and 1,792 GB/s of memory bandwidth. AMD’s RX 9070 XT has 64 compute units, a boost clock of up to 2,970 MHz and 16 GB of GDDR6. Core counts from different architectures are not directly comparable, but the 5090’s much larger memory capacity and bandwidth provide more headroom for high-resolution rendering and heavily textured workloads.

Ray tracing and AI acceleration
The RTX 5090 includes 170 fourth-generation RT cores and 680 fifth-generation Tensor Cores. The RX 9070 XT has 64 ray accelerators. Those specifications give NVIDIA a clear hardware advantage in demanding ray-traced workloads and AI-assisted features. They do not, by themselves, establish a fixed frame-rate lead in every game; game-level conclusions require results from the same test suite and settings.
Can the RX 9070 XT beat an RTX 5090 at 4K?
It can win an individual test under a narrowly defined combination of game, driver, quality preset, ray-tracing setting or upscaling option, but the supplied evidence does not identify a repeatable 4K scenario in which it overtakes the RTX 5090. The aggregate ranking points the other way. Treat any claim that the 9070 XT is generally faster at 4K with caution unless it names the exact game, version, settings and test platform.
VRAM capacity also needs context. The RTX 5090’s 32 GB can help with very high-resolution textures, creator applications and some AI workloads. More VRAM does not automatically produce a set gaming-FPS increase, and the RX 9070 XT’s 16 GB remains sufficient for many conventional gaming configurations.

Price changes the buying decision
| GPU | Approximate nominal launch price | Launch availability | Notable power or connector detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | About $599 | Board-partner cards from March 6, 2025 | Two 8-pin power connectors |
| GeForce RTX 5090 | About $1,999–$2,000 | Retail availability from January 30, 2025 | 575 W TDP listed by Puget Systems |
At those nominal launch prices, the RX 9070 XT costs roughly one-third as much as the RTX 5090. Actual 2026 prices, stock and regional taxes vary, so check current listings before buying. The cheaper card can deliver far more performance per dollar, but it cannot match the flagship’s absolute throughput.
Rank #2
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
Account for the whole system
A 575 W RTX 5090 changes more than the graphics-card line on a budget. Allow for an appropriately rated power supply, adequate cooling, case clearance and potentially higher electricity use. The RX 9070 XT’s two 8-pin connectors may fit more existing systems, although the complete platform still depends on the specific board, processor, case and power supply.
Which GPU fits which buyer?
Choose the RTX 5090 when
- You want the highest overall gaming performance and are willing to pay flagship pricing.
- You play heavily ray-traced titles or use AI-accelerated rendering and need the stronger RT and Tensor hardware.
- You need 32 GB of VRAM for high-resolution assets, professional applications or selected AI workloads.
- Your case, cooling and power supply can safely support a card with a listed 575 W TDP.
Choose the RX 9070 XT when
- Your budget is closer to $599 than $2,000 and performance per dollar matters more than the last tier of speed.
- You want an upper-tier 1440p or 4K gaming card without building around the RTX 5090’s power and cooling requirements.
- Your workloads do not depend on NVIDIA-specific RT or AI acceleration.
How to compare a specific game fairly
- Use results from the same reviewer, test system and driver version for both cards.
- Match resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing settings and texture quality.
- Record whether each result uses native rendering or an upscaler, and identify the quality mode.
- Check average FPS alongside one-percent lows and frame-time behavior.
- Note the tested card’s power limit, factory overclock and launch or street price.
Without those controls, a headline percentage can describe the test setup more than the GPUs themselves.
Verdict
The Radeon RX 9070 XT is not really faster than the GeForce RTX 5090 in the broad sense implied by the question. The RTX 5090 leads the cited 2026 aggregate rankings and has substantially greater compute, memory, ray-tracing and AI resources. The RX 9070 XT’s compelling argument is economic: at nominal launch pricing it costs about a third as much, making it a value-oriented alternative rather than a performance winner.
