Its included tabletop base and two modest-power eyepieces make it straightforward to start observing, but you need a stable raised surface, and its specifications should not be confused with the different GoScope 80 Backpack model.
What the Orion GoScope 80 TableTop includes
Orion’s June 2012 instruction manual identifies the TableTop as an air-spaced, fully coated achromatic refractor with an 80mm aperture, 350mm focal length and f/4.3 focal ratio. The manual identifies the telescope as model #10013 in one section and #9549 in its specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. - A 90-degree prism diagonal that accepts standard 1.25-inch eyepieces.
- Fully coated 20mm and 10mm eyepieces, producing 18x and 35x magnification with this telescope.
- An EZ Finder II, a non-magnifying red LED sight for aiming.
- A simple alt-azimuth tabletop base that moves up/down and left/right.
Orion lists the total telescope-and-mount weight as 5.7 lb: 2.9 lb for the tube and 2.8 lb for the mount. The tube can be removed from the base. Its mounting block fits Orion dovetail mounts and 1/4-20 photo tripods, according to the manual.

What can you see with the GoScope 80?
The 80mm aperture and short 350mm focal length make this a wide-field instrument suited to scanning and observing bright objects. Orion says it can show lunar craters, Jupiter’s bands, Saturn’s rings, Venus’s phases and many bright deep-sky objects. Expect faint deep-sky targets to appear visually subtle; Orion cautions that such views generally will not have the saturated colors seen in long-exposure images.

The supplied eyepieces provide 18x and 35x, useful starting magnifications for locating and observing targets. Orion’s manual gives about 2x per millimeter of aperture—roughly 160x for this 80mm telescope—as general useful-magnification guidance, not a promise of a sharp image at that power in every observing condition. The manual’s practical advice is: “Moderate magnifications are what give the best views.”
Is it a good beginner telescope?
It can suit a beginner who values portability, uncomplicated two-axis aiming and an included basic observing setup. The viewfinder helps point the telescope, and the alt-azimuth mount is intuitive to move. The trade-offs are the modest 18x and 35x supplied magnifications and the need to provide a suitable support surface. This review relies on Orion’s specifications and manual guidance; it does not claim firsthand testing or independently measured image quality.

Does the GoScope 80 TableTop come with a tripod?
The TableTop configuration comes with a tabletop base, not a full-length tripod. For tabletop observing, place it on a stable, appropriately raised support. If that is impractical, the manual says the mounting block is compatible with 1/4-20 photo tripods as well as Orion dovetail mounts. Confirm a tripod’s stability and connection before use.
What eyepieces fit the Orion GoScope 80?
The manual specifies a 1.25-inch diagonal, so the telescope accepts 1.25-inch eyepieces. It includes 20mm and 10mm eyepieces, which yield 18x and 35x respectively. Check an accessory’s barrel size and compatibility before buying; the manual’s format specification does not establish that every eyepiece or accessory will be a good optical match.

Setup and observing tips
- Choose a stable support. Set the tabletop base on a firm surface high enough for comfortable viewing, or use a compatible, stable photo tripod.
- Install the visual accessories. Orion says the telescope arrives almost fully assembled; the remaining setup includes installing the supplied accessories.
- Align the EZ Finder II in daylight. Aim the telescope at a distant object and adjust the non-magnifying sight so it points to the same target. Check alignment before observing.
- Track by nudging the mount. The alt-azimuth base moves up/down and left/right. As Earth rotates, objects drift through the view; they cross the field faster at higher magnification, so make small, frequent adjustments.
- For lunar detail, try a partial phase. Shadows along the terminator can reveal more surface relief than a full Moon. Orion says an optional Moon filter can reduce brightness and improve comfort.
Never point the telescope at the Sun without a professionally made solar filter designed for the instrument. Orion warns that viewing the Sun through an unfiltered optical instrument can cause permanent eye damage. A Moon filter is not a solar filter.

“GoScope 80” can refer to a different configuration. The High Point Scientific listing for SKU/MPN 52596 describes the GoScope 80 Backpack, not the older TableTop reviewed here. That model is listed with a 400mm focal length, f/5 ratio, 25mm and 10mm eyepieces, a 45-degree correct-image diagonal, an aluminum tripod, MoonMap 260, Moon filter and backpack. The GoScope 80 TableTop is best understood as a portable, simple refractor for bright targets and broad sky views—not as a high-magnification planetary telescope. Its 80mm aperture, included 18x and 35x eyepieces, and photo-tripod compatibility make for a useful starter package if you can supply a stable support. Its limitations are equally clear: modest included magnification, subtle views of faint objects, and the need to verify model identity when shopping.
