There is no official apples-to-apples benchmark proving that the Nintendo Switch 2 is faster overall than the base PlayStation 4. Switch 2 has newer graphics features and higher maximum TV-output capabilities, while Sony publishes a 1.84-teraflop GPU rating for the base PS4. Those specifications are not directly comparable measures of how well either console runs a particular game.
What the published specifications establish
| Console | Published hardware information | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo describes a custom processor made by NVIDIA. Its official specifications do not publish a TFLOPS rating. Nintendo Switch 2 specifications | Confirms the processor supplier and design description, but does not provide a directly comparable GPU-throughput figure. |
| Base PlayStation 4 | Sony lists an eight-core AMD Jaguar CPU, an AMD Radeon-based GPU rated at 1.84 TFLOPS, and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. The original PS4 FAQ describes the GPU as 18 compute units producing 1.84 teraflops. Sony PS4 specifications | These are published specifications for the base PS4, not the PS4 Pro. The TFLOPS rating is a theoretical GPU figure, not a cross-console game-performance score. |
TFLOPS figures alone cannot settle the comparison. Different GPU architectures, power limits, memory systems, rendering resolutions, graphics settings, and game optimizations affect real performance. Nintendo has not published a Switch 2 TFLOPS number in the official materials cited here, so assigning one—or using an unsourced estimate to claim a fixed performance multiplier—would overstate what is known.

Switch 2 has newer graphics capabilities, but games must use them
NVIDIA says the Switch 2 processor includes an NVIDIA GPU with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores, and describes support for DLSS-related features. NVIDIA’s Switch 2 processor announcement These capabilities can support techniques such as ray tracing and image reconstruction, but their presence in the hardware does not mean every game uses them or delivers a particular visual result.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

Maximum output is not the same as a game’s rendered resolution
Nintendo says that, when connected to a TV through the dock, Switch 2 can output video at up to 4K and games can run at up to 120 fps in supported output modes. Nintendo also says 4K output is capped at 60 fps. These are maximum system output capabilities, not promises that every game renders natively at 4K or reaches 60 or 120 fps.
A game may render internally at a lower resolution, use upscaling, or choose a lower frame rate to meet its visual or performance goals. Nintendo’s maximum TV-output figures also do not establish the resolution or performance a game achieves in handheld mode. Sony’s PS4 FAQ describes support for game output up to 1080p and up to 60 fps; those are output ceilings as well, not a guarantee that every PS4 game reaches them.

Why there is no single game-performance verdict
The official specifications cited here do not provide a controlled, same-game comparison between Switch 2 and the base PS4. To show which performs better in a particular title, a direct test would need to compare the same game version and equivalent graphics modes, image quality, resolution, and frame-rate behavior. Without that evidence, a general claim that one console is faster in every game is not established.

For a purchasing or play decision, look for testing of the specific game you care about. Check whether the comparison identifies the console version, graphics mode, rendered or output resolution, and actual frame-rate behavior; a headline resolution or maximum output number alone is not enough.

Account for the different ways the consoles are used
Switch 2 is a hybrid system designed for handheld and TV play; the base PS4 is a home console. That difference matters when choosing which system fits your needs, but it is separate from raw rendering performance. In particular, Switch 2’s maximum docked output says nothing by itself about how a game performs in handheld mode.
