Yes, but only if the price and condition make sense. The Pixel 8 is still covered by Google’s seven-year software-support commitment, which points to updates through October 2030. That makes it a viable used or refurbished phone in 2026, not an automatic bargain: check the battery, screen, seller protections and the price of a newer Pixel before buying.
How long will the Pixel 8 get updates?
Google says the Pixel 8 and later receive updates for seven years from the date each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The commitment covers Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. Google announced the policy on October 4, 2023, describing it as “seven years of software support” for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Because the Pixel 8 first became available in October 2023, that policy implies support into October 2030. Google’s Pixel update policy has the current support details; Google’s 2023 announcement explains what the commitment includes.

This is a meaningful remaining support period for a phone bought in 2026. It is a policy commitment, not a promise that every Feature Drop or feature will be available in every country or on every device configuration.
When is a Pixel 8 a sensible buy?
It is most appealing if you want a relatively compact Android phone, do not need the newest performance, and can get a verified unit at a clear discount to a newer phone. Google lists a 6.2-inch display, a useful distinction if you prefer a smaller phone. Check Google’s Pixel 8 specifications for the full hardware details.

A TechRadar comparison published August 21, 2025 identifies the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 and the Pixel 10’s Tensor G5 and describes the newer model as more powerful. That is dated comparative reporting, not a current benchmark; it supports a general generation gap, not a precise performance estimate for every task. Read the Pixel 10 versus Pixel 8 comparison.
There is no reliable universal price cutoff for the Pixel 8: the deal depends on your region, storage, device condition, and the newer phone’s price after any promotion or trade-in. A comparison published in 2025 said the Pixel 8 was cheaper but becoming harder to find new then; that does not establish its 2026 price or availability. What should you check before buying refurbished or used?
Google’s US store has a refurbished, unlocked Pixel 8 listing, but a listing does not guarantee current stock, a particular price, or availability in other countries. Check the live offer and compare it with sellers in your region. See Google’s US refurbished Pixel 8 listing.

- Lock status: Confirm the phone is unlocked and compatible with your carrier before paying.
- Returns and warranty: Read the seller’s actual return period and warranty terms, including who handles a claim.
- Storage and price: Compare the same storage capacity and similar condition across offers, and account for any newer-phone trade-in or promotion.
- What is included: Check whether accessories are included rather than assuming they come with the phone.

How to compare it with a newer Pixel
Compare the full offer, not just the model name or advertised price. Use these questions to decide whether the savings justify choosing the older phone:
- What is the total price after trade-in credits and promotions?
- Are both devices in comparable condition, with credible battery information?
- How much software-support time remains for each device?
- Do you prefer the Pixel 8’s 6.2-inch size, or the newer model’s size and feel?
- Will the Pixel 8’s performance and camera capabilities meet your needs?
- Do both offers have comparable storage, warranty coverage and return terms?
If the Pixel 8 is only a little cheaper after those adjustments, the newer model may be the better fit. If the savings are substantial and the unit is in good condition with clear seller protections, its remaining support makes it easier to recommend.

Should you buy the Pixel 8 in 2026?
Buy it if you find a well-described unit at a compelling local price, verify its condition and protections, and are comfortable choosing a less powerful previous-generation phone. Skip it if the battery or seller terms are unclear, or if a newer Pixel is close enough in total cost to make the trade-off unattractive. A Pixel 8-specific case or screen protector can be a sensible add-on; confirm that the accessory explicitly fits Pixel 8, since fit is model-specific.
