A black stripe identifies one conductor, but it does not have a universal positive-or-negative meaning. Some manufacturer manuals assign marked wire to negative; others assign it to positive. Check the documentation for your exact equipment, then keep the same conductor connected to the same polarity at both ends.
What the stripe means—and what it does not
On ordinary two-conductor speaker cable, a stripe, ridge, printed text, or different conductor color helps you tell the wires apart. It is not a dependable polarity code across all brands.

The manuals illustrate the conflict: Harman’s Infinity Reference RS Series manual says a ridge or other coding is usually considered negative, while Monoprice’s product manual says the identified conductor is usually used for positive. Those are product-specific conventions, not a universal standard. If your cable or equipment documentation specifies which conductor is positive, follow it; otherwise, use the mark only to track one conductor consistently.
How to connect speaker wire with a black stripe
- Turn off the amplifier or receiver. Follow its manual before connecting or changing speaker wires.
- Find the polarity markings. Look for + and − at the amplifier’s speaker outputs and the speaker terminals. Use those markings—not the wire color alone—as your reference.
- Choose one conductor to track. Use the black stripe, ridge, printing, or other mark to identify that conductor from end to end. If the equipment manual does not assign it a polarity, connect it to either + or − at the amplifier, then connect that same conductor to the matching terminal at the speaker.
- Repeat the mapping for every speaker. Keep the marked conductor connected to the same polarity on each run. Rotel’s C8/C8+ manual warns that reversing one connection can make bass output very weak and degrade stereo imaging.
- Prepare bare wire according to the product manual. For example, Origin Acoustics’ cited manual calls for stripping 6–12 mm (¼–½ inch) and twisting the strands. That measurement is guidance for the cited product, not a universal requirement.
If the wire is part of a car-audio harness
Do not apply generic speaker-wire assumptions to a supplied harness. Wire colors and pinouts depend on the exact model, and the vehicle-side wiring may use different colors.
#1 Best Overall
- IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (100 feet)
- CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
- CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
- SIMPLE INSTALL: Black line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
- Garmin’s cited Fusion harness documentation maps white to positive and white with a black stripe to negative.
- Sony’s documented 16-pin harness assigns black-striped speaker leads to negative and warns that vehicle-side wire colors can differ from its harness colors.
Check the wiring diagram for the exact product and verify the vehicle-side wires separately; neither example establishes the pinout for another model.
Choosing replacement speaker wire
If you need replacement cable, choose two-conductor wire with clear, easy-to-follow markings. The key is being able to distinguish one conductor from the other throughout the run. Follow the amplifier and speaker manufacturers’ cable requirements for gauge and installation. As one product-specific example, Harman’s Infinity Reference RS Series manual recommends #18 gauge generally and #16 for runs over 25 feet; those recommendations should not be generalized to other equipment.
