The Astell&Kern SP4000T is a $3,300 portable digital audio player built around a distinctive choice: use its tube amplifier, conventional op-amp amplification, or a hybrid of the two. It offers extensive tube adjustments and high-resolution format support, but its 565 g weight and manufacturer-rated battery life make it a poor fit for anyone expecting a light, all-day pocket player. The specifications explain what it offers; they do not establish how it sounds or whether the tube modes are worth the premium.
What the SP4000T is designed to do
Astell&Kern positions the SP4000T in its A&ultima line as a portable player that gives listeners three amplification choices: Tube AMP, OP AMP, and Hybrid AMP. Tube operation is available only in Tube AMP and Hybrid AMP. The hardware list includes four Raytheon JAN6418 vacuum tubes, two AK4191EQ digital processors, and two AK4499EX DACs. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent evidence of superior sound.

The company frames the product around the question, “How can we bring deeper emotion through analog sound?” That is Astell&Kern’s product-page language, not an independent assessment. The practical distinction is that the SP4000T lets a listener select different amplifier arrangements and, in tube modes, adjust how the tubes operate.
What the tube modes and adjustments change
In Tube AMP or Hybrid AMP, the player offers Triode, Ultra Linear, and Pentode modes, plus three selectable tube-current levels. Astell&Kern describes Triode as emphasizing tube harmonic texture, Ultra Linear as balancing tonal character and output, and Pentode as maximizing output and dynamic range. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions; no independent listening test here confirms that the differences are audible, desirable, or consistent across headphones.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Triode: Astell&Kern says it emphasizes tube harmonic texture.
- Ultra Linear: Astell&Kern presents it as a balance between Triode’s tonal character and Pentode’s output.
- Pentode: Astell&Kern says it maximizes tube-amplifier output and dynamic range.
- Tube current: Three selectable levels alter the tube amplification operating point, according to the manufacturer.
This flexibility is the SP4000T’s clearest differentiator on paper. Whether it meaningfully improves your listening experience is a question for a hands-on audition with your own music and headphones.
Will it work with your headphones?
The SP4000T has a 3.5 mm unbalanced headphone output and a 4.4 mm balanced output, with 5-pole support listed for the balanced connection. Astell&Kern specifies no-load output levels of 4.2 Vrms unbalanced and 8 Vrms balanced, and output impedance of 0.7 ohm and 1.7 ohm respectively. Those figures describe the player’s listed outputs; they do not guarantee a suitable match with every headphone or IEM. Check your headphones’ connection and electrical requirements, and audition the combination if possible.

There is also a 3.5 mm optical output. The presence of multiple connections makes the player adaptable to different setups, but the specifications alone do not establish how it performs with a particular load.
Size, battery, and everyday portability
The player measures 85.7 × 150 × 19.5 mm and weighs approximately 565 g. It has a 6-inch, 2160 × 1080 touch display. Those dimensions and mass make it substantial for a device described as portable: it may suit a bag-based setup or stationary listening, but buyers should consider whether they want to carry that much weight every day.

Astell&Kern lists a 7,450 mAh, 3.8 V lithium-polymer battery and says charging takes about five hours with PD 3.0. Its playback estimate is about 10 hours under a specific test condition: FLAC at 16-bit/44.1 kHz, volume 80, screen off, and low gain. That estimate should not be treated as runtime for other formats, volume levels, gain settings, or screen use. Real-world battery life and thermal behavior have not been independently established here.
Storage, formats, and wireless
The SP4000T includes 256 GB of built-in NAND storage and one microSD slot supporting cards up to 1.5 TB, according to Astell&Kern. The company lists PCM decoding up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD512, along with support for common formats including WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, APE, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF, and DSF.

Price and what this review can establish
Astell&Kern’s official product page lists the SP4000T at $3,300. Treat that as the manufacturer-displayed price, not a verified current street price: regional pricing, retailer stock, warranty terms, and current availability can differ. The official specifications establish the hardware and stated features, but this assessment is not a hands-on review. Sound quality, the audible value of the tube choices, practical battery life, reliability, and comparative performance remain unverified.

For a purchase decision, the central trade-off is clear: the SP4000T prioritizes configurable amplification and extensive format support in a heavy, high-priced player. It is most relevant to listeners who specifically want tube and hybrid operating choices and are comfortable verifying headphone fit and current local pricing before buying. If portability means low weight or long runtime across varied settings, the published figures provide reason to look carefully at those constraints.
