At the U.S. prices reported in June 2026, the Steam Machine’s $1,049 starting price is not obviously a bad deal—but a parts list alone cannot prove it is cheaper than building an equivalent PC. The closest published compact-PC estimate in the available figures was $1,242.84 before tax, shipping, tools, and assembly, and it used a desktop graphics card as a proxy rather than matching Valve’s custom design. That makes the comparison useful, not conclusive.
How much did the Steam Machine cost?
PCWorld reported four U.S. configurations on June 22, 2026. These are dated reported prices, not a verified live October 2026 offer; check Valve’s current regional store listing and stock before buying.

| Configuration | Reported U.S. price |
|---|---|
| 512GB, without Steam Controller | $1,049 |
| 512GB, with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| 2TB, without Steam Controller | $1,349 |
| 2TB, with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
In that report, choosing 2TB instead of 512GB added $300, while the controller bundle added $79. Those increments describe the reported configurations, not necessarily a current offer in every region.

What is included in the Steam Machine’s value?
Valve introduced the Steam Machine alongside the Steam Controller and Steam Frame in its November 12, 2025 announcement, describing them as new hardware joining the Steam Deck family and expecting all three in 2026. PCWorld described the base machine as having a six-core semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics with 8GB, 16GB DDR5, and a 512GB SSD. Those are reported system specifications, not a claim that the custom parts correspond exactly to off-the-shelf desktop components.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
In a July 6, 2026 interview with Tom’s Hardware, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the original design reflected memory and storage costs from about two years earlier. He said a PC with similar or greater performance would likely be at a similar price point, and pointed to the compact form factor, quiet operation, CEC integration, and dedicated Bluetooth antenna for controller support as features a conventional parts list does not capture. That is Valve’s explanation of the price, not independent proof that the machine is worth it.
Value also depends on how you intend to use it. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat put the library question this way: “I think the value of the Steam Machine is inherently tied to the value of your Steam library in a lot of ways.” If you already own Steam games, that library affects how useful the system may be to you; it does not make the hardware itself cheaper. Griffais similarly noted that buyers will differ in what they consider good value.

What does a DIY compact-PC comparison show?
SteamHardware.io, an independent hobby project that says it is not affiliated with Valve, published a U.S. Mini-ITX parts estimate checked June 23–24, 2026. It totaled $1,242.84 before tax, shipping, tools, and assembly. Its prices are historical estimates, not current quotes.
| Part in the estimate | Listed price |
|---|---|
| Ryzen 5 8400F | $149.99 |
| Radeon RX 7600 | $279.99 |
| Mini-ITX motherboard | $169.99 |
| 16GB DDR5 memory | $199 |
| 512GB NVMe SSD | $101.99 |
| Case | $169.99 |
| 750W SFX power supply | $149.99 |
| Low-profile CPU cooler | $21.90 |
| Estimated total before exclusions | $1,242.84 |
The estimate used a desktop Radeon RX 7600 as a pricing proxy. SteamHardware.io says its build does not match the Steam Machine’s acoustics, size, custom motherboard, integrated power delivery, or thermal design. The parts total therefore answers a limited question—what this particular compact-PC parts list was estimated to cost at that time—not what an identical Steam Machine would cost to build.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
PCWorld also cited a $1,072.72 PCPartPicker approximation using a Ryzen 5 7600X, Radeon RX 7600, and 512GB SSD. The report did not provide a complete build list, and the figure does not account for matching Valve’s integrated design. It is another illustration, not a definitive equivalent or a current quote.

The June 2026 comparison makes the base price plausible for a buyer who wants a compact, quiet, living-room-oriented Steam PC and values the integration. It does not establish that the Steam Machine beats a DIY build on performance per dollar: there is no independently tested, like-for-like performance comparison in these figures, and the parts estimates exclude some costs.
Before deciding, compare the options using the same country and purchase date, and account for what you actually need:
- Total cost: Include tax, shipping, tools, and assembly for a DIY system, and compare against a current local Steam Machine price.
- Performance: Look for independent tests at the games, resolution, and settings you care about. The cited parts estimates do not provide a benchmark comparison.
- Space and sound: A component list does not tell you whether a build will match the Steam Machine’s footprint or noise.
- Living-room setup: Consider the value of CEC integration and the dedicated Bluetooth antenna if you want TV and controller use.
- Storage and controller: Decide whether 512GB is enough and whether you need the controller bundle; the reported price steps were substantial.
- Software and library: Consider the flexibility you want from a PC and whether your existing Steam games influence the purchase. The available figures do not benchmark total ownership cost against consoles or other platforms.
On the evidence available, “not a bad deal” is a defensible personal verdict, not a universal one. The $1,242.84 DIY estimate is higher than the reported $1,049 base price, but it is dated, excludes costs, and is not an apples-to-apples recreation. The price-out supports the argument that the Steam Machine may be fairly priced; it does not prove that every buyer gets better value than building or choosing another platform.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 2TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
