“Vibe coded” describes an app built with substantial help from AI; it does not tell you whether the finished app is safe. Before downloading, check who publishes it, whether its requested access fits its advertised job, what it says about data, whether its behavior is transparent, and whether it asks you to bypass protections. These checks can help you decide whether to proceed, pause, or avoid an app—but they are not a security audit or a guarantee.
1. Check the source and publisher
Prefer the official app store or a download source you can independently verify. Compare the publisher name and listing with the developer or service you intended to download. An unfamiliar or imitative name is a reason to stop and investigate; a familiar-looking icon or polished listing is not proof of identity.

Platform rules vary by location. Apple says that, outside the EU, iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS users must download apps from the App Store, where Apple describes developer identification, automated and human review, and runtime code-signature checks. See Apple’s platform security overview. Store review and signing are useful safeguards, not a promise that an app has no vulnerabilities or will handle your data appropriately.
2. Match permissions to the app’s job
When an app asks for access to location, contacts, microphone, camera, photos, or other sensitive information, ask what advertised feature needs it. A mapping app may have a clear reason to request location; a basic calculator usually has less obvious need for contacts or a microphone. Consider whether access is needed now, or only when you use a particular feature.

Google Play policy says sensitive permissions and APIs should be necessary for features or services promoted in the listing. A mismatch does not prove malicious intent, but it is a practical reason to deny the request, pause, and seek an explanation. See Google Play’s User Data policy.
3. Read the privacy and data disclosures
Look for what information the app says it collects, how it uses it, and whether it shares it. On Google Play, the Data safety section is meant to describe collection, use, and sharing, including data handling by third-party libraries and SDKs. Developers are responsible for keeping the disclosure accurate and current, according to the Google Play User Data policy.
Treat the disclosure as a claim to evaluate, not independent proof of what the app actually does. If the app’s stated purpose and its data practices do not seem to fit, or the disclosure leaves an important question unanswered, avoid entering sensitive information until you can establish more.
4. Look for a clear identity and consistent behavior
Compare the app’s name, publisher, description, permission prompts, and what it actually does. Be cautious if it imitates another developer or a system prompt, hides its purpose, introduces functions the listing did not describe, or collects or transmits private information without clear notice.

Google Play’s mobile unwanted software policy says that code should deliver on promises made to the user and addresses deceptive claims, undisclosed functions, unexpected device effects, and private-data handling. Read the Google Play mobile unwanted software policy. A request that appears unrelated to the app’s core job deserves scrutiny, especially if the explanation is vague or inconsistent.
5. Keep protections on; pause at pressure tactics
Do not turn off Google Play Protect simply because an app asks. Google’s policy says apps should not deceive users into disabling protections. Requests to ignore a warning, install an unknown add-on, or bypass an ordinary safeguard are serious warning signals—not routine setup steps. See the Google Play mobile unwanted software policy.
If you already installed an app and are concerned, revoke permissions you do not understand and remove the app if its behavior remains troubling. On Android, review the app’s permissions in your device’s Settings; exact menu names can vary by device and Android version.

There is no verified statistic here that measures what share of vibe-coded apps is safe or unsafe, and the available evidence does not establish that AI-generated code itself causes a particular security outcome. One 2024 study by Xinyi Hou, Yanjie Zhao, and Haoyu Wang examined 786,036 LLM apps collected from six LLM app stores. The authors identified 15,146 apps with misleading descriptions, 1,366 that collected sensitive personal information against their privacy policies, and 616 assessed as potentially usable for malware generation, phishing, or similar malicious activity. Those figures describe that study’s specific population—not ordinary mobile apps or apps built with AI coding assistants. See the 2024 paper, “On the (In)Security of LLM App Stores”.

For decisions involving financial, health, workplace, or other highly sensitive data, these consumer checks cannot establish that an app is safe. Use an approved alternative or seek a qualified security review. OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Cheat Sheet offers developer guidance such as least privilege, careful third-party component use, and updates; OWASP describes it as a starting point, not a comprehensive guide or a consumer certification method.

Assess both against the same five signals. A side-by-side check can make trade-offs easier to see:
| Check | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Source and publisher | Official or verifiable download source; identifiable publisher that matches the expected app. |
| Permissions | Whether each sensitive permission supports an advertised feature. |
| Privacy disclosures | Clarity about data collection, use, and sharing, including third-party code. |
| Purpose and behavior | Whether the description, prompts, and actual functions agree. |
| Protection pressure | Whether either app asks you to ignore warnings or disable safeguards. |
A stronger showing on these checks is a useful reason to prefer one app, but it still does not certify its security.
