Maybe—but “free” can mean no purchase price, permission to use the software, access to particular features, or vendor support, and those are separate questions. To assess a data grid for your project, identify the exact edition, version, artifact and dependencies; inspect the license shipped with them; then compare it with the vendor’s documentation for that edition. A free download alone does not establish permission for every use, redistribution rights, or a support commitment.
What “free” needs to mean for your project
There is no product-specific yes or no without knowing which data grid and release you mean, how you obtained it, and what you plan to do with it. Before deciding, separate these questions:

- Price: Is the software available without a fee, or is that only a trial or a particular edition?
- Permission: Does the applicable license permit your intended use, including commercial use, modification or redistribution, and what conditions apply?
- Features: Does the edition include the capabilities your project needs?
- Support: Is there a vendor-backed support or maintenance commitment, or only community support?
A project can have a free-to-use component but still need a paid edition for a feature or a separate support arrangement. Conversely, a community edition can have license conditions worth reading closely.

These commands help locate license files, build coordinates, repositories and possible edition markers. They are clues for review, not a legal determination.

A missing match does not prove a dependency is unrestricted: its license may be inside an archive, provided separately, or tied to a server-side account. A found license file is not proof that an instance is paid either; read its contents and establish which artifact it belongs to.
Trace the exact artifact and its dependencies
Maven
Record the declared group, artifact and version, then inspect the resolved dependency tree—not only the direct dependency. Run mvn dependency:tree to see transitive dependencies. Treat artifact names and POM license metadata as discovery aids; verify the license against the actual artifacts and their accompanying notices.

Gradle and other build systems
Inspect resolved dependencies as well as build scripts, including repository declarations. A familiar project name in a manifest does not by itself identify the precise distribution or establish the license terms for the artifact you resolved.

Containers and vendor deployments
For a containerized deployment, identify the image and tag, mounted configuration, environment and any vendor license configuration. Products can mark editions differently. GridGain, for example, documents an edition license file named gridgain-license.xml for Enterprise and Ultimate, edition-specific Maven dependencies, and Kubernetes ConfigMap handling. Check the exact installation and version guidance in its licensing documentation and artifact and deployment documentation.

Read the license against the way you will use the grid
Once you have the artifact identity, read the license and notices shipped with that version, then check the vendor’s official edition and licensing pages. Focus on the activities your project actually involves: using the software internally, modifying it, distributing it with an application, or offering it as a hosted service. Check any conditions on attribution, patent rights, redistribution or commercial activity that apply to those activities. If the license and documentation do not clearly cover your use, ask the vendor or qualified counsel rather than treating a terminal search as a permission check.
For instance, GridGain’s Community Edition License combines Apache 2.0 sections with a Commons Clause condition restricting selling the software as defined by that license. The Community label alone therefore does not settle whether a particular commercial arrangement is permitted. GridGain’s licensing documentation also says Enterprise and Ultimate come with a 30-day trial license; that trial term is not evidence of a permanent free license.

Compare edition, features and support separately
Use a comparison only for the specific candidates and versions you are evaluating. Vendor boundaries differ, so one product’s community-versus-commercial split cannot be applied to another.

These examples illustrate why you should compare license permission, required features, artifact identity and support as distinct items. They are not substitutes for checking the exact release you intend to deploy.

Make a project-specific decision
- Identify the dependency: Record its exact version, edition, source or vendor distribution, resolved transitive dependencies, and—if relevant—container image and tag.
- Locate applicable terms: Read license and notice files for the actual artifacts, plus the vendor’s official documentation for that edition and release.
- Match terms to your use: Check the planned commercial use, modifications, redistribution or hosting against the license conditions.
- Check operational needs: Confirm required features are included and decide whether community support is sufficient or a vendor-backed patch and support stream is needed.
- Resolve uncertainty before shipping: If the artifact’s terms or your planned use remain unclear, obtain clarification from the vendor or qualified legal counsel.
The terminal can establish useful facts about what is in the project. It cannot, on its own, establish that an edition is free for your particular use.
