Yes—Telegram says cloud storage is unlimited and free, but the upload limit still applies to each file. Telegram’s FAQ lists a maximum of 2 GB per file for free users and 4 GB per file with Premium. “Unlimited” describes Telegram’s published cloud-storage policy; it is not a published total-capacity figure or an independently verified guarantee.
What “unlimited” means in Telegram
Telegram’s Premium FAQ says unlimited cloud storage remains free. That means Telegram does not publish a total cloud-storage quota for an account in the material covered here; it does not mean every file can be any size. Telegram’s FAQ sets a per-file ceiling, as shown below.

| Account | Maximum file size | Overall cloud-storage policy |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Up to 2 GB per file, according to Telegram’s FAQ (accessed 2026). | Telegram says unlimited cloud storage is included free. |
| Premium | Up to 4 GB per file, according to Telegram’s FAQ (accessed 2026). | Telegram says unlimited cloud storage remains available. |
Telegram’s 2022 Premium announcement also said free users could download files up to 4 GB when uploaded by Premium subscribers. That is a download allowance for those files, not a 4 GB upload limit for free accounts. Premium is not required for cloud storage generally; the higher upload ceiling is one reason it may matter to someone who regularly sends large files. Telegram lists purchases through the App Store, Google Play, and, in some direct Android, Desktop, and macOS app versions, @PremiumBot. Prices and availability depend on region and purchase channel.

How cloud storage differs from space on your phone
Telegram Cloud Chats sync across devices, so messages and files can be available on another device when you sign in to the same account. A file retained in Telegram’s cloud is not necessarily taking up the same amount of space in your phone’s local cache. Telegram provides a cache-clearing control for reclaiming local device storage without logging out.
- Open Telegram’s Settings.
- Choose Data and Storage.
- Open Storage Usage, then use the cache-clearing controls shown by your app.
Clearing the local cache is different from deleting cloud content or making a separate archive. It frees device space; it does not create an independent backup. Menu details can vary by app version, so use the controls presented in your current Telegram app. (Telegram FAQ)

Cloud Chats and Secret Chats are not the same
Telegram’s two chat modes make different trade-offs between cross-device access and privacy design:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Cloud Chats: Telegram says messages, photos, videos, and documents are stored on its servers in encrypted form so they can sync across devices. Its Privacy Policy says the data is heavily encrypted and that the associated encryption keys are stored in other data centers in different jurisdictions. This describes Telegram’s stated system, not an independent security audit.
- Secret Chats: Telegram says these use end-to-end encryption with a key known to the participants. They are not stored as chats on Telegram’s servers and are accessible only on the devices to or from which they were sent. That device-specific design means a Secret Chat does not offer the same cloud synchronization across devices.
Choose based on the trade-off you need: cloud access across devices, or Secret Chat’s device-specific end-to-end encrypted mode. Neither description should be read as a claim that every Telegram conversation has the same storage or encryption behavior. (Telegram Privacy Policy)

Can you export Telegram data as a backup?
Telegram’s FAQ says the app can export Telegram data and chats. An export is a separate local copy, not an extension of Telegram’s cloud storage, and the FAQ material does not establish that every category is included or retained in a particular way. Before treating an export as a complete archive, consult the export controls in your current app and inspect the files it creates.
If you want to keep a separate copy, an external drive can be one destination for exported files; it is optional and does not expand Telegram’s cloud. (Telegram FAQ)

Verdict: useful cloud access, not a measured backup guarantee
Telegram’s published offer is straightforward: free cloud storage with a 2 GB-per-file upload ceiling, rising to 4 GB per file with Premium. Cloud Chats sync across devices, while Secret Chats stay tied to their originating devices. Use cache clearing to reclaim local space and consider an export when you need a separate copy. Telegram does not publish an independently verified total storage capacity or uptime guarantee in the cited material, so “unlimited” should not be mistaken for a promise of unlimited file size or an audited backup service.
