Optional features may temporarily process selected content at a different encryption level, and Sync’s Terms say escrow-key account recovery means an account is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis. How Sync.com protects files in core storage
Sync’s Privacy Policy, last updated September 15, 2026, says: “Sync’s core storage service is end-to-end encrypted by default.” Its public SOC 3 report describes client-side AES-256 encryption before transmission and TLS in transit. In practical terms, Sync presents core file storage as encrypted on the client before files are sent to its servers.

That description is not proof that every current app implementation has been independently tested. The Privacy Policy also distinguishes stored File Data from account information: Sync says it generally does not access or process stored file content, subject to stated exceptions and feature-related processing. It may process account metadata, including storage information, to calculate usage and limits. Read Sync’s Privacy Policy and Trust Center for the provider’s statements and available assurance materials.
Can Sync.com access your files?
For core storage, Sync says it generally cannot access stored file content because it is end-to-end encrypted. That statement has qualifications: certain optional features may temporarily process specific files or selected content using a different encryption level so the features can work. It is more accurate to say that access and processing depend partly on which features you enable than to treat every file interaction as identical.

Sync’s Privacy Center says users choose whether features that cannot operate fully end-to-end encrypted are enabled or disabled. The help page identifies extended previews, media streaming, Microsoft editor, download accelerator, link compatibility, and password reset among features or controls with privacy implications. Defaults and availability can change, so inspect the current controls in your account rather than relying on an older description. For a team account, the administrator manages relevant settings. See Sync’s help center.
Which settings deserve a privacy check?
- Preview and streaming features: Extended previews and media streaming may involve processing content to display or play it. Decide whether the convenience is worth enabling each feature.
- Editing and transfer features: Microsoft editor and download accelerator have privacy implications listed by Sync. Check how the current feature works before using it with sensitive files.
- Link compatibility: This setting may affect how shared links function. Review its current description and consider the sensitivity of files shared by link.
- Password reset: Sync lists password reset among the relevant controls. Check whether the available reset method fits your preference for recoverability versus strict control over keys.
These examples do not establish that each feature processes every file or that all accounts have the same defaults. Sync’s current Privacy Center settings and explanations are the practical source for your account.

Does account recovery affect zero-knowledge encryption?
Yes, according to Sync’s Terms. They say that enabling escrow-key account recovery means the account is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis, because Sync retains technical ability to assist with recovery. This is a trade-off: recovery can help if you lose access, while strict zero-knowledge configuration limits the provider’s role in restoring access.

Where does Sync.com store your data?
Sync’s Privacy Policy distinguishes account information from file data. It says account information is stored in Canada and with U.S. service providers. File data is stored in Canada or the United States depending on the selected data region. That means you should not assume all information—or every user’s files—are stored only in Canada.
If residency, regulatory, or contractual requirements matter, verify the selected region, plan, contract, and applicable terms for your account. Sync’s GDPR page identifies Sync.com Inc. as controller and describes client-side encryption, but that does not replace checking the data-location terms that apply to you. Review Sync’s GDPR Privacy Policy.

What account protections should you use?
Encryption for stored files does not protect an account from someone who gains access to your credentials or an authenticated device. Sync recommends using a strong, unique password and enabling two-factor authentication. It also suggests monitoring devices, sessions, and account events. These are provider recommendations, not measured guarantees of account safety. Consult Sync’s account-security guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use a password that is unique to Sync rather than reused elsewhere.
- Enable two-factor authentication in the account settings if available to you.
- Review active devices and sessions, and investigate activity you do not recognize.
- Consider whether your chosen recovery options match your privacy and access needs.
What do Sync’s SOC reports establish?
Sync’s Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 materials, and says reports may be provided on request. Its public SOC 3 report describes client-side encryption, TLS in transit, AES-256 applied before transmission, and Canadian colocation infrastructure. These documents provide information about controls and stated practices; their existence does not guarantee flawless security or independently prove every current application claim.

Check the report itself for its scope and covered period before treating it as current assurance. The available materials do not, by themselves, establish a recent public independent audit specifically covering Sync’s current client applications and encryption implementation.
How to judge whether Sync.com fits your needs
Evaluate the service across separate questions rather than relying on a single “secure” or “private” label:
- Core storage: Are you comfortable relying on Sync’s statement that core storage is end-to-end encrypted by default?
- Features: Do the optional features you plan to use involve processing that changes the privacy model for selected content?
- Recovery: Does the convenience of escrow-key recovery outweigh your preference for a strictly zero-knowledge configuration?
- Account security: Will you use a unique password, two-factor authentication, and session monitoring?
- Data location: Does your selected region and the treatment of account information meet your requirements?
- Assurance: Does the scope and period of the SOC documentation satisfy the level of evidence you need?
Sync’s stated core-storage design offers a meaningful privacy protection, but your feature choices, recovery setting, account security, and data-region needs also matter. For sensitive or regulated data, confirm the current account controls and contractual terms rather than relying on a general product description.
