For most buyers, waiting is the sensible choice. Squadron 42 is still in development and is not available to download, and the latest release window identified here is Q2 2027—not a confirmed launch date. The reviewed official information does not establish a final price or a currently available standalone preorder. Before paying, check the live store, your RSI account’s pledge contents, and whether your PC meets the published requirements.
What would you be buying today?
RSI’s support article, updated February 4, 2026, says Squadron 42 remains in development and is not available for download. RSI says people with a pledge that includes the game will be able to download it after development, testing, and release. In other words, a purchase now would not give you a game you can play immediately.

The release window stated in the latest reviewed announcement is Q2 2027. In a chairman letter dated August 27, 2026, Cloud Imperium Games chairman and CEO Chris Roberts wrote: “We have taken a look at the release windows at the start of 2027, and decided that Q2 provides a better time for Squadron 42 to release.” He also said a specific date would be announced shortly after the October 9–10 play sessions. The official material reviewed for this guide does not verify whether that later date announcement has happened, so check for a newer announcement before making a decision.
Buy now or wait?
| Choice | What it means | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Buy now, only if a live offer is available | You may be paying before the game is downloadable, without a confirmed specific release date or established final price. Check the live offer and its terms before completing checkout. | A buyer who has verified the exact offer, understands that access is for a future release, and is comfortable with the uncertainty. |
| Wait | You can reassess when there is a confirmed date, clear current pricing, and independent launch reviews. You also avoid paying now for a game you cannot yet play. | Most prospective buyers, especially anyone whose decision depends on reviews, a firm launch date, or a known price. |
This is a timing and purchase-risk recommendation, not a judgment of the game’s quality. The available information here does not include hands-on testing or an independent evaluation of the finished game.

Check your existing RSI account before buying
If you already have an RSI account, inspect My Hangar and the contents of each pledge before purchasing. Compare what your account includes with the exact package or add-on shown at checkout; otherwise, you may pay for access you already have.
RSI’s Pledges FAQ, updated April 14, 2026, says the Squadron 42 add-on cannot be applied retroactively to an existing game package. RSI also warns that not all reclaimed pledges can be bought back. Do not reclaim a pledge on the assumption that you can restore it or attach an add-on later.

Confirm the offer and checkout terms
Do not rely on old listings or prices to decide what a purchase costs now. A 2016 package-split announcement described a $45 base price as non-final and subject to change; it is historical context, not a current price. RSI’s checkout guidance describes a discounted add-on that may be offered at checkout for qualifying game packages, but the reviewed information does not establish a current standalone price or confirm that the offer is available to every account.
- Check the live RSI store and the price and contents displayed for your account before paying.
- Read the checkout terms to determine whether the offer is standalone or requires a qualifying package.
- Check the total for your billing region. RSI says applicable taxes may be added at checkout.
- Consider RSI’s pledge-reclaim terms before purchase: taxes are not returned as pledge value when a pledge is reclaimed.

A practical preorder checklist
- Look for a newer release announcement. Confirm whether CIG has issued a specific date since the August 27, 2026 letter.
- Open the live store. Confirm that a real offer is currently available to your account, what it includes, and the price shown before tax.
- Review My Hangar. Check your existing pledge contents so you do not buy duplicate access, and do not assume an add-on can be attached retroactively.
- Read the checkout and reclaim terms. Account for regional tax and understand the consequences before committing money.
- Compare your PC with the current requirements. Check the OS, graphics memory, CPU compatibility, RAM, and free SSD space; recheck the requirements closer to release.
- Decide whether you are comfortable waiting. If you want a confirmed date, final price, or launch reviews before paying, wait for those details.
