The available evidence does not establish that the official SpeedFan utility is malware. But that is not a blanket guarantee for every installer or a reason to dismiss a specific security alert. Check where the file came from, who signed it, and the exact detection name and file path shown by your security software.
What the official SpeedFan source says
SpeedFan is a Windows utility for monitoring hardware temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds, with fan-control features on supported hardware. Its developer’s site lists version 4.52 and describes it as free software. The listed Windows support reaches Windows 10; that page does not establish compatibility with Windows 11. SpeedFan’s official download page identifies the relevant driver as digitally signed with the developer’s certificate.

Developer Alfredo Milani Comparetti gives a direct provenance warning: “If you download an installer that has not SOKNO’s signature, then it is not SpeedFan!” The developer’s page can help you identify the intended source and publisher. A signature is not, by itself, proof that a file is risk-free or that a warning about it is mistaken.
What a Windows security warning means
Different alerts describe different concerns. Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) and software whose reputation is unknown. As Microsoft puts it, “Not all uncommon programs are malicious.” An unfamiliar-app or reputation warning is not, on its own, a malware verdict. A PUA classification means software may have behavior a user does not want; it is a separate category from malware. Microsoft’s criteria for malware and potentially unwanted applications explain the distinction.
#1 Best Overall
- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
Read the full detection name and the path to the detected file in Windows Security. A browser reputation warning, PUA classification, malware detection, and vulnerable-driver alert are not interchangeable. The detection’s wording and location help establish whether the alert concerns the installer, a component, or something else on the computer.
How to interpret a WinRing0 alert
Microsoft says the detection VulnerableDriver:WinNT/Winring0 is valid and identifies WinRing0 as a known vulnerable driver associated with CVE-2020-14979. That is not a generic warning to dismiss as a false positive. Microsoft’s WinRing0 alert guidance discusses the driver and names some other affected hardware-monitoring and gaming tools, but does not name SpeedFan in that list.

- High performance cooling fan, 120x120x25 mm, 12V, 4-pin PWM, max. 1700 RPM, max. 25.1 dB(A), >150,000 h MTTF
- Renowned NF-P12 high-end 120x25mm 12V fan, more than 100 awards and recommendations from international computer hardware websites and magazines, hundreds of thousands of satisfied users
- Pressure-optimised blade design with outstanding quietness of operation: high static pressure and strong CFM for air-based CPU coolers, water cooling radiators or low-noise chassis ventilation
- 1700rpm 4-pin PWM version with excellent balance of performance and quietness, supports automatic motherboard speed control (powerful airflow when required, virtually silent at idle)
- Streamlined redux edition: proven Noctua quality at an attractive price point, wide range of optional accessories (anti-vibration mounts, S-ATA adaptors, y-splitters, extension cables, etc.)
Therefore, a WinRing0 alert does not prove that every SpeedFan release contains that driver, nor does it establish that the entire SpeedFan application is malware. Use the alert’s exact file path and detection name to determine what Microsoft Defender flagged. Do not ignore the alert merely because the utility is legitimate software.

ESET documented a threat campaign that used SpeedFan’s driver in an exploit chain. This shows that a legitimate driver can be abused as part of a compromise; it does not show that the official SpeedFan installer was itself malicious or determine whether a particular installer downloaded today is safe. ESET’s report on the campaign describes that context.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
How to check a SpeedFan download or alert
- Verify the source. If you are considering installation, get the file from SpeedFan’s official download page. Avoid third-party repacks and download buttons that redirect elsewhere.
- Check the publisher signature. Inspect the installer’s digital signature and confirm it is signed by SOKNO, as the developer’s attribution guidance specifies. A signature helps establish provenance; it does not override a security alert.
- Read the detection details. In Windows Security, note the exact threat or warning name and the detected file path. Distinguish a reputation warning or PUA label from a malware or vulnerable-driver detection.
- Keep protection on and scan. Microsoft recommends trusted download sources and current security protection. Update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence and run a full scan if you ran the file or suspect exposure. For suspected compromise, Microsoft also documents an offline scan. See Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance and instructions for Microsoft Defender Offline.
- Do not bypass the warning to force installation. Avoid disabling protection or adding an antivirus exclusion just to make the utility run. Microsoft cautions that exclusions stop real-time checking of the excluded item; follow the alert’s recommended handling instead. Microsoft’s WinRing0 guidance explains the specific driver alert.
What can be concluded about a specific copy
The developer’s official site lists SpeedFan 4.52, but a general description of the utility cannot identify an individual file. A dependable judgment about a particular download requires its identity, source, signature, detection details, and current scan results. Without those details, neither “definitely malware” nor “definitely safe” is justified.
