Yes. Space Engineers supports multiplayer co-op and competitive play in both Creative and Survival. You can join a private session hosted by a friend, use an official Keen server, or rent a dedicated server for a persistent world. PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation players can play together on EOS-enabled servers; official Keen Steam servers remain PC-only.

What multiplayer includes
Space Engineers is built around shared engineering projects as well as combat. Steam lists the game as Single-player, Online PvP, Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. In practice, that means you can build a cooperative base, mine and explore together, or compete in the same Survival or Creative world.

Co-op is not a separate game mode that you purchase. It is a way of hosting or joining a world. The host chooses the world settings, including Creative or Survival, and other players connect to that instance. Competitive play uses the same multiplayer infrastructure; the difference is the rules and goals you agree on, such as factions, limited resources or PvP combat.
The PC version released on February 28, 2019. Keen Software House announced in 2023 that the game had passed five million copies sold worldwide. That historical sales figure is not a current player count or a guarantee that a particular server will be busy.

Every way to play with friends
| Multiplayer path | Best for | Crossplay | World persistence | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local or private host | A small group playing together occasionally | Usually the same platform; mixed platforms require EOS-compatible infrastructure | Host-dependent | Simple and inexpensive, but the world is unavailable when the host is offline |
| Official Keen Steam server | PC players who want immediate public multiplayer | PC Steam only | Server-based | Easy to join, but rules and population depend on the public server |
| Official Keen EOS server | PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation groups | Yes, on supported EOS servers | Server-based | Everyone must select the EOS network, and platform restrictions still apply |
| Rented dedicated server | A persistent private world, administration or a modded community | Choose an EOS-compatible provider for cross-platform play | Always on while the service runs | Monthly cost plus setup and administration |
Can PC, Xbox and PlayStation play together?
Yes, but only through the EOS side of the multiplayer system. Keen describes official Keen EOS Xbox servers as cross-platform, while official Keen PC Steam servers remain PC-only. A PC player on the Steam server list cannot simply invite a console player into that Steam-only server.
PlayStation, Xbox/Game Pass and PC players can team up on EOS servers. Keen’s PlayStation launch information says PlayStation, Xbox and PC players can play together from launch, provided they join an EOS-enabled server. EOS servers appear in the multiplayer browser; the browser lets PC players switch between Steam and EOS server lists.

- Open the multiplayer browser on each platform.
- Switch to the EOS server list rather than the Steam-only list.
- Have every player join the same EOS server or accept the host’s EOS invitation.
- If the server does not appear, confirm that it is actually an EOS server and that the console and PC versions are signed in to their platform accounts.
Crossplay does not remove every platform difference. Console-hosted worlds have scripting restrictions, and a server’s mods must be compatible with the clients joining it.
How to host a private co-op game
Use a local or friends-only session
A local session is the quickest choice for a small group that plays at the same time. The host creates or loads a world, enables multiplayer, and chooses whether access is limited to friends or opened more broadly. Friends then join through the game’s multiplayer browser or platform invitation system.

- Start Space Engineers and select a new world or load an existing save.
- Open the world or multiplayer settings and enable multiplayer.
- Set the visibility to friends-only or private, then configure Creative or Survival and any PvP, faction or environmental rules.
- Save and start the world.
- Invite friends through the platform overlay or have them find the session in the appropriate multiplayer list.
The host’s machine and connection run the session. When the host exits, loses connectivity or shuts down the game, the world normally stops being available. This model is therefore suitable for scheduled play, not for a base that friends expect to visit at any time.
Understand console local-player limits
Microsoft’s listing gives model-specific figures for Xbox local lobbies: Xbox One and Xbox One S support two players total (the host plus one client), while Xbox One X supports four players total (the host plus three clients). These are local-lobby figures for those console models, not a universal limit for every Space Engineers server. Dedicated-server capacity and public-server rules are configured separately.

When a dedicated server is the better choice
Keen defines dedicated servers as game instances intended for long-time multiplayer games. The server runs independently of any player’s game session, so the world can remain available when the original host is offline. That makes a dedicated server useful when several people play at different times, when you want scheduled backups and administration, or when a shared build is meant to run continuously.
- Choose local hosting if the group is small, plays together and wants the simplest no-monthly-cost option.
- Choose an official public server if you want to start playing immediately and accept someone else’s rules, population and uptime.
- Choose a rented dedicated server if persistence, private administration, a custom world or regular access matters more than avoiding a monthly fee.
A dedicated server is not required for ordinary co-op. It becomes worthwhile when host-dependent availability is the problem you are trying to solve.

How to set up a dedicated server
Pick a provider and network
For PC dedicated hosting, Keen’s documentation names GTX Gaming as its official PC host. For Xbox, Keen names Nitrado; Keen’s PlayStation Plus announcement also says players can launch private servers through Nitrado. Provider availability, location and pricing can change, so check the current offer for your platform and region before ordering.
If the group includes PC, Xbox or PlayStation players, select an EOS-compatible server. A Steam-only dedicated server will not provide console crossplay.
Configure the world
- Create the server instance and select the EOS or Steam network required by your group.
- Upload or create the world save, then choose Creative or Survival and set the desired PvP, faction, respawn and resource rules.
- Set an administrator list, password and join permissions before making the address public.
- Add only mods that match the server network and the players’ platforms.
- Start the server and test a connection from each platform before inviting the whole group.
Choose a server region geographically close to most players. Keen’s official server overview lists regional locations and advises selecting a nearby region; shorter network distances generally make latency easier to manage.
Mods, programmable blocks and scripting
Mods are not automatically interchangeable across every multiplayer path. Keen says Xbox worlds may contain mods without scripts, while dedicated servers can run mods with scripts when those mods do not require client-side scripts. A mod that depends on a programmable block running on every client can therefore fail or be unavailable on a console-hosted session.

The clearest limitation concerns in-game scripting through the Programmable Block. Keen’s PlayStation FAQ states that scripting is unavailable in single-player and locally hosted multiplayer because of console-platform limitations. Scripting is available when connected to a dedicated server.
- For an unmodified or lightly modded console co-op session, local hosting can be sufficient.
- For programmable-block automation, plan on a dedicated server.
- For crossplay, verify that every selected mod supports EOS and the joining platforms; do not assume that a PC mod will work on Xbox or PlayStation.
Player counts, performance and server rules
There is no single player cap that applies to every Space Engineers multiplayer experience. The Xbox One figures above describe specific local-lobby models. A rented server can expose different capacity settings, and an official public server may impose its own population, simulation or rule limits.
Actual playability also depends on the host or server hardware, world complexity, scripts, mods and network conditions. Large constructions and heavily simulated worlds can be more demanding than a new Survival map. Treat a provider’s advertised slot count as a configuration value, not a promise that every world will maintain the same performance at that population.
Public servers add another variable: rules and moderation. Read the server description before building a permanent base, because PvP, raiding, wipes, mod lists and restart schedules are controlled by the operator rather than by your private group.

Troubleshooting common multiplayer problems
A console player cannot see the PC host
Check that both players are using an EOS server or EOS-hosted session. A Steam-only PC server will not appear as a cross-platform destination. Have both players refresh the correct server list and confirm that the host’s world is actually running.
The world disappears when the host leaves
That is expected for a host-dependent local session. Move the save to a dedicated server if the group needs an always-available world.
A script or programmable block does nothing
Check whether the session is locally hosted on a console. Keen’s stated limitation blocks in-game scripting in that arrangement. Use a dedicated server for scripting support, and confirm that the mod does not require client-side scripts.
Friends cannot join a modded EOS server
Compare the server’s mod list with each player’s installed content and verify platform compatibility. Remove or replace mods that depend on unsupported client-side behavior, then restart the server and have clients reconnect.
Players experience lag or simulation slowdowns
Move the server to a region closer to the group, reduce unnecessary mods and scripts, and test with fewer players or a less complex world. If a public server remains unstable, its operator—not your local console settings—may be the limiting factor.

| Your situation | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three friends on one platform, playing at the same time | Private local session | Fastest setup and no hosting subscription |
| PC and consoles in the same group | EOS official or EOS-compatible dedicated server | EOS is the cross-platform route; Steam-only servers exclude consoles |
| Friends play at different hours | Dedicated server | The world remains online without the original host |
| Programmable-block automation is essential | Dedicated server | Console-local scripting is restricted |
| You want public activity without administration | Official Keen server | No private setup, but you accept its rules and population |
| You want a private modded community | Rented dedicated server | Admins control access, saves and compatible mods |
Bottom line for co-op and crossplay
Space Engineers is fully multiplayer: Creative and Survival both support cooperative and competitive play. Start with a private host when everyone plays together, use an official server for immediate public access, and move to a dedicated server when persistence, administration or scripting matters. For a mixed PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation group, select an EOS-enabled server; an official Keen Steam server is PC-only.
