Sons of the Forest does not support crossplay. The game is available on PC through Steam; no PlayStation 5 or Xbox edition is listed in the current platform information covered here. That means PC players can play with other PC players, but not with console users. Cross-progression is also unavailable.
What “crossplay” means for Sons of the Forest
Crossplay allows people on different hardware platforms to join the same multiplayer session. For example, a crossplay game might let a player on a Windows PC enter a lobby hosted by someone on a PlayStation 5. A game can support crossplay only when compatible versions exist on those platforms and the developer has connected their online services.

In Sons of the Forest, the currently verified release is the PC version distributed through Steam. With no listed PS5 or Xbox version to connect to, there is no PC-to-console multiplayer path. “Cross-platform” is therefore not a hidden setting that can be enabled in Steam; it describes a service the game would need to provide.
Crossplay is also different from cross-progression. Crossplay concerns joining a session with someone on another platform. Cross-progression lets you carry a character, world, inventory, or other progress between platforms. The available platform summaries report no cross-progression for this game.

|---|---|---|
| Windows PC (Steam) | Verified listing; full release on February 22, 2024 | Yes, with other compatible PC copies |

The player-count figure most often repeated in 2026 aggregator summaries is up to eight people in a multiplayer session. Those summaries are not a substitute for a current developer specification, so treat the number as a practical listing rather than a guarantee for every update, mode, or server configuration.
Release timeline and why the dates matter
Early access
The Steam listing records the early-access launch on February 23, 2023. Early access means the game was playable while development continued; features, stability, and platform plans could still change during that period.
Full PC release
The same Steam listing records the full PC release on February 22, 2024. This is the release date for the Steam edition, not a console launch date. A full PC release does not imply that PlayStation or Xbox editions were released alongside it.

The Forest is a different game
Some search results combine this title with The Forest, its predecessor from Endnight Games. The Forest has a PS4 release, but that does not make Sons of the Forest available on PS4, PS5, or Xbox. Their platform support and multiplayer capabilities must be checked separately.
How PC multiplayer works
Because the supported route is Steam on PC, every participant needs access to the PC edition and an online Steam account. The following process uses the standard Steam and in-game flow; menu wording can change with updates.
- Install the game through Steam. Each player should own and install the same PC edition. Allow Steam to finish downloads and updates before starting a session.
- Confirm that Steam is online. A player running Steam in offline mode may not appear correctly in an online invitation or lobby.
- Add your friends in Steam. Use the Steam Friends interface to send or accept friend requests before opening the game. This avoids trying to exchange invitations while one person is still at the title screen.
- Launch the game and choose its multiplayer option. One person creates or hosts a session; the others use the join or invite option shown in their current game version.
- Send the invitation through the available Steam or in-game prompt. Depending on the update, an invitation may be handled through the Steam overlay, a friends list, or an in-game lobby browser.
- Load the intended world and verify the roster. The host should check that the expected friends have joined before beginning activities that depend on everyone being present.
For a smoother session, agree on who will host, use a stable wired or strong wireless connection where possible, and make sure everyone is running the same current build. These steps do not add crossplay; they simply help Steam players connect to one another.

For a hosted option, PC groups can use Godlike.Host for a Sons of the Forest server rather than relying on one player’s session. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).
Can a PC player join a friend on PS5 or Xbox?
No. The current platform information does not list a PS5 or Xbox edition of Sons of the Forest. Without a console version, there is no console client that can enter a PC lobby, and a console owner cannot buy a supported edition for a cross-platform session.
Buying the PC version for one person and expecting that copy to work on a console will not solve the problem. PC and console purchases are separate platform licenses, and the required console release is not listed for this title.

What the cross-progression status means
Cross-progression would let you continue the same save or account data on another platform. The available summaries report that it is unavailable. In practical terms, a Steam save remains part of the PC experience; there is no supported PlayStation or Xbox destination to which it can be transferred.
If you change PCs, protect your local saves with the backup method appropriate to your operating system and Steam setup. A backup can help with a hardware failure, but it is not cross-progression and does not make a save usable on an unsupported console version.
What is known about possible console releases?
No official developer or Steam statement confirming console plans is established in the information available for this article. One 2026 aggregator summary mentions a possible late-2026 console arrival, but that report is not confirmed by a primary source, and it does not establish crossplay. It should not be treated as a release announcement or a promise that PC and console players will share servers.

Console support and crossplay can change independently. A future console edition could launch without crossplay, while a later update could add it. Before purchasing a console version or planning a mixed-platform event, check a current Steam listing and an announcement from Endnight Games or the relevant console store.
PC multiplayer troubleshooting
A friend cannot see the invitation
- Check that both Steam accounts show as online and that the friend request was accepted.
- Close and relaunch Steam and the game, then send a new invitation after both players reach the main menu.
- Confirm that neither player is running a different game branch or an unfinished update.
The lobby appears, but joining fails
- Have the host restart the session and invite players again.
- Temporarily remove unofficial modifications and test an unmodified game. Mods can cause version or connection mismatches when players do not have identical files.
- Check firewall or security software rules if the game is blocked from making network connections. Apply only the permissions needed for the game and Steam.
Players disconnect during a session
- Test the host’s connection for packet loss or short interruptions, not just download speed.
- Reduce other heavy uploads or downloads on the host’s network.
- Restart the router and Steam if the problem begins after a network change, then create a fresh session.
A save or world is missing
- Confirm that the host is using the same Steam account and PC installation that created the world.
- Do not overwrite a working save while troubleshooting; make a backup first.
- If an update or modification caused the issue, test the game without the modification before changing or deleting save files.
These are general PC multiplayer checks rather than guarantees of a particular fix. If an update changes the menu or networking behavior, use the current in-game instructions and official support channels for that version.
Should you buy it for a mixed-platform group?
| Your group | Expected result | Best plan |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone owns a Windows PC and can use Steam | Supported multiplayer route | Install the same current PC edition and coordinate one host |
| Some players use PC and others use PS5 | No shared session with the currently listed versions | Choose a game that is released on both platforms with confirmed crossplay |
| Some players use PC and others use Xbox | No shared session with the currently listed versions | Do not purchase expecting cross-platform access |
| You want to move progress from PC to console | Cross-progression unavailable | Plan to keep progress on the PC Steam edition |
| You are waiting for a rumored console release | Timing and crossplay are unconfirmed | Wait for a dated announcement from a primary source |
Bottom line for multiplayer planning
Sons of the Forest is a Steam PC multiplayer game, not a crossplay title. PC players can organize sessions with other PC players, with aggregator listings commonly describing groups of up to eight, but there is no listed PS5 or Xbox version to connect to and no cross-progression between platforms. Keep that limitation in mind before buying copies for a mixed-platform friend group, and treat future-console rumors as unconfirmed until Endnight Games or an official store publishes a release and crossplay policy.
